e87f673faa fix(codex): send catalog/image credentials only to their own route
Follow-up to the two contributor commits for #121486. The picker, the
image plugin and the auxiliary Codex client still composed a pooled
gateway key with a base re-read from ambient state (HERMES_CODEX_BASE_URL
or the chatgpt.com default), so a model.base_url-only gateway (env unset)
still sent its key to chatgpt.com.

- auth_codex: resolve_codex_runtime_credentials reports the host a pooled
  credential actually routes to (runtime_provider._pool_entry_mode_and_url:
env > model.base_url while the row is canonical > row URL) instead of the
ambient default; get_codex_auth_status carries the same bound base_url.
- picker: get_codex_model_ids(access_token, base_url=) now receives the base
resolved with the token from hermes_cli/models.py, the CLI default-model
swap (self.base_url) and the `hermes model` Codex flow.
- aux/image: _resolve_codex_credential_and_base() returns (token, base) from
one pool selection; the image plugin, _build_codex_client and the raw
Codex client use it (profile-scoped override from #121497 still wins).
- model_metadata: the non-JWT refusal now applies only when the target is
chatgpt.com; a gateway key may probe its own gateway's /models.

Adversarial regressions: model.base_url with env unset, env/route mismatch,
opaque + JWT gateway keys, pool-selected credential, pool row with its own
gateway URL, direct-ChatGPT positive control.

Addresses @andrexibiza's review on #121508.

602aa9a55b fix(agent): keep custom-Codex-base credentials off chatgpt.com
Behind a custom Codex base URL (HERMES_CODEX_BASE_URL / model.base_url
gateway) three paths still hit the hard-coded chatgpt.com host with the
gateway's credential-pool key (#121486):

- the OAuth context-length probe (agent/model_metadata.py) and the
  /model picker's live discovery (hermes_cli/codex_models.py) both GET
  https://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex/models with
  Authorization: Bearer <gateway key> whenever model.context_length is
not pinned — the key is sent to a service it does not belong to and
  cannot answer for;
- the openai-codex image_gen plugin posts to the same hard-coded base.

Fix, mirroring the quota probe's existing gate in auth_codex:

- both catalog sites now decline to probe non-JWT credentials (real
Codex access tokens are JWTs; a gateway key is not one) and fall
back to the static table / offline sources — same outcome as the
  doomed request today, minus the credential leak;
- a JWT reached through a custom base now probes that base's own
/models instead of chatgpt.com (catalog URLs are built from the
  resolved base; the per-token cache key includes the base);
- the image plugin resolves its base from HERMES_CODEX_BASE_URL the
same way the text client does.

Fast-mode host gating in the /fast picker is intentionally left
untouched: lifting it needs an explicit opt-in design decision, not a
bug fix.

38c289c014 fix(models): drop gpt-6-terra, a tier OpenAI never published
#119410 registered gpt-6-terra alongside sol and luna from the request text, and the Codex
forward-compat synthesis put it (and -900k) in the live /model picker on every surface.
Nothing serves it: not the Codex account catalog (astra, sol, luna), not OpenRouter (same
three, plus -pro), and OpenAI's model page 404s. Forward-compat is for published tiers the
account catalog has not listed yet, not for guessed names. Removed from the Codex fallback
list and template chain, the context/900k tables, the effort ladder prefixes, the aux-client
family list, and the Nous/OpenRouter static catalogs; catalog JSON regenerated. A contract
test pins the synthesized GPT-6 set to the published tiers.

1d10cef836 fix(codex): ask the models catalog as the newest client so GPT-6 Sol/Luna show up (#119412)
The ChatGPT Codex models endpoint gates entries on client_version against each
model's minimal_client_version. Hermes sent the "0.0.0" sentinel, which used to
return the whole account catalog; since the GPT-6 Sol/Luna rollout it returns a
frozen legacy list (astra + the 5.6 trio) while any version at or above the newest
minimal_client_version (0.155.0, 1.0.0, 99.0.0 alike, live 2026-09-22) returns
everything the account is entitled to. So the picker and the context-window probe
hid gpt-6-sol / gpt-6-luna that the vendor's own client showed for the same account.

