A long-lived serve process keeps a deleted profile as the context home of threads
that outlive the delete. A bare `mkdir(parents=True)` right before an atomic write
brings `profiles/<name>/` back after `hermes profile delete` has written the
tombstone and removed the tree.
The writers in `utils` and the seven callers named in #112592 are guarded by the
preceding commits; this one applies the same `mkdir_under_hermes_home` idiom to the
other pre-write directory creations found by the same mechanical rule (auth,
personality, plugin catalog, skills sync, tool discovery cache, platform adapters,
memory plugins, local runtime supervisor, process identity, breadcrumbs). The two
sites that pass `mode=` keep their mkdir behind `assert_named_profile_home_live`.
The guard is a no-op unless the target has a provable `profiles/<name>` ancestor.
Salvaged from #112596 (30-file sweep) on top of #112594 / #112601; the overlapping
files were resolved to the already-landed versions.
Port from earendil-works/pi#8337 (UTF-8 BOM normalization in text inputs):
sibling sites the merged #81967 BOM sweep missed. json.loads hard-fails on
a leading U+FEFF and every one of these loaders swallows the exception and
silently falls back to defaults — a user who edited mem0.json, honcho.json,
hindsight/config.json, or supermemory.json in Notepad lost their whole
config with no error, and Qwen CLI OAuth creds saved with a BOM raised
qwen_auth_read_failed.
- plugins/memory/{honcho,mem0,hindsight,supermemory}: 13 read sites -> utf-8-sig
- hermes_cli/auth.py: _read_qwen_cli_tokens -> utf-8-sig
- tests: BOM regression tests per loader (sabotage-proven) + plain-UTF-8 guard
Six of eight memory providers spawned plain threading.Thread for prefetch/sync/
writer work. A plain thread starts with an EMPTY contextvars.Context, so under
multiplex profiles the worker resolved the DEFAULT profile's HERMES_HOME (and
fails closed on scoped secrets). honcho and hindsight had each noticed and
written their own copy_context() wrapper; core had a third in memory_manager.
One canonical pair now lives on the ABC module every provider already imports:
agent/memory_provider.py::ctx_bound / spawn_context_thread. memory_manager,
honcho, hindsight, mem0, retaindb, byterover, supermemory and openviking all use
it; the honcho and hindsight wrappers and memory_manager._ctx_bound are deleted.
Five "json.loads(path.read_text()) or {}" readers (mem0._read_mem0_json,
honcho client/oauth/cli _read_config, hindsight save_config/_load_config) fold
into utils.read_json_or_empty, the read half of every read-merge-atomic_json_write
sidecar store.
holographic.save_config was the only config.yaml writer in the tree that
bypassed hermes_cli.config.save_config: raw open("w") + yaml.dump with no config
lock, no managed-mode refusal, no atomic replace, and a swallowed exception. It
now calls save_config(..., merge_existing=True). Behavior change: a managed
install refuses the write (previously silently rewrote config.yaml); other
sections are deep-merged instead of round-tripped through a raw dump.
openviking._hermes_home_path guarded an impossible ImportError of
hermes_constants (the module already imports agent.*) with a ~/.hermes fallback
that is wrong on Windows and under profile overrides; it is replaced by
get_hermes_home() directly.
Tests: tests/plugins/memory/test_provider_threads_inherit_profile.py drives each
provider's real spawn path with a fake backend and asserts the thread sees the
spawner's HERMES_HOME override (sabotage: retaindb back on threading.Thread ->
red). tests/plugins/memory/test_holographic_save_config.py pins merge-with-
existing-sections and managed-mode refusal (sabotage: raw yaml.dump -> red).
Ramp Router efforts cache + warm/disk flags, xAI and OpenRouter image catalogs,
Hindsight append-capability verdict, memory-provider skill registry, OpenViking
atexit provider, Honcho loopback flow status, Langfuse client (os.environ-only
credentials) and disk-cleanup's protected cron paths held one profile's
credential- or home-derived value process-wide; YuanbaoAdapter._active_instance
was last-connected-wins across profiles.
Keyed by home key / credential fingerprint under an override, credentials read
through the secret scope, warm threads run under copy_context(); unscoped module
slots stay for the single-profile path and the existing monkeypatch tests.
Under gateway.multiplex_profiles, os.environ holds the DEFAULT profile's .env; a
secondary profile's values exist only in the per-turn secret scope. Every reader
below still read os.environ/os.getenv at call time, so a secondary profile's turn
silently used the default profile's value.
Credentials (F6): FIRECRAWL_API_KEY (read_file hosted OCR), OPENVIKING_API_KEY,
mem0-OSS OPENAI_API_KEY, MODAL_TOKEN_ID/SECRET and BROWSER_USE_API_KEY presence
gates, and the xAI video plugin's os.getenv("XAI_API_KEY") fallback AFTER the
scoped resolver had already missed — the exact fallback-after-miss shape
gateway/AGENTS.md forbids. Deleted, not re-scoped: the resolver is the scope.
Identity / tenant (F7): MEM0_USER_ID/AGENT_ID/HOST/MODE, SUPERMEMORY_CONTAINER_TAG,
RETAINDB_PROJECT, OPENVIKING_ACCOUNT/USER/AGENT (and the whole layered() env
read), HINDSIGHT_BANK_ID/MODE/retain shaping, HERMES_HONCHO_HOST. A raw read
put a secondary profile's memories into the default profile's account/bank/
project/tenant and recalled them back into the default's turns. Each now uses
get_secret with the provider's own per-profile default on a miss.
Endpoints (F8): OPENAI_BASE_URL (aux custom runtime + direct-alias expansion),
XAI_BASE_URL/HERMES_XAI_BASE_URL (aux OAuth), NOUS_INFERENCE_BASE_URL (#65941,
both the aux builder and hermes_cli.auth_nous._nous_inference_env_override),
GATEWAY_PROXY_URL (same UnscopedSecretError-only fallback shape as
GATEWAY_PROXY_KEY three lines below), FIRECRAWL_API_URL, BROWSERBASE_BASE_URL,
SUPERMEMORY/RETAINDB/HONCHO/HINDSIGHT URLs. The keys beside them were already
scoped, so a secondary's key was sent to the default profile's proxy or host.
Targets / display (F11): WEIXIN_HOME_CHANNEL (message posted into the default's
chat), HERMES_LANGUAGE, and agent/i18n's process-wide lru_cache of
display.language — now keyed by HERMES_HOME.
Outbound webhooks: hooks.outbound[].secret_env resolved from os.environ while
the gateway registers each profile's targets inside that profile's scope, so a
secondary's deliveries were signed with the default's secret or left unsigned.
Agent-cache eviction: _spawn_release_thread started a bare threading.Thread, so
commit_memory_session -> provider on_session_end ran with an EMPTY context. The
thread now runs copy_context() and, for the unscoped housekeeping sweep, enters
the owning profile's _profile_runtime_scope resolved from the session key
(agent:<profile>:...). The pressure batch does the same per key.
session_search (#82903): agent/inline_tool_executors.py::_session_search
forwarded every schema argument except `profile`, so a gateway agent could
never select a named profile's store. Forwarded; the ownership-scoping design
in #87779/#87847 is a separate design call and is not attempted here.
Live repro (/tmp/mux_audit/fix-tool-memory-reads/repro.py): 28 FAIL on
origin/main -> 0 FAIL with this change; 10 new invariant tests red on base.

