* fix(web): keyless search fails over when a free tier refuses the client
Firecrawl's anonymous endpoint answers 403 (an IP reputation gate) for some
clients, and a free tier can also answer 402 (credits gone) or a 5xx. Main
already moves a keyless search to the next ring vendor on a structured
401/403 (2f78707a79, from #91619), but two cases still stopped the walk:
- Keenable's keyless client raised only the response body, without the
status code, so its 401/403 never matched the structured status check.
- The keyless Firecrawl client raised httpx's default "Server error '503 ...'"
text for 5xx, and no status pattern covered 402 or 5xx.
The status pattern now covers 401/402/403 and 5xx, and both keyless clients
raise "HTTP <code>: <vendor reason>", so the walk sees the status and the
error keeps the vendor's reason. Extract keeps main's rule: it fails over
only when every URL is rate-limited, because a 403 there can come from the
page rather than the vendor.
* fix(web): a search error that echoes the query no longer walks the keyless ring (review)
The vendor-refusal status match now judges only the status the error starts with, so 'HTTP 400: invalid query "http 503"' stops the walk instead of trying every free vendor.
Desktop's web picker had no way to send one capability through the Nous
Tool Gateway while the other used your own key. "Use for Search/Extract"
on the Nous Subscription row wrote the row's vendor string (firecrawl)
into web.<cap>_backend, which the runtime reads as BYOK Firecrawl: the
gateway was never used, and the managed and BYOK rows lit up together.
- The managed per-capability pick now stores `nous`; search/extract
dispatch, the registry and the Firecrawl client resolve the route per
capability (search: managed Perplexity, extract: managed Firecrawl).
- A whole-toolset Nous pick clears stale per-capability pins (they
outranked the new selection).
- /api/tools/toolsets/web/config reports search_via_nous /
extract_via_nous and each row's managed_nous_feature; the panel lights
the right row, labels the route, and refetches after a pick instead of
mirroring the vendor string.

self-healing pin clear from #122676 by @praggybuilds.

Review and simplify pass on the guest fast-search restore.
- tools/tool_backend_helpers.py: _account_info was split out so two gates
could share one account read. Only managed_nous_tools_enabled is left, so
fold it back into its pre-salvage shape. Keep the branched force_fresh
call, because tests stub the reader with zero-arg lambdas.
- plugins/web/perplexity/provider.py: the managed= parameter on
_managed_gateway only fed the removed refusal helper. search() now calls
resolve_free_search_gateway() directly once it has the route answer. The
module docstring now names guests.
- hermes_cli/nous_account.py: the _error_info docstring described the
removed gate. The tier carried on a failed lookup still picks the "needs
a Nous account" copy over billing or re-login guidance.
- Tests: the case-insensitive tier match and the tier on error snapshots
lost their only coverage when the gate tests went, so cover them at
their consumer, format_nous_portal_entitlement_message. The fast-search
premise now asserts that the guest case really reads as the anonymous
tier. Remove the dead exp_offset parameter.
- Docs: the Perplexity section said there is no anonymous tier, which is
true for direct keys only. It now names the managed guest route.
The free managed Perplexity fast-search route exists for anonymous guest
Portal users. The salvage of #130121 (cee3000c24, via #130660) added a
registered-account gate, fast_search_entitled(), that excluded the
anonymous tier. That defeated the original change: guests fell back to
the keyless ring and never sent a gateway request.
This removes the gate, so resolve_free_search_gateway() decides on
identity alone again, as rewbs wrote it. The guest-disabled, expiry
refresh and dead-guest rules still apply through the token reader. Every
other vendor, and the billed managed-Firecrawl fallback, keep the paid
entitlement gate.
Kept from the salvage: the case-insensitive is_anonymous_tier, the
account tier carried on error snapshots, and the single route walk per
search dispatch. Tests: the anonymous identity is back in the autodetect
and rescue cases. The tests that pinned the guest exclusion are removed.
#131868 passes timeout=60_000 to the Firecrawl client's scrape() so the
server-side deadline matches our 60 s wait. The SDK accepts it, but the
keyless REST client's scrape() took only url/formats, so every extract
raised TypeError for keyless users with the keyless ring disabled or the
tier pinned to paid. Accept the kwarg and forward it in the v2 payload,
which takes the same field.
The Firecrawl scrape() call was missing the `timeout` parameter, so the
server-side used its 30s default. The client-side asyncio.wait_for
expects 60s, causing SCRAPE_TIMEOUT on slow pages before the Python
deadline expires.
