Each test is red on origin/main and green on the fix; each also asserts the
control case (evicted LSP file re-opens with diagnostics, every log line
written once, unexpired fuzzy root kept, every hindsight turn shipped once).
Trims the hindsight comment to the why.
_session_turns accumulated every turn's text for the whole session, reset
only at session boundaries, so a never-ending session grew without bound
independent of context compaction.
In append mode each retain ships only the delta since the last watermark
(_session_turns[_last_retained_turn_count:]), and a retained turn is never
read again — sync_turn always slices from the watermark and flush-on-switch
flushes what's left. So after an append retain the buffer drops the retained
prefix (clear() + reset the watermark), bounding it to the un-retained tail.
Overwrite mode is deliberately untouched: legacy/overwrite APIs resend the
whole session each retain because each retain replaces the document, so that
path must keep every turn.
Tests: append trims the retained prefix while shipping every turn exactly
once (no loss, no duplication), stays bounded across 100+ turns, and
overwrite mode keeps the full buffer.

Squash of the 54 commits on victor-kyriazakos:feat/user-channel-warning-suppression
(PR #112302, head f45c640e55) so the contributor's authorship survives a rebase-merge;
the commits interleave with a cron delivery-ledger rework that the salvage removes in
follow-up commits, so per-commit cherry-picks were not practical.
Adds display.suppress_warning_notifications (global + per-platform, default false):
one resolver (gateway/warning_notifications.py), BasePlatformAdapter.emit_warning /
emit_media_warning / warning_text, a notification_category classification carried
through wakes, queues and persistence, and render/present boundaries for CLI/TUI.
Port from earendil-works/pi#8337 (UTF-8 BOM normalization in text inputs):
sibling sites the merged #81967 BOM sweep missed. json.loads hard-fails on
a leading U+FEFF and every one of these loaders swallows the exception and
silently falls back to defaults — a user who edited mem0.json, honcho.json,
hindsight/config.json, or supermemory.json in Notepad lost their whole
config with no error, and Qwen CLI OAuth creds saved with a BOM raised
qwen_auth_read_failed.
- plugins/memory/{honcho,mem0,hindsight,supermemory}: 13 read sites -> utf-8-sig
- hermes_cli/auth.py: _read_qwen_cli_tokens -> utf-8-sig
- tests: BOM regression tests per loader (sabotage-proven) + plain-UTF-8 guard
`langfuse._secret` and `azure_identity_adapter._scoped_env` were changed to
raise rather than fall back, because swallowing `UnscopedSecretError` hides the
spawn-site bug the exception exists to surface. `_scoped_setting` looked like it
contradicted that, so make the split explicit and pin it.
Hindsight already follows the contract for everything that decides WHERE data
goes: `mode`, `apiKey` and the `bankId` partition read through bare
`get_secret`, so a scopeless multiplexed read raises. In `_load_config` that
raise happens on `HINDSIGHT_MODE` before any shaping value is reached, so the
swallow below cannot mask an isolation failure.
Presentation shaping is deliberately not in that class. `MemoryManager._each_provider`
logs an `initialize` failure at WARNING and drops the provider for the session,
so raising there would cost the whole memory provider because a speaker prefix
could not be resolved. It degrades to the provider's own default instead —
never to `os.environ`, which under multiplex is the default profile's.
The test names the offending key rather than asserting that something raised:
routing `mode` through the shaping helper shifts the failure to
`HINDSIGHT_API_KEY`, which a bare `pytest.raises` would still accept.
_load_config() reads the Hindsight bank, mode and retain tags through the profile
secret scope, but _apply_retain_settings() then discarded that answer and re-read
os.environ whenever the config value was falsy:
return cfg.get(key) or os.environ.get(env_var, default)
Under gateway.multiplex_profiles os.environ holds the DEFAULT profile's .env, so a
secondary profile's scoped miss came back as the default profile's retain tags,
observation scopes, source and speaker prefixes — the fallback-after-miss shape
gateway/AGENTS.md forbids. Tags are Hindsight's retrieval partition and
metadata.source is opt-in by design, so the secondary's memories were both
mislabelled and selectable by the default profile's tag filters.
