Greptile 4198572811: the guard now finds subprocess/os/asyncio calls as ast.Call nodes, so multi-line calls are checked, and the 27 calls it newly flagged (pixel-art ffmpeg and 26 others) pass stdin=DEVNULL.
* refactor(plugins): remove the Sep 2026 decomposition compat layer on schedule
The PLUGIN-COMPAT layer (2776813df3 + d63e380324 + 0a5164cebe) kept pre-#102117 import paths
alive for external plugins until 2026-09-14. That window closed two weeks ago; since then the loader
has already been skipping plugins that use the old paths. This removes the layer itself:
- 328 appended `PLUGIN-COMPAT` blocks (lazy `__getattr__` pointer tables, re-exported third-party
names, restored dead definitions) and the three re-export stub modules
(gateway/startup_watchdog, hermes_cli/observability/relay_runtime, tools/environments/modal_utils)
- COMPAT_MANIFEST.md, compat_manifest.json, scripts/check_compat_pointers.py and its lint step
- the reporting surfaces: CLI banner notice, `hermes plugins compat`, the `hermes doctor` section,
the post-update notice, the Desktop one-time dialog, the loader's pre-import skip and the
`plugins.allow_deprecated_imports` escape hatch
An external plugin that still imports an old path now fails to load with its ImportError as the
reason in `hermes plugins list`, the same path as any broken plugin.
hermes_cli/plugin_compat.py stays as three inert stubs (compat_report, removal_in_effect,
summary_lines): an already-running pre-removal `hermes update` lazy-imports them after the checkout
swap (tests/compat/old_updater_surface.json).
In-tree fallout, both already dead: hermes_cli/setup.py::_check_espeak_ng (no callers; its
`shutil` came from a compat block) and gateway/config.py::SessionResetPolicy ("retained solely for
the scheduled plugin-compat window"). Two test_run_agent patches targeted the removed
`run_agent.handle_function_call` pointer; they now patch `model_tools.handle_function_call`, the
seam production reads, like every sibling test in that file.
* chore: retrigger CI (zero-job startup_failure phantom)
* test: drop resolution allowlist rows for the two deleted which() sites
hermes_cli/setup.py::_check_espeak_ng (dead) and tools/skillevaluator_scan.py::scanner_available
(a restored definition inside a PLUGIN-COMPAT block) no longer exist; the stale-row gate requires
their allowlist entries go with them.
Resolved toward the branch: PM provisions uv/python (main's install.ps1 uv-shim
salvage + its test and workflow steps dropped), the shim re-exec stays retired,
package.json carries no electron-builder block (afterExtract identity stamp wired
into electron-builder.config.cjs instead; after-pack.mjs keeps signing only),
Desktop workspace-deps helpers stay retired. Main's scratch-dir bootstrap
(export_scratch_tmp_env) is taken and re-run after profile resolution.
The kanban artifact examples, MEDIA: example, pdftoppm OCR hint, the
background-poller tee hint and the Windows path note all showed the model a
literal /tmp path, which it copied into its own commands on every platform.
They now point at $TMPDIR (Hermes sets it to its scratch dir) or
~/.hermes/cache/scratch; the two Windows-note mentions that describe why /tmp
is the wrong choice keep the literal with a no-tmp marker.
Three small gaps from the OMP comparison (#77367) that the existing tools
almost covered:
- read_file on .db/.sqlite/.sqlite3 was refused as binary. It now extracts a
schema overview (CREATE per table, row count, first 5 rows, indexes/views)
through the same document-extraction path as .docx/.xlsx, opened read-only
and immutable so a live database is never locked. A .db whose magic bytes are
not SQLite is refused with that reason. The Hermes read denylist now runs
before extraction so protected stores cannot be reached through an extractor.
- read_file reports conflict_blocks: N (plus a hint) when the served range has
balanced <<<<<<< / >>>>>>> marker lines, so the model resolves the conflict
instead of editing around it. A lone marker in prose is not counted.
- web_extract returned 824K chars of raw SQLite bytes as page "content" for a
.sqlite URL (live: Chinook_Sqlite.sqlite via the configured backend). Bodies
starting with an unambiguous file signature (SQLite, ZIP, gzip, xz, 7z, ELF,
Mach-O, PNG/JPEG/GIF/TIFF, FLAC/Ogg) become a typed error pointing at
terminal + read_file. Backends drop NUL bytes, so signatures are compared
NUL-stripped; two-letter signatures (BM, MZ, ID3) are excluded on purpose.