Both request sites now go through fetch_codex_catalog_entries(): try the
newest-client URL first and fall back to the "0.0.0" sentinel only when that
answer is non-200 or empty (the backend used to reject out-of-sequence versions
that way). No local ~/.codex/models_cache.json is consulted: a missing or stale cache (this
host records 0.147.0, which hides gpt-6-sol at 0.155.0) must not decide what the
account can see.

Report by @Stone441 (#119412); supersedes #119420 by @KoNit-K, whose fix read the
compatibility version from the local `~/.codex` cache.

79ec1f2a34 feat(models): GPT-6 Sol/Terra/Luna replace the 5.6 tiers in Nous/OpenRouter catalogs, with Codex -900k variants
OpenAI shipped gpt-6-sol / gpt-6-terra / gpt-6-luna as the successors of the
gpt-5.6 tier line (Sol and Luna live on OpenRouter + the Nous Portal today).
The curated aggregator catalogs (OPENROUTER_MODELS and the derived nous list,
plus the published website model-catalog.json) now carry the gpt-6 tiers and
their -pro variants instead of the 5.6 ones; the openai-api curated fallback
lists them ahead of 5.6.

Codex OAuth support mirrors the 5.6 + Astra contract for every gpt-6 tier:
curated fallback + forward-compat synthesis (from the 5.6 twin or 5.5),
272K advertised fallback, the opt-in -900k picker variants with the
live-verified 900K bump (still capped by the catalog's max_context_window),
dated-snapshot eligibility, wire-suffix stripping, the compaction auto-raise
on the base slug, and the gpt-5.6 effort ladder (max allowed, minimal
rejected). Pricing rows for gpt-6-sol / gpt-6-luna come from OpenAI's model
pages (272K whole-request tier like Astra); Terra has no published page yet
so it deliberately has none.

/model gpt keeps resolving to the flagship: "astra" joins the rank-0 suffix
set so gpt-6-astra sorts above gpt-6-sol.

95f20517c2 fix(codex): key the catalog cache on token state too, and drop the inner digest
An expired stored token makes _codex_catalog serve the static fallback (no Astra). Under
the principal-only key that fallback outlived the token refresh for the whole cache TTL —
before this stack the auth.json rewrite busted it. The identity now has an "expired" state
so the refresh to a live token for the same principal is a cache miss, as it was.

The helper also hashed the principal itself; _credential_fingerprint blake2b-hashes the
joined parts one frame up (they already carry raw API-key env values), so the second digest
bought nothing. It returns the principal (or the opaque token) directly, and the empty-token
case is one early return.

82796e06d7 fix(codex): remove dead gpt-5.3-codex from curated fallback list
The chatgpt.com Codex backend now returns HTTP 400 for gpt-5.3-codex
on ChatGPT Pro accounts, matching the same pattern that previously
killed gpt-5.2-codex, gpt-5.1-codex-max, and gpt-5.1-codex-mini.

- Remove gpt-5.3-codex from DEFAULT_CODEX_MODELS
- Update _FORWARD_COMPAT_TEMPLATE_MODELS to re-anchor gpt-5.3-codex-spark
on gpt-5.4/gpt-5.5 templates instead of the dead gpt-5.3-codex
- Update forward-compat test to use gpt-5.5 as trigger model

7471586ad0 fix: send the Codex residency header on every JWT-derived Codex request
The Codex models catalog probe (agent/model_metadata.py), the picker catalog
fetch (hermes_cli/codex_models.py), the quota-restored probe
(hermes_cli/auth_codex.py) and the /usage dashboard call
(agent/account_usage.py) each re-decoded the OAuth JWT for
ChatGPT-Account-ID and would 401 on residency-enforced workspaces exactly
like the chat client did (#23896). They now share
agent.codex_headers.codex_account_headers, which emits the account and
x-openai-internal-codex-residency headers from one decode; the three
duplicate `_extract_chatgpt_account_id` decoders are gone.

account_usage keeps auth.json's account_id as the winner over the JWT claim
(pool-only credentials still omit it); header casing unifies on the
codex-rs canonical `ChatGPT-Account-ID` (HTTP header names are
case-insensitive on the wire; the two tests asserting the old casing follow).

2aad4035a5 Port pattern from zed-industries/zed#62729: request ungated Codex model catalog (clean-room)
The ChatGPT Codex models endpoint interprets client_version as a Codex
CLI compatibility version and filters out any model whose
minimal_client_version is newer than the value sent. Hermes hardcoded
client_version=1.0.0 at both catalog request sites, so model visibility
was accidentally coupled to a version scheme Hermes doesn't follow —
future models gated behind a higher minimal version would silently
vanish from the account catalog.