Both halves now go through _scoped_setting(), which resolves the value with
get_secret() and falls back to the provider's OWN default — a miss is a miss, the
same rule embedded.py already applies to the daemon's key and base URL. The three
raw reads left inside _load_config() (retain_source, retain_user_prefix,
retain_assistant_prefix), directly under the comment declaring them per-profile,
go through it too.
Single-profile deployments are unchanged: with no scope installed get_secret()
still reads the process env, where the value IS this profile's own.
Fixes#108865
read_json_or_empty returns {} for malformed JSON; returning that directly from
_load_config made a corrupt profile config.json yield an empty (silently
unconfigured) mapping where the pre-dedup loop kept walking to the legacy
file and then the env branch. Only a non-empty parsed object is now returned.
Six of eight memory providers spawned plain threading.Thread for prefetch/sync/
writer work. A plain thread starts with an EMPTY contextvars.Context, so under
multiplex profiles the worker resolved the DEFAULT profile's HERMES_HOME (and
fails closed on scoped secrets). honcho and hindsight had each noticed and
written their own copy_context() wrapper; core had a third in memory_manager.
One canonical pair now lives on the ABC module every provider already imports:
agent/memory_provider.py::ctx_bound / spawn_context_thread. memory_manager,
honcho, hindsight, mem0, retaindb, byterover, supermemory and openviking all use
it; the honcho and hindsight wrappers and memory_manager._ctx_bound are deleted.
Five "json.loads(path.read_text()) or {}" readers (mem0._read_mem0_json,
honcho client/oauth/cli _read_config, hindsight save_config/_load_config) fold
into utils.read_json_or_empty, the read half of every read-merge-atomic_json_write
sidecar store.
holographic.save_config was the only config.yaml writer in the tree that
bypassed hermes_cli.config.save_config: raw open("w") + yaml.dump with no config
lock, no managed-mode refusal, no atomic replace, and a swallowed exception. It
now calls save_config(..., merge_existing=True). Behavior change: a managed
install refuses the write (previously silently rewrote config.yaml); other
sections are deep-merged instead of round-tripped through a raw dump.
openviking._hermes_home_path guarded an impossible ImportError of
hermes_constants (the module already imports agent.*) with a ~/.hermes fallback
that is wrong on Windows and under profile overrides; it is replaced by
get_hermes_home() directly.
Tests: tests/plugins/memory/test_provider_threads_inherit_profile.py drives each
provider's real spawn path with a fake backend and asserts the thread sees the
spawner's HERMES_HOME override (sabotage: retaindb back on threading.Thread ->
red). tests/plugins/memory/test_holographic_save_config.py pins merge-with-
existing-sections and managed-mode refusal (sabotage: raw yaml.dump -> red).
Ramp Router efforts cache + warm/disk flags, xAI and OpenRouter image catalogs,
Hindsight append-capability verdict, memory-provider skill registry, OpenViking
atexit provider, Honcho loopback flow status, Langfuse client (os.environ-only
credentials) and disk-cleanup's protected cron paths held one profile's
credential- or home-derived value process-wide; YuanbaoAdapter._active_instance
was last-connected-wins across profiles.
Keyed by home key / credential fingerprint under an override, credentials read
through the secret scope, warm threads run under copy_context(); unscoped module
slots stay for the single-profile path and the existing monkeypatch tests.
Under gateway.multiplex_profiles, os.environ holds the DEFAULT profile's .env; a
secondary profile's values exist only in the per-turn secret scope. Every reader
below still read os.environ/os.getenv at call time, so a secondary profile's turn
silently used the default profile's value.