The NEEDS-OCR and EXTRACTION-COVERAGE hints hand-wrapped the path in
single quotes, so a path containing an apostrophe (e.g. "training
team's notebook.pdf") produced an unparseable command — the same slip
this branch already fixes for the jq hint. Both hints now go through
shlex.quote, and the test round-trips the rendered command through
shlex.split.
Same class as the XLSX rPh fix: a phonetic guide annotates the base text and
is not part of it. `_extract_docx` collected every w:t in the paragraph, so a
ruby-annotated run rendered as guide + base ("トウキョウ東京"). Skip the w:rt
subtree; w:rubyBase stays. The phonetic test now covers XLSX shared/inline/rich
and DOCX ruby through the registered read_file handler.
Under gateway.multiplex_profiles, os.environ holds the DEFAULT profile's .env; a
secondary profile's values exist only in the per-turn secret scope. Every reader
below still read os.environ/os.getenv at call time, so a secondary profile's turn
silently used the default profile's value.
Credentials (F6): FIRECRAWL_API_KEY (read_file hosted OCR), OPENVIKING_API_KEY,
mem0-OSS OPENAI_API_KEY, MODAL_TOKEN_ID/SECRET and BROWSER_USE_API_KEY presence
gates, and the xAI video plugin's os.getenv("XAI_API_KEY") fallback AFTER the
scoped resolver had already missed — the exact fallback-after-miss shape
gateway/AGENTS.md forbids. Deleted, not re-scoped: the resolver is the scope.
Identity / tenant (F7): MEM0_USER_ID/AGENT_ID/HOST/MODE, SUPERMEMORY_CONTAINER_TAG,
RETAINDB_PROJECT, OPENVIKING_ACCOUNT/USER/AGENT (and the whole layered() env
read), HINDSIGHT_BANK_ID/MODE/retain shaping, HERMES_HONCHO_HOST. A raw read
put a secondary profile's memories into the default profile's account/bank/
project/tenant and recalled them back into the default's turns. Each now uses
get_secret with the provider's own per-profile default on a miss.
Endpoints (F8): OPENAI_BASE_URL (aux custom runtime + direct-alias expansion),
XAI_BASE_URL/HERMES_XAI_BASE_URL (aux OAuth), NOUS_INFERENCE_BASE_URL (#65941,
both the aux builder and hermes_cli.auth_nous._nous_inference_env_override),
GATEWAY_PROXY_URL (same UnscopedSecretError-only fallback shape as
GATEWAY_PROXY_KEY three lines below), FIRECRAWL_API_URL, BROWSERBASE_BASE_URL,
SUPERMEMORY/RETAINDB/HONCHO/HINDSIGHT URLs. The keys beside them were already
scoped, so a secondary's key was sent to the default profile's proxy or host.
Targets / display (F11): WEIXIN_HOME_CHANNEL (message posted into the default's
chat), HERMES_LANGUAGE, and agent/i18n's process-wide lru_cache of
display.language — now keyed by HERMES_HOME.
Outbound webhooks: hooks.outbound[].secret_env resolved from os.environ while
the gateway registers each profile's targets inside that profile's scope, so a
secondary's deliveries were signed with the default's secret or left unsigned.
Agent-cache eviction: _spawn_release_thread started a bare threading.Thread, so
commit_memory_session -> provider on_session_end ran with an EMPTY context. The
thread now runs copy_context() and, for the unscoped housekeeping sweep, enters
the owning profile's _profile_runtime_scope resolved from the session key
(agent:<profile>:...). The pressure batch does the same per key.
session_search (#82903): agent/inline_tool_executors.py::_session_search
forwarded every schema argument except `profile`, so a gateway agent could
never select a named profile's store. Forwarded; the ownership-scoping design
in #87779/#87847 is a separate design call and is not attempted here.
Live repro (/tmp/mux_audit/fix-tool-memory-reads/repro.py): 28 FAIL on
origin/main -> 0 FAIL with this change; 10 new invariant tests red on base.

The Sep 2026 decomposition (PR #102117) makes internal import paths a non-API: names now live in
the focused modules that define them. This commit is the ONLY thing keeping the old paths alive,
so external plugins have time to update. It is deliberately a single, unsquashed commit:
git revert <this sha>
removes every shim, stub and manifest at once on the announced date. Nothing in-tree may depend on
these pointers: scripts/check_compat_pointers.py (wired into lint.yml) fails CI if it does.