For each issue anchor present in BASE 63279301bc non-test .py and absent on HEAD, the BASE comment/docstring block was re-attached at the HEAD location of the code it explained (matched by the distinctive code line / enclosing def). Sentences already covered by an existing HEAD comment were deduped; the issue number always survives. Insert-only: no code lines changed.
Remove the implicit hermes peer and the peer question from new connection setup. Preserve explicit peer settings and keep memory paths consistent with the captured client identity.
Add setup, configuration, request, recall, and session regression tests, plus upgrade guidance.
Anonymous probes (_anonymous_json) are designed to probe server identity
before disclosing credentials. Sending the Hermes version on these probes
would fingerprint the exact version to an untrusted/MITM endpoint.
Keep User-Agent on authenticated requests (_headers) and multipart uploads
(_multipart_headers), which already send credentials.
- Key _user_space_cache on _conn_snapshot instead of client object identity,
so _new_client() results from the same connection share the cached user
(previously every on_memory_write triggered an uncached /api/v1/system/status
probe with a 30s default timeout)
- Thread a short timeout (0.05s) through the write-path identity probe
- Harden _tool_remember to snapshot the client before URI construction + POST,
matching the pattern already established in on_memory_write
- Remove dead instance method _user_scoped_uri (zero callers; all call sites
use the module-level function directly)