The backend accepts the exact sentinel 0.0.0 as an ungated request
returning the complete account catalog (verified live: 0.0.0 and
current versions return identical model sets today, while omitting the
parameter is HTTP 400 and out-of-sequence values like 0.0.1 return no
models). Both request sites (hermes_cli/codex_models.py and the
context-length probe in agent/model_metadata.py) now share one
CODEX_UNGATED_CLIENT_VERSION constant.

Clean-room port of the observed behavior in zed-industries/zed#62729;
no GPL code translated.

b6852995ed refactor(openai): one is_astra_model predicate; gate Astra at the untrusted Codex inputs
The slug pair {"gpt-6-astra", "gpt-6-astra-900k"} was spelled out five times
(reasoning_effort, transports/codex, models.py x2, codex_models) with five hand-rolled
``.strip().lower().rsplit("/", 1)[-1]`` normalisations. ``is_astra_model`` in
agent/reasoning_effort.py (the module the other four already import) is now the only home, so a
new Astra alias is one edit.

``_finalize_codex_models(..., allow_astra=)`` was a control-coupling flag set True by the two
live callers and left False by the two static ones. The filter now lives where the untrusted
inputs are — ``_drop_undiscovered_astra`` over config.toml default + models_cache.json in
``get_codex_model_ids`` — and ``_finalize_codex_models`` is back to its one-line original.
DEFAULT_CODEX_MODELS never contains Astra, so the static catalog needs no gate.

``_openai_catalog`` appends whatever Astra ids live discovery returned instead of a name-keyed
``if "gpt-6-astra" in live_lower`` branch with a literal fallback that could never fire.

e83816a4d1 review-fix(comments): restore lost #NNNN rationale comments across non-test source (mechanical sweep, condensed, code unchanged)
For each issue anchor present in BASE 63279301bc non-test .py and absent on HEAD, the BASE comment/docstring block was re-attached at the HEAD location of the code it explained (matched by the distinctive code line / enclosing def). Sentences already covered by an existing HEAD comment were deduped; the issue number always survives. Insert-only: no code lines changed.

6e294f543d fix: read source files with encoding=utf-8-sig
Read text files with the encoding utf-8-sig so a BOM at the start of a
file does not cause a Unicode decode error (Windows editors add BOMs).

Reconstructed from ethie/pm commits 48a32b135b + 013219e814 onto the
current upstream/main base: only the utf-8 -> utf-8-sig transforms were
carried (370 exact line pairs across 205 files); pm-rename hunks that
rode in the original commit were left to the pm-store commit, and
utf8sig hunks entangled with content changes ride their owning commit.

Rebuilt on ethie/pm-clean off ac6c8028e0 (upstream/main).

63a9c26fbe feat(model): Codex GPT slugs default back to 272K; explicit -900k picker variants opt into the verified large window
The Aug 16 change that auto-raised gpt-5.4/5.6 Codex OAuth context to the
live-verified 900K burned through subscription usage for users who never
asked for the larger window (bigger window = more input tokens per request).

- Base Codex slugs (gpt-5.6-sol/terra/luna, gpt-5.4) now resolve to the
advertised 272K again — the cheaper limit is the default.
- The model picker synthesizes explicit <slug>-900k variants (e.g.
gpt-5.6-sol-900k) for every live-verified slug; selecting one opts into
the 900K window. Slugs that genuinely enforce 272K (gpt-5.5,
  gpt-5.4-mini) get no variant.
- The -900k suffix is Hermes-side only: stripped before the model id hits
the wire (main transport + auxiliary Responses adapter), and pricing
aliases the variants onto the base entries.
- Docs: new opt-in section in context-compression-and-caching.md.

c44c2fbb0b fix(codex): send ChatGPT-Account-Id on /models probes
The Codex backend returns the per-account model catalog only when the
ChatGPT-Account-Id header is present. Without it, GET /backend-api/codex/models
responds 200 OK with {"models":[]} and the picker silently degrades to the
hardcoded fallback list — which is stale or wrong for the active plan
(no GPT-5.6 family, wrong context windows).

