#135348 ran ruff's UP037 autofix with ruff.strict.toml's target-version = "py314". On 3.14
annotations are lazy (PEP 649), so stripping quotes is safe there; on 3.11-3.13 a function or
variable annotation is evaluated when the def or statement runs. Every unquoted annotation that
names the enclosing class (`def clone_for_agent(self) -> ContextEngine`), a class bound later in
the module, or a TYPE_CHECKING-only import now raises NameError on import: 300 modules on main
(gateway.config, run_agent, hermes_state, cron.jobs, the Telegram adapter, ...) fail to import
under 3.11, the update path crashes mid-`hermes update` on any install whose interpreter is
older than 3.14, and the e2e-upgrade suite's retry leg fails with
`NameError: name 'ContextEngine' is not defined`.
- Re-quote exactly the 79 annotations (36 files) that name something unbound when they are
evaluated (including tui_gateway/server.py's `_TurnScopes`, which only reaches that module's
globals through register() after import); no other text changes.
- agent/turn_scripted_prelude.py: `Generator[...]` gets its third argument back. d76cce4f11
applied UP043 (default type args, valid only from 3.13) to a module-level alias, so
`Generator[Y, S]` raises TypeError on 3.11/3.12 and takes gateway.run, agent.conversation_loop
and tui_gateway.{server,ws,entry} down with it.
- ruff.strict.toml target-version = "py311", the requires-python floor. With it UP037 leaves
these quotes alone and only strips the two that are genuinely redundant, which this commit
strips; any future version-gated fix stays valid on every supported Python.
- tests/ci/test_strict_ruff_target.py pins the target to the requires-python floor (red on main).
- tools/browser_tool_install.py: keep pm-clean's frozen old-updater stub; main's
UTF-8 decode fix touched only the npx prefetch body it replaces.
- tests/hermes_cli/test_update_scoped_reconciliation.py: keep pm-clean's test
subset (catch-up rides the PM completion owner) and take main's gateway-less
host evidence (#120740): the updated seed that holds the host at a running
gateway, and the two gateway-less matrices for the source change that merged
cleanly into update_cmd_fleet.py.
The Desktop serve backend polls /api/fs/default-cwd, whose git-branch probe
captured git output with text=True and no encoding. subprocess then decodes
with locale.getencoding() - cp936 on zh-CN Windows - so a UTF-8 branch name or
git's localized stderr raised UnicodeDecodeError inside communicate()'s
_readerthread on every poll ([gateway-crash] ... 'gbk' codec can't decode).
Pin encoding='utf-8', errors='replace' on the remaining in-process captures
whose children emit UTF-8: the git branch probe, the self-repo guard's git
alias read, the Bot Mode DM transport (a Hermes CLI child, stdio forced to
UTF-8; builds on the salvaged errors='replace'), the agent-browser npx probe,
the lightpanda help probe, and the cua-driver stderr drain thread.
Fixes#83851
Same class as the Bot Chat drain wedge already on this branch: every JSON-file
scan guarded "did it parse?" and then assumed the value was a dict. A file
holding `42`, `"oops"` or `[1,2,3]` (corruption, truncated write, foreign tool)
passed the guard and raised AttributeError/TypeError at the first `.get()`,
usually before a single healthy sibling was processed. Each site now treats a
non-object payload like a corrupt file under that subsystem's existing policy:
- tools/bot_relay.py::_expire_if_stale / claim_pending_envelopes — the
envelope is skipped by the sweep and not claimed (same as unparseable).
- tools/browser_lightpanda.py::reap_orphaned_lightpanda — record unlinked,
scan continues.
- tools/write_approval.py::list_pending / get_pending — record skipped with
the existing "unreadable pending record" warning / None.
- tui_gateway/methods_session.py::_legacy_spawn_tree_entry / spawn_tree.load —
scalar snapshot reads as empty / returns the existing 5000 error instead of
violating the SpawnTreeLoadResult contract.
- hermes_cli/local_runtime/binaries.py::manifest_verified — False.
- plugins/platforms/a2a/protocol.py::load_conversation — non-dict lines are
dropped, keeping the declared list[dict] return.
- batch_runner.py::_load_dataset / _scan_completed_prompts_by_content /
_combine_batch_files — line skipped and counted as filtered.
- trajectory_compressor.py::process_entry_async — scalar entry passed through
unchanged.