Review follow-up to the viking://~ migration: the ~ home alias only
expands for USER/ADMIN roles. The DEFAULT dev auth mode (no
server.auth_mode, no root_api_key) resolves every request as ROOT,
which bypasses current-user expansion — the canonical parser rejects
viking://~ with 400 'Home alias URI is not canonical' (verified on a
live 0.4.16 server). A deployment upgrading to 0.4.16 with an
untouched ov.conf is in dev mode, so the ~ spelling would break
exactly the way the old uid-less one will.
Mirror the upstream first-party plugin pattern instead: resolve the
user space client-side from /api/v1/system/status (result.user,
'default' fallback) and emit explicit-uid
viking://user/<user>/memories/... URIs, which are canonical under
every auth mode (dev/ROOT, trusted/USER, api-key) and every server
version. viking://~/... input typed by the user keeps passing through
untouched. (#91995)
Upstream OpenViking removed the uid-less viking://user/<segment>
shorthand (#4196, merged 2026-08-21): reserved segments like memories
and peers no longer expand to the caller's space and the server
rejects them with HTTP 400 (NamespaceShapeError). First-party clients
were migrated to viking://~ in the same change; the Hermes plugin was
not (#91995).
Migrate every URI the plugin constructs — the profile/preferences/
entities session-start reads, the _build_memory_uri memory-mirroring
write path, and the tool-schema example — to viking://~/... README
uid-less references updated to match; canonical user-scoped forms
(viking://user/default/...) are unchanged. The ~ alias requires
OpenViking server >= 0.4.16 (#4167).
f1ea4a56c ("cover the remaining setup-time .env reads with utf-8-sig",
following 75afc47ba for mem0/hindsight) swept this class; openviking's
_write_env_vars was missed and still reads with strict utf-8.
It copies every existing line through on each update, so the read decides
whether a credential update lands:
BOM'd .env -> the first key never matches, so the old line survives and
the new value is appended as a duplicate. .env loaders keep
the first occurrence, so the update silently does nothing.
cp1252 .env -> UnicodeDecodeError aborts setup outright.
Read exactly like the canonical hermes_cli/config.py save_env_value
(utf-8-sig + errors="replace"). A plain UTF-8 file rewrites byte-identically.
Scope: hermes_cli/memory_setup.py has the same read but is already the
subject of #30281 / #60587, so it is left alone here.

Simplify-code findings:
- _authenticated_json: replace manual header construction with
self._headers(include_tenant=False) — eliminates duplication with
_headers() and includes Content-Type consistently.
- _health_requires_credentials: replace getattr(exc, 'status_code')
with _status_code_from_error(exc) for consistency with the existing
error-classification utility. Drop the fragile string-matching
fallback — _parse_response always sets status_code on
_OpenVikingHTTPError, so 401/403 check is sufficient.
- Relax test header assertions to check presence/absence of specific
headers rather than exact dict equality, so they survive the
header-construction refactor.
Hosted OpenViking (Volcengine) rejects anonymous GET /health with
AuthenticationError, which made the provider look unhealthy and silently
disabled automatic memory mirroring. Keep the anonymous probe first for
identity safety, then retry once with the configured API key only when
the server demands credentials.

Review follow-up for salvaged PR #76782. Three setup-wizard
validation functions called _normalize_openviking_url outside their
try/except blocks. Since _normalize_openviking_url now raises
_OpenVikingEndpointError for blocked or malformed endpoints, an
invalid endpoint would crash the wizard instead of returning a
friendly (False, message) tuple.
- _validate_openviking_auth: move _normalize_openviking_url inside try
- _validate_openviking_root_access: same
- _validate_openviking_setup_values: catch _OpenVikingEndpointError explicitly
- Remove dead ternary in _normalize_openviking_url safety check (candidate
always has http/https scheme by that point)
- Replace redundant float('-inf') < x < float('inf') with math.isfinite()
in _setting_float; drop the redundant infinity check from _setting_int
(is_integer() already rejects inf/nan)
_recall_config() previously read all settings (recall_limit, score_threshold,
recall_resources, etc.) exclusively from environment variables. This forced
users to store behavioural configuration in .env, violating the Hermes
convention that .env is for secrets only.
The infrastructure to load config.yaml -> memory.openviking was already in
place via _load_hermes_openviking_config(), but _recall_config() never
called it.
Fix: call _load_hermes_openviking_config() and pass its values as the
default parameter to _env_int/_env_float/_env_bool. Env vars still override
config.yaml values, preserving backward compatibility.

OpenViking is_available() only consulted env vars and use_ovcli_config, so an
endpoint saved to config.yaml (e.g. by the Dashboard) reported needs_config;
_resolve_connection_settings() likewise never folded config.yaml's non-secret
fields into its chain. RetainDB initialize() read base_url/project from the
environment only, ignoring the values the Dashboard writes to config.yaml.
Both now resolve non-secret fields as env -> (ovcli ->) config.yaml -> default;
secrets still come from the environment. Adds regression tests for both.

`_committed_session_ids` is a permanent per-sid latch, and
`_session_needs_commit` checks it before the turn counter by design — a
racing sync_turn can re-increment `_turn_count` after commit+reset, so
the guard must win to stop a double-commit.
That is correct for a session being left behind. It is wrong for one
that keeps its id. `compress_context()` commits before rewriting the
transcript in both modes, and with `compression.in_place: true` (the
default) `on_session_switch` receives the same id and does not rotate.
The latch then rejects every later commit for a still-live session — the
next compression, /new, normal session end, startup recovery — so every
post-compression turn is silently never extracted.
Rotation mode is unaffected because a fresh child id is minted and
starts clean, which is what confirms the latch's intent was only ever to
dedupe the departing id.
Clear the latch when compression completes without rotation. Turns
arriving after that point are genuinely new, and this is a defined
moment rather than a race. The rotation path is untouched, so the old
id stays latched and its _finalize_session_async still dedupes against
the compression commit.