Credentials (F6): FIRECRAWL_API_KEY (read_file hosted OCR), OPENVIKING_API_KEY,
mem0-OSS OPENAI_API_KEY, MODAL_TOKEN_ID/SECRET and BROWSER_USE_API_KEY presence
gates, and the xAI video plugin's os.getenv("XAI_API_KEY") fallback AFTER the
scoped resolver had already missed — the exact fallback-after-miss shape
gateway/AGENTS.md forbids. Deleted, not re-scoped: the resolver is the scope.
Identity / tenant (F7): MEM0_USER_ID/AGENT_ID/HOST/MODE, SUPERMEMORY_CONTAINER_TAG,
RETAINDB_PROJECT, OPENVIKING_ACCOUNT/USER/AGENT (and the whole layered() env
read), HINDSIGHT_BANK_ID/MODE/retain shaping, HERMES_HONCHO_HOST. A raw read
put a secondary profile's memories into the default profile's account/bank/
project/tenant and recalled them back into the default's turns. Each now uses
get_secret with the provider's own per-profile default on a miss.
Endpoints (F8): OPENAI_BASE_URL (aux custom runtime + direct-alias expansion),
XAI_BASE_URL/HERMES_XAI_BASE_URL (aux OAuth), NOUS_INFERENCE_BASE_URL (#65941,
both the aux builder and hermes_cli.auth_nous._nous_inference_env_override),
GATEWAY_PROXY_URL (same UnscopedSecretError-only fallback shape as
GATEWAY_PROXY_KEY three lines below), FIRECRAWL_API_URL, BROWSERBASE_BASE_URL,
SUPERMEMORY/RETAINDB/HONCHO/HINDSIGHT URLs. The keys beside them were already
scoped, so a secondary's key was sent to the default profile's proxy or host.
Targets / display (F11): WEIXIN_HOME_CHANNEL (message posted into the default's
chat), HERMES_LANGUAGE, and agent/i18n's process-wide lru_cache of
display.language — now keyed by HERMES_HOME.
Outbound webhooks: hooks.outbound[].secret_env resolved from os.environ while
the gateway registers each profile's targets inside that profile's scope, so a
secondary's deliveries were signed with the default's secret or left unsigned.
Agent-cache eviction: _spawn_release_thread started a bare threading.Thread, so
commit_memory_session -> provider on_session_end ran with an EMPTY context. The
thread now runs copy_context() and, for the unscoped housekeeping sweep, enters
the owning profile's _profile_runtime_scope resolved from the session key
(agent:<profile>:...). The pressure batch does the same per key.
session_search (#82903): agent/inline_tool_executors.py::_session_search
forwarded every schema argument except `profile`, so a gateway agent could
never select a named profile's store. Forwarded; the ownership-scoping design
in #87779/#87847 is a separate design call and is not attempted here.
Live repro (/tmp/mux_audit/fix-tool-memory-reads/repro.py): 28 FAIL on
origin/main -> 0 FAIL with this change; 10 new invariant tests red on base.

The vault item is named HINDSIGHT_API_LLM_API_KEY (matching the daemon env var), while the setup wizard uses HINDSIGHT_LLM_API_KEY. Vault-fed scopes carrying only the API-prefixed name resolved empty, so the scopeless path — and the whole fail-closed machinery — never engaged on real deployments. Accept both names.
Proven end-to-end: hydrated scope now resolves the 73-char key and the rewrite gate passes.

The embedded daemon-start worker usually runs with no secret scope, so _embedded_llm_api_key resolved empty and both the profile-env compare and the upstream manager merge overwrote the file's good key with emptiness.
- _embedded_llm_api_key: explicit config, then secret scope, then on-disk profile env fallback; UnscopedSecretError treated as empty without touching os.environ (multiplex safety).
- Add _may_rewrite_profile_env gate: refuse rewrite on keyless-build plus keyed-disk, and skip the daemon stop in that case.