This was the upstream bug behind slow first responses and HTTP 520/120s SSE
hangs: Hermes was sending invalid slugs because the probe never saw them in
the catalog, and Codex's request builder also depends on the same JWT claim
that's now being threaded through both probe paths.

Fixes the probe-side paths in hermes_cli/codex_models.py and
agent/model_metadata.py by extracting chatgpt_account_id from the OAuth JWT
(mirroring the request-side logic already in auxiliary_client.py) and sending
it as a header.

Verified live:
- _fetch_models_from_api now returns the 10-model catalog (gpt-5.6-sol,
  gpt-5.6-terra, gpt-5.6-luna, gpt-5.5, gpt-5.4, gpt-5.4-mini,
  gpt-5.3-codex-spark, 3x -pro variants) instead of [].
- _fetch_codex_oauth_context_lengths resolves all 8 account models to 272K
context (matches direct API probes of the same account).
- end-to-end: hermes chat -m gpt-5.6-sol -q 'Reply with one word: pong'
returns 'pong' cleanly via the openai-codex route.

Same class of bug as PR #64760.

4af484d3dd feat(openai): complete gpt-5.6 E2E — codex catalog + 272K compaction auto-raise
Close the remaining end-to-end gaps so the full gpt-5.6 family (sol/
terra/luna + their -pro high-effort modes, 6 slugs) works on every
surface a user can reach them through:

- agent/auxiliary_client.py: the Codex OAuth backend hard-caps context
at 272K for gpt-5.6 exactly as it does for 5.4/5.5, but the default
50% compaction trigger would summarize at ~136K and waste half the
usable window. Extend the existing _is_codex_gpt54_or_gpt55 chokepoint
  (single enforced predicate feeding _compression_threshold_for_model)
to match gpt-5.6* on the openai-codex route so those sessions get the
  same 0.85 auto-raise. Direct-API/OpenRouter routes (full 1.05M window)
are unaffected; the historical codex_gpt55_autoraise opt-out still
applies. The one-time notice banner is model-dynamic and already
  renders the correct slug/cap.
- hermes_cli/config.py, agent/agent_init.py: refresh the autoraise
comments/notice to mention the 5.6 family.
- hermes_cli/codex_models.py: add the -pro variants to DEFAULT_CODEX_MODELS
+ forward-compat so ChatGPT-OAuth (openai-codex) Pro users see the full
family in /model, not just the base tiers.

Supersedes the earlier commit's note that 5.6 was intentionally kept out
of the codex catalog: the slugs are confirmed routable (OpenRouter live
+ codex backend), so they belong there like every other codex-capable
gpt-5.x slug.

E2E verified across all 6 slugs: direct-API ctx 1.05M, codex ctx 272K,
pricing reachable from openai + openai-api routes, codex compaction
override 0.85 (and None on direct-API + when opted out), present in
openai-api picker + codex catalog, /model gpt resolves to sol on both
native routes. Guard tests added for the compaction route matrix.

bd767b574b feat(openai): complete gpt-5.6 registration — context, codex catalog, native picker, pricing
PR #61578 added the GPT-5.6 series (sol/terra/luna) to the two aggregator
surfaces (OPENROUTER_MODELS, _PROVIDER_MODELS[nous]). This completes the
registration on the remaining surfaces per the standard add-model checklist:

- agent/model_metadata.py: DEFAULT_CONTEXT_LENGTHS 1.05M (direct API, same
  as gpt-5.5; more-specific keys precede gpt-5.5 for longest-substring
matching) + _CODEX_OAUTH_CONTEXT_FALLBACK 272K for all three slugs.
Without these the direct-API fallback matched generic "gpt-5" = 400K.
- hermes_cli/codex_models.py: DEFAULT_CODEX_MODELS + forward-compat
templates so ChatGPT-OAuth (openai-codex) pickers surface the series.
- hermes_cli/models.py: _PROVIDER_MODELS[openai-api] (native API picker).
- agent/usage_pricing.py: _OFFICIAL_DOCS_PRICING snapshot — sol 5/30,
  terra 2.50/15, luna 1/6 per 1M in/out; cache read 0.10x input, cache
write 1.25x input (OpenAI billing change starting with the 5.6 series).
GA 2026-07-09 at preview rates. Sol Fast mode (Cerebras tier) excluded.
- hermes_cli/model_switch.py: rank "sol" as a flagship suffix so
/model gpt resolves to gpt-5.6-sol, not alphabetical-first luna.