What it adds (see COMPAT_MANIFEST.md, compat_manifest.json):
- 332 facade modules get one delimited `PLUGIN-COMPAT` block appended at the end of the file
- 1,172 moved names resolved lazily via a module `__getattr__` (PEP 562) — never a top-level import,
so no import cycles; facades that already had `__getattr__` get a chained one
- 592 third-party/stdlib names the old modules used to expose, with their original import statements
- 266 public definitions that had been deleted as unused, restored byte-for-byte from the pre-decomposition
tree (+40 private helpers and 16 imports pulled in only because a restored definition needs them)
- 3 deleted modules recreated as re-export stubs (gateway/startup_watchdog, hermes_cli/observability/
relay_runtime, tools/environments/modal_utils)
- private names (`_x`) get no pointer: they were never API (3,792 skipped)
Verified: all 335 touched modules import under a fresh HERMES_HOME and every manifest name resolves;
the lint reports zero in-tree uses; ruff clean; targeted suites unchanged.
For each issue anchor present in BASE 63279301bc non-test .py and absent on HEAD, the BASE comment/docstring block was re-attached at the HEAD location of the code it explained (matched by the distinctive code line / enclosing def). Sentences already covered by an existing HEAD comment were deduped; the issue number always survives. Insert-only: no code lines changed.
- patch_parser: shared _fail/_written/_unified_diff apply helpers, single PatchResult build,
flattened apply loop, merged inert/no-op hunk skips, overlay _remove, dropped never-set
PatchOperation.content
- self_repo_guard: conditional git-mutation predicates as a dispatch table over one _has_flag,
unified git global-option/alias parse, suppress() for resolve/alias/shlex, folded scope and
heredoc scanners
- shell_heredoc: unit scanner and operator parser as single if/elif ladders, unified quote masking
- read_extract: groupby gap runs, single try for anydoc, islice/suppress xlsx loops, folded
notebook/docx render loops, _zip_xml optional -> empty element
- schema_sanitizer: folded rename/type-array/recovery-strip loops, _dict_nodes/_carry_union_meta
- docstrings/comments compacted by hand (every WHY kept)
Verified: tool-schema dump byte-identical (SCHEMA-OK); golden corpus over pure functions and
every registry schema + edge cases byte-identical vs 113f046 base (GOLDEN-OK); 95 test files
2517 passed (2 pre-existing reds in test_web_tools_config also fail on base).
tools/lazy_deps.py was deleted by the pm migration but 8 call sites
still imported it — slack and feishu lazy-install were dead (ImportError
swallowed by platform_registry's ensure_deps_fn guard, platform stayed
disabled with a warning), and cua/anthropic/read_extract/vision/
dashboard self-heal paths silently skipped their installs.
- slack: pm.extras.ensure_and_bind('slack', ...) (slack extra)
- feishu: pm.extras.available / pm.ensure_import('feishu')
- cua_backend: pm.ensure_import('computer-use')
- anthropic_adapter: pm.ensure_import('anthropic')
- read_extract: pm.ensure_import('doc-extract')
- vision_tools: pm.ensure_import('vision') + new 'vision' -> PIL anchor
(extra is a no-op alias, Pillow is core; anchor keeps availability
checks working)
- web_server dashboard import: pm.ensure_import('web')
- web_server memory-provider pip install surface: the deleted
install_specs pipeline is replaced with an actionable manual remedy
status until the plugin-deps workspace bridge wires this surface
- wecom callback docstring: drop the stale LAZY_DEPS vocabulary
test_pin_lockstep now asserts the core pin and doc-extract extra pin
of firecrawl-anydoc agree (pyproject is the single pin authority);
new tests/pm/test_no_lazy_deps.py keeps the migration complete with a
tree-wide contract (scripts/release.py credit comment + the dashboard
legacy surface documented as allowed).
tests/pm 144 passed; touched lazy-install suites green; remaining
tests/plugins failures proven pre-existing on the unmodified tree
(Windows host artifacts).
Introduce the pm store: a unified, hash-verified package store that
replaces lazy_deps and the old installer's ad-hoc tool downloads.
Store tools are provisioned on PATH (ffmpeg, node/npm via pinned uv),
with a resumable 8-way downloader, verify() returning failure reasons,
and adopt() made EPERM-safe. chromium ships in the payload for every
target. The 3600-line install.sh is replaced by a staged bootstrapper
(heavy deps are pm's job after this); setup-hermes.sh, Dockerfile and
nix pin tables are rewired onto the store. Old install-script tests,
lazy_deps/managed_uv/build_info, and the ps1/bash installer test
batteries are removed with the machinery they tested.
Rebuilt from ethie/pm onto upstream/main (ac6c8028e0) after the
utf-8-sig sweep. 16 hot files (main also churned them) hand-merged:
platform adapters, main.py, electron/main.ts, tui_gateway/server.py,
cua_backend, installer-tests workflow, install.sh (full rewrite),
setup-hermes.sh, plugins doc.