- Document key resolution order in plugins/memory/hindsight/README.md.
- Add 5 tests pinning disk fallback, the gate's refuse branch, rotation, keyless providers, and file survival.

The Sep 2026 decomposition (PR #102117) makes internal import paths a non-API: names now live in
the focused modules that define them. This commit is the ONLY thing keeping the old paths alive,
so external plugins have time to update. It is deliberately a single, unsquashed commit:
git revert <this sha>
removes every shim, stub and manifest at once on the announced date. Nothing in-tree may depend on
these pointers: scripts/check_compat_pointers.py (wired into lint.yml) fails CI if it does.
What it adds (see COMPAT_MANIFEST.md, compat_manifest.json):
- 332 facade modules get one delimited `PLUGIN-COMPAT` block appended at the end of the file
- 1,172 moved names resolved lazily via a module `__getattr__` (PEP 562) — never a top-level import,
so no import cycles; facades that already had `__getattr__` get a chained one
- 592 third-party/stdlib names the old modules used to expose, with their original import statements
- 266 public definitions that had been deleted as unused, restored byte-for-byte from the pre-decomposition
tree (+40 private helpers and 16 imports pulled in only because a restored definition needs them)
- 3 deleted modules recreated as re-export stubs (gateway/startup_watchdog, hermes_cli/observability/
relay_runtime, tools/environments/modal_utils)
- private names (`_x`) get no pointer: they were never API (3,792 skipped)
Verified: all 335 touched modules import under a fresh HERMES_HOME and every manifest name resolves;
the lint reports zero in-tree uses; ruff clean; targeted suites unchanged.
For each issue anchor present in BASE 63279301bc non-test .py and absent on HEAD, the BASE comment/docstring block was re-attached at the HEAD location of the code it explained (matched by the distinctive code line / enclosing def). Sentences already covered by an existing HEAD comment were deduped; the issue number always survives. Insert-only: no code lines changed.
Under multiplex_profiles the Hindsight provider's writer, daemon-start and
prefetch threads were spawned as bare threading.Thread, so they started with
an empty contextvars Context: no profile secret scope and no HERMES_HOME
override. get_secret() fails closed there, so the local_embedded daemon never
booted and every retain raised UnscopedSecretError, even though the spawning
thread (initialize()/sync_turn() inside the gateway's copy_context'd turn) had
the scope all along.
Spawn each thread with contextvars.copy_context().run so the child inherits
the spawner's scope + home override. No environ fallback, no re-parsed .env.
The shared hindsight-loop thread needs no wrap: coroutines submitted via
run_coroutine_threadsafe already run in the submitter's context per call.

Adds an optional occurred_at (ISO-8601 date/datetime) parameter to the
hindsight_retain tool schema, threaded into the retain item's timestamp
field. When absent, the item timestamp defaults to the configured event
clock (base from PR #82928 by @ragingbulld, authorship preserved) so the
Hindsight server can resolve relative time phrases; previously no item
timestamp was ever sent and temporal memories landed with null
occurred_start/occurred_end.
Fixes#93568. Salvages #82928.
Use Hermes timezone-aware timestamps for retained events and turn messages. Pass the public timestamp field supported by hindsight-client 0.6.1 and cover the final serialized request field.
1. Use open_credentialed_url() instead of bare urlopen() in
templates.py apply_template() and probe_existing_customization().
Both send Authorization: Bearer headers; bare urlopen forwards
credentials on cross-origin redirects. The codebase has
open_credentialed_url() in hermes_cli/urllib_security.py that
strips credentials on cross-origin redirects — used by 4 other
modules.
2. Guard unavailable_reason() with the dedup set check before
calling it. The gateway builds a fresh AIAgent per message, so
without this guard unavailable_reason() (which calls _load_config()
→ stat + file read + JSON parse, and _check_local_runtime() →
importlib probes) runs on every gateway turn for an unavailable
provider, even though the warning is deduped after the first.