Verified: registry E2E via real imports (both context tables, codex
forward-compat from a gpt-5.5 template, billing-route lookup for
openai/gpt-5.6-sol -> 5.00/M), alias resolution on openai-codex and
openai-api resolves to gpt-5.6-sol; 183 targeted tests pass
(model_metadata, usage_pricing, codex_models, model_catalog).

e8955f222c fix(codex): drop dead model slugs that HTTP 400 on ChatGPT Pro (#33424)
DEFAULT_CODEX_MODELS shipped three slugs that the chatgpt.com Codex
backend rejects with HTTP 400 'The <slug> model is not supported when
using Codex with a ChatGPT account.' on every account tested live:

  gpt-5.2-codex
  gpt-5.1-codex-max
  gpt-5.1-codex-mini

Live verified against https://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex/models
which returns gpt-5.5, gpt-5.4, gpt-5.4-mini, gpt-5.3-codex,
gpt-5.3-codex-spark, gpt-5.2 for ChatGPT Pro accounts.

When _fetch_models_from_api fell back to DEFAULT_CODEX_MODELS (offline
first-run, transient API failure) the picker surfaced these dead slugs
and crashed on selection. The forward-compat synthesis table chained
them downstream too.

If OpenAI re-enables them on the OAuth-backed Codex backend, live
discovery will pick them up automatically — the defaults list is only
consulted when live discovery is unavailable.

Test fixture pivoted to use gpt-5.3-codex (templated by 4 entries) as
the synthesis driver so the forward-compat test still exercises the
synthesis path.

9ee9a4297d docs(codex-spark): document ChatGPT Pro entitlement gating
PR #12994 stripped gpt-5.3-codex-spark on the assumption that it was
unsupported. It's actually research-preview, ChatGPT-Pro-only, exposed
via the Codex OAuth backend at chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex/models —
not via the public OpenAI API.

Add explanatory comments in:
  - DEFAULT_CODEX_MODELS / _FORWARD_COMPAT_TEMPLATE_MODELS (codex_models.py)
  - _CODEX_OAUTH_CONTEXT_FALLBACK (model_metadata.py)
  - list_authenticated_providers' live-discovery branch (model_switch.py)

so future maintainers don't strip the entry again. Also documents the
intentional asymmetry that Spark stays out of the "openai" provider
catalog (it isn't on the public API) and why the supported_in_api
filter is *not* applied for the openai-codex route.

8f5fee3e3e feat(codex): add gpt-5.5 and wire live model discovery into picker (#14720)
OpenAI launched GPT-5.5 on Codex today (Apr 23 2026). Adds it to the static
catalog and pipes the user's OAuth access token into the openai-codex path of
provider_model_ids() so /model mid-session and the gateway picker hit the
live ChatGPT codex/models endpoint — new models appear for each user
according to what ChatGPT actually lists for their account, without a Hermes
release.

Verified live: 'gpt-5.5' returns priority 0 (featured) from the endpoint,
400k context per OpenAI's launch article. 'hermes chat --provider
openai-codex --model gpt-5.5' completes end-to-end.

Changes:
- hermes_cli/codex_models.py: add gpt-5.5 to DEFAULT_CODEX_MODELS + forward-compat
- agent/model_metadata.py: 400k context length entry
- hermes_cli/models.py: resolve codex OAuth token before calling
  get_codex_model_ids() in provider_model_ids('openai-codex')

f996d7950b fix: trust user-selected models with OpenAI Codex provider
The Codex model normalization was rejecting any model without 'codex'
in its name, forcing a fallback to gpt-5.3-codex. This blocked models
like gpt-5.4 that the Codex API actually supports.

The fix simplifies _normalize_model_for_provider() to two operations:
1. Strip provider prefixes (API needs bare slugs)
2. Replace the *untouched default* model with a Codex-compatible one

If the user explicitly chose a model — any model — we trust them and
let the API be the judge. No allowlists, no slug checks.

Also removes the 'codex not in slug' filter from _read_cache_models()
so the local cache preserves all API-available models.

Inspired by OpenClaw's approach which explicitly lists non-codex models
(gpt-5.4, gpt-5.2) as valid Codex models.