* refactor(read_file): capability-gate the anydoc format list; PDF coverage teaching lives in the response-time warning (426 -> 244/291 tok/call)
* feat(read_file): bundle firecrawl-anydoc 0.2.4 in core, typed NeedsOcrError handling, config-gated hosted OCR with local-OCR-first guidance
* refine(read_file): NEEDS-OCR warning hints at checking for an OCR skill without naming one; hosted_ocr knob unadvertised (maintainer-directed)
* simplify(read_file): drop the anydoc schema gate — bundled core dep makes absence a broken install, not a variant; formats stated unconditionally (263 tok/call)
* feat(read_file): PDF wording upgrades to 'scanned or text' when a trusted hosted-OCR route exists (direct key or explicit config; nous gateway excluded until Parse proxy works)
* simplify(read_file): FIRECRAWL_API_KEY is the ONLY hosted-OCR gate — nous gateway route removed (Parse proxy broken), config true no longer unlocks; false still disables
read_file's .ipynb extraction previously dropped cell outputs entirely,
so a notebook's training logs, tracebacks, and printed results were
invisible to the model. Ported LobeHub's token-efficient conversion:
- stream text and error tracebacks are kept (ANSI-stripped, \r
progress-bar rewrites collapsed to the final frame)
- execute_result/display_data prefer text/plain over the HTML twin
- base64 images become sized placeholders ([image/png output — 3 KB,
omitted]); widget state and script-bearing HTML are omitted
- legacy nbformat v3 pyout/pyerr flat-field shapes handled
- per-cell output block capped at 20k chars
The coverage warning listed bare page ranges, which tells the agent
WHERE the gaps are but not WHAT they contain — its only options were
guessing or OCRing everything. Each gap is now labeled with the last
text extracted before it (usually a section divider page), so the agent
can decide which gaps it actually needs and render/OCR only those.
Gap list capped at 20 entries with a summary line for pathological
alternating documents.
anydoc converts the PDF text layer only and emits no image placeholders
or page markers, so a mostly-scanned PDF extracts 'successfully' into
section headers with empty bodies — silent data loss the model cannot
detect. Count per-page text via poppler pdftotext and prepend an
EXTRACTION COVERAGE WARNING naming the empty pages and the recovery
path (pdftoppm + vision_analyze, or the ocr-and-documents skill).
Found on a 311-page HOA resale package where 198 scanned pages
(CC&Rs, Bylaws, Articles, insurance certs) vanished without a trace.
The anydoc path from #79781 passed every covered file straight to
to_markdown with no pre-check. anydoc loads the whole document through
its Rust core and the read_file char budget only applies after
conversion, so one large PDF or deck could pin a tool turn and spike
RAM.
_extract_anydoc now rejects inputs over MAX_ANYDOC_BYTES (50 MB) with
ExtractionError before calling the converter, which routes them to the
existing read_file fallthrough instead of converting. No timeout is
added: the conversion is a synchronous Rust call that cannot be
cancelled from Python, so a thread-based deadline would bound the wait
but leave the RAM burn running in the background.
The first _anydoc() load cached None on any failure (network blip,
missing wheel, pip race), so one bad first try disabled document
extraction for the rest of the process. Long-lived gateway and desktop
workers never recovered.
Failed loads now cool down for ANYDOC_RETRY_SECONDS and retry instead
of sticking, and a lock serializes first use so parallel readers cannot
double-install or race a failure into the cache. Successful loads are
still cached for the process lifetime.
read_file's auto-extraction covered only the stdlib trio (.ipynb/.docx/
.xlsx). firecrawl-anydoc (MIT, Rust core, imports as `anydoc`) converts
Word, PowerPoint, Excel — including legacy .doc/.ppt/.xls — OpenDocument,
RTF, EPUB, and PDF to clean Markdown through one shared document model.
Wiring follows the footprint ladder: no new tool, no hard dependency.
- tools/read_extract.py gains an ANYDOC_EXTENSIONS set that is active
only when the converter imports; the stdlib extractors remain
authoritative for their three formats so behavior is identical with
or without the package.
- tools/lazy_deps.py adds tool.doc_extract (firecrawl-anydoc==0.1.6),
installed on first read of such a file with prompt=False so read_file
can never block. Lazy-only for now: the package's first release was
2026-08-04, inside uv's 14-day exclude-newer quarantine, so the
mirrored pyproject extra lands after it clears.
- Any anydoc ConvertError maps to ExtractionError, falling back to the
existing path/binary handling instead of erroring the tool.
Tests: real-binding suite skips cleanly when the wheel is absent
(verified: 15 passed/3 skipped without it, 18 passed with it), plus an
absent-dep contract class that pins the fallback regardless of local
install state.