Ported from the source hunks of PR #114241; its gateway/shutdown_flush.py
drain_transcript_spool hunk is left to open PR #84785, and its
recover_pending_to_db / cron / bot_live_delivery / bot_mode_dm hunks are
already on this branch or on main.

33 read sites across 25 files used BOM-intolerant encoding='utf-8'.
Windows tooling BOMs files it touches; json.load on a BOM'd file fails
with 'Expecting value'. Reads now use utf-8-sig (writes unchanged).
check-windows-footguns.py --all: 33 → 0.
/simplify-code pass on the salvage stack. The hand-rolled module-global
probe cache ignored its binary argument (stale verdict survives a binary
swap) and logged per launch; switch to the repo's established
functools.lru_cache capability-probe pattern (cua_backend, browser_tool),
probe stdout+stderr, share the --http-cache-dir literal via a module
constant, tighten the probe timeout to 3s, and cover the probe's
except branch in tests. Mutation-checked: gate tests fail with the
gate removed and with the probe hardcoded True.
Salvage follow-up for PR #100269. The flag landed upstream in 0.3.x;
binaries before it (e.g. 0.2.8, verified locally) fatally reject the
flag with 'unknown argument', breaking every Browser Use launch.
Probe 'lightpanda help' once per process and omit the flag when the
binary predates it. Also soften the unverified concurrency claim in
the _http_cache_dir docstring and tell docs readers to stop sessions
before deleting the live sqlite cache.
Lightpanda's HTTP cache is opt-in (`--http-cache-dir`, off by default), and
the launcher never passed it, so every Browser Use navigation re-fetched
every asset.
Point all Hermes-spawned instances at one shared cache under
$HERMES_HOME/cache/browser-use/lightpanda/http-cache. Sharing it across
sessions keeps assets warm through session churn; Lightpanda stores it in
sqlite (WAL), so a write that loses a race degrades to a cache miss rather
than a failed load, and --http-cache-entry-limit (default 1000) bounds the
directory without Hermes managing eviction.
Measured over 25 navigations across 5 sites, median warm navigation drops
from 0.40s to 0.18s on news.ycombinator.com and 0.14s to 0.10s on
wikipedia; total navigation time 7.0s -> 5.9s.
The flag has existed since Lightpanda 0.3.x (April 2026), so this needs no
minimum-version bump.
- lightpanda_engine_status: check use_real_profile before the cloud
provider, matching browser_exec's actual resolution order (real-profile
resolution runs before backend resolution), so /browser status and
hermes doctor name the right shadowing setting when both are set.
- launch_lightpanda: drop the unreachable Windows popen_kwargs branch
(find_lightpanda_binary returns None on nt, launch errors out earlier).
- doctor: drop the over-defensive try/except around the cached
_using_lightpanda_engine() config read.
- Docstring: 'no-I/O gates' -> 'no network I/O (config reads only)'.
- New test pinning real-profile-over-cloud-provider reason precedence.
Browser Use mode never read browser.engine: _resolve_backend_cdp() went
BU_CDP_* env -> CDP override -> cloud provider -> local Chrome, so
`engine: lightpanda` was a silent no-op on the default backend, and on
the built-in path it was skipped whenever a cloud provider, Camofox or a
CDP override was active without anyone saying so.
- browser_use_cli: when the engine is lightpanda and nothing with higher
precedence claimed the session, get a session from _get_session_info()
and export its endpoint as BU_CDP_URL; the browser is private to the
session key, so the own-tab preamble is skipped. The browser_exec
description gains a Lightpanda header (text-first, new_tab once then
goto_url — lightpanda-io/browser#1962).
- browser_tool: _create_local_session() spawns `lightpanda serve
--host 127.0.0.1 --port <free>` per session key (new
tools/browser_lightpanda.py), reusing the session cache, inactivity
reaper and atexit cleanup; a dead process is respawned on the next call;
orphans from a crashed Hermes are reaped through per-process records in
$HERMES_HOME/cache/browser-use/lightpanda/. New lightpanda_engine_status()
reports whether the engine is in effect or what shadows it.
- tools_config: "Lightpanda" row in the Browser Automation picker
(cloud_provider: local + engine: lightpanda; "Local Browser" resets the
engine to auto) with a binary-check post-setup.
- /browser status and hermes doctor print the engine state and, when it
is shadowed, the reason.