3. Move INDICATOR_GLYPH from Hindsight's eye emoji to a generic
brain (🧠) in core (agent/memory_provider.py). Hindsight overrides
with its own _HINDSIGHT_GLYPH (👁️) in recall_status() and
_emit_saving_indicator(). Other memory providers no longer inherit
Hindsight's brand mark as the default glyph.
Bundles previously-separate Hindsight/memory PRs into a single review surface:
- opt-in synchronous recall (recall_sync) — recall the injected memory in-turn instead of next-turn prefetch (#5820)
- actionable error when local_embedded runtime is missing — tells the user which package to install (#7718)
- default retain_source to 'hermes' so every stored memory self-identifies its provenance
- offer a starter memory template during hermes memory setup, plus warn before overwriting an already-configured bank
- warn when a configured memory provider reports unavailable (#2765)
- deterministic 'recalled N memories' recall indicator — Hermes itself emits a status line when auto-recall injects memory
- 'saving to memory' retain indicator — emitted the moment a turn is dispatched to the writer
Authored by @benfrank241 (ben.bartholomew@vectorize.io).
Salvaged from PR #74379.
Route HINDSIGHT_API_KEY/HINDSIGHT_LLM_API_KEY, HONCHO_API_KEY, SUPERMEMORY_API_KEY, MEM0_API_KEY and RETAINDB_API_KEY reads through agent.secret_scope.get_secret so multiplexed turns resolve the active profile's key instead of the process environment. Also guard supermemory post_setup's os.environ write on not is_multiplex_active() — writing one profile's key into the process-global env pollutes sibling profiles; the single-profile convenience path is unchanged.
Review follow-up on the #62871 salvage (simplify pass, HIGH):
1. Ops unresolved at the wait deadline were RETAINED in the pending set.
A permanently failing status endpoint (auth error, endless 500s, or a
server that loses ops without 404) would grow the set forever and make
EVERY later prefetch burn the full 10s budget re-polling it — and
prefetch()'s bounded 3s join sits on the reply path, so that money-quote
'adds no response latency' claim breaks. Timed-out ops are now dropped
(identical degradation to prefetch_waits_for_retain=False: possibly
stale recall) with a WARNING so persistent server trouble is visible.
Guard test mutation-checked (fails with eviction disabled).
2. Status polls now spaced 0.5s (was 0.05s shared with the local drain
poll): a wedged op cost up to ~200 get_operation_status round trips
per prefetch; now ~20 max over the default 10s budget.
Address PR #62871 review: with the default retain_async=True, aretain_batch
returns when the write is accepted, not when it's durable/recall-visible, so
draining the local writer queue (task_done) is not a read-after-write signal.
The next-turn prefetch could still recall before the just-completed turn was
observable on the server.
- Track the async operation_id/operation_ids returned by aretain_batch
- _wait_for_retains_drained now applies two ordered, budget-bounded barriers:
(1) local writer queue drains, then (2) tracked server-side async ops report
completion via operations.get_operation_status (an explicit read-after-write
condition). NotFound (completed+evicted) counts as done; transient errors
keep waiting until the deadline
- Completed ops are removed from the pending set so later prefetches don't
re-poll them; the whole wait stays off the reply path
- Add TestPrefetchServerRetainVisibility: op-id tracking (single/multiple),
no-op tracking when retain_async=False, prefetch waiting for server
completion before recall, timeout fallback on a wedged op, and NotFound /
transient-error status handling
Async retain already keeps the memory WRITE off the reply path (writes drain
on the single writer thread while the user gets their response immediately).
This closes the remaining retain/prefetch race: the next turn's warm prefetch
runs on its own thread and could recall BEFORE the just-enqueued retain write
lands, silently dropping the latest turn from recall.
- The background prefetch now waits (bounded) for pending retains to drain
before recalling, so warmed context includes the just-completed turn.
- The wait runs only on the background prefetch thread, never the reply path,
so it adds zero latency to the user's response and loses no writes.
- Bounded by prefetch_retain_drain_timeout (default 10s) and polls
unfinished_tasks so a wedged write can't hang the prefetch.
- New config keys: prefetch_waits_for_retain (default true),
prefetch_retain_drain_timeout (default 10.0).
The embedded Hindsight daemon's profile env file carries the plaintext
HINDSIGHT_API_LLM_API_KEY but was written via bare write_text(), leaving
it with umask-derived (typically world-readable) permissions.
- Create/truncate the file via os.open(..., 0o600); chmod a pre-existing
file to 0600 BEFORE writing new secret bytes.
- Post-write validation on POSIX: verify 0600, retry chmod, and raise if
the file still isn't owner-only.
- If validation fails, unlink the secret file so a plaintext key is never
left behind with unverified permissions.
- Regression tests under tests/plugins/ for fresh-write mode, tightening a
pre-existing 0644 file, and cleanup on validation failure.
Narrowed reimplementation of #74236 confined to plugins/memory/hindsight/;
the core utils.py atomic-replace opt-out from the PR was dropped.

Widen NS-605 to the two remaining direct-install sites in the hindsight
plugin, which still shelled out to 'uv pip install --python
sys.executable' and therefore failed (EROFS/EACCES) on immutable hosted
images with sealed venvs, and lost packages on redeploy:
- post_setup dependency install (~L835): install_specs() with ok /
blocked-reason / stderr handling matching honcho/mem0.
- initialize()-time hindsight-client auto-upgrade (~L1240):
install_specs(); blocked installs log the gate reason with the manual
command instead of a raw subprocess error, and init proceeds.
Audited every other memory plugin (supermemory, byterover, holographic,
openviking, retaindb) for direct pip/uv install subprocess calls: none
remain — their deps flow through plugin.yaml pip_dependencies or
lazy_deps.ensure().
Tests: TestClientAutoUpgradeRoutesThroughLazyDeps — upgrade goes through
install_specs with the exact spec (regression guard asserts no
subprocess.run), blocked upgrade is non-fatal and surfaces the gate
reason. Updated TestPostSetupEnvEncoding stubs to the new install path.
gemini-2.5-flash shuts down Oct 16 2026 (Google deprecation schedule)
and gemini-3-flash-preview is superseded. Update every hardcoded
default to the current GA flash model:
- gemini_native_adapter: probe_gemini_tier + _create_chat_completion
default params; free-tier guidance de-pinned from a specific model's
RPD number so it doesn't stale again
- auxiliary_client: gemini/kilocode fallback aux models,
_OPENROUTER_MODEL, _NOUS_MODEL -> google/gemini-3.6-flash
(verified live on both OpenRouter and Nous portal /models)
- provider plugins: kilocode + vertex default_aux_model
- hindsight memory plugin: gemini provider default
- setup wizard gemini list: 3-flash-preview -> 3.6-flash (matches the
curated picker catalog)
- tests: aux-client assertions that pinned the old default literal now
reference the _NOUS_MODEL constant, so the next default bump can't
break them (change-detector cleanup)
Fixes#32360.
_check_local_runtime() only imported 'hindsight' and
'hindsight_embed.daemon_embed_manager', a strictly weaker import surface
than the embedded daemon actually needs: the daemon imports
sentence_transformers at startup (embeddings + reranker). When the
embedding stack is broken (e.g. a dependency conflict on a shared package
like huggingface-hub), the daemon can never start, yet is_available() and
'hermes memory status' still report Hindsight as available — every
retain/recall then fails silently.
Import sentence_transformers in the same probe so local/local_embedded
availability goes red with the real ImportError as the reason, letting
the agent degrade loudly instead of silently dropping memory. Local path
only; cloud mode is untouched and no network or model download is
triggered by the import.