Fix: pass timeout=60000 (ms) to scrape() so both deadlines align.
Fixes#43272
The refusal named a cause that cannot happen. `_vendor_gateway` never contacts the
network, so "unreachable" was wrong for the no-identity, failed-lookup and
not-entitled cases alike — and a guest was told it had no Nous identity when it
holds a perfectly good one.
Root of the guest case: `_error_info` dropped `account_tier`, so a guest whose
account lookup failed — precisely the state where the tier can no longer be read
from the JWT, because the token is inside its refresh window — came back looking
like a registered identity. Carry the stored tier through the error snapshot, and
both this refusal and every other tier-aware surface see it.
Pick the reason in priority order (guest / no usable identity / unreachable) in
one helper beside `fast_search_entitled`, so the predicate and its explanation
cannot drift, and phrase it as a clause for `selection_error`'s "but …" template —
the canonical `FREE_TIER_NEEDS_ACCOUNT` strings are standalone sentences and read
wrong embedded mid-sentence.
Also record why the `error` clause in `fast_search_entitled` is load-bearing
rather than defensive, so it is not removed as belt-and-braces.
The test helper now mirrors what anon_auth actually persists (the tier alongside
the token), which is what makes the failed-lookup case reproducible at all.
Two review findings on the free fast-search route.
A guest with a stored `web.backend: nous` holds a real Nous identity and a
usable token; the route excludes it by tier, not by absence. The refusal said
"no Nous identity or unreachable", which is wrong for exactly the cohort this
route was gated against. Reuse the canonical FREE_TIER_NEEDS_ACCOUNT text for
the anonymous tier and keep the unreachable wording for everyone else.
search() then called _managed_web_search() a third time just to choose that
message, after _managed_gateway() had already resolved the route — a full
autodetect ladder plus a Portal account read and token peek. Let _managed_gateway
accept the answer its caller already computed so a dispatch walks the ladder
once.
Docs: the autodetect row implies the keyless switch governs a registered
identity's web_search. It does not.
The Tool Gateway serves Perplexity POST /search with search_type: "fast"
to any Nous identity without funding checks, but Hermes gated the route
locally behind managed_nous_tools_enabled() (paid access or a live tool
pool), and autodetect only selected managed Perplexity after the gated
Firecrawl probe passed. Anonymous and credit-exhausted users fell through
to the keyless ring without trying it.
Resolve the Perplexity search route on identity alone
(resolve_free_search_gateway: usable Nous token, same guest-disabled and
refresh rules), and let autodetect pick it when nothing explicit is
configured. Every other vendor keeps the entitlement gate, and the billed
managed-Firecrawl fallback now requires it too, so a free-search-only
caller whose call fails goes to the keyless rescue ring as before.
Explicit selections and direct keys keep precedence.
* refactor(plugins): remove the Sep 2026 decomposition compat layer on schedule
The PLUGIN-COMPAT layer (2776813df3 + d63e380324 + 0a5164cebe) kept pre-#102117 import paths
alive for external plugins until 2026-09-14. That window closed two weeks ago; since then the loader
has already been skipping plugins that use the old paths. This removes the layer itself:
- 328 appended `PLUGIN-COMPAT` blocks (lazy `__getattr__` pointer tables, re-exported third-party
names, restored dead definitions) and the three re-export stub modules
(gateway/startup_watchdog, hermes_cli/observability/relay_runtime, tools/environments/modal_utils)
- COMPAT_MANIFEST.md, compat_manifest.json, scripts/check_compat_pointers.py and its lint step
- the reporting surfaces: CLI banner notice, `hermes plugins compat`, the `hermes doctor` section,
the post-update notice, the Desktop one-time dialog, the loader's pre-import skip and the
`plugins.allow_deprecated_imports` escape hatch
An external plugin that still imports an old path now fails to load with its ImportError as the
reason in `hermes plugins list`, the same path as any broken plugin.
hermes_cli/plugin_compat.py stays as three inert stubs (compat_report, removal_in_effect,
summary_lines): an already-running pre-removal `hermes update` lazy-imports them after the checkout
swap (tests/compat/old_updater_surface.json).
In-tree fallout, both already dead: hermes_cli/setup.py::_check_espeak_ng (no callers; its
`shutil` came from a compat block) and gateway/config.py::SessionResetPolicy ("retained solely for
the scheduled plugin-compat window"). Two test_run_agent patches targeted the removed
`run_agent.handle_function_call` pointer; they now patch `model_tools.handle_function_call`, the
seam production reads, like every sibling test in that file.
* chore: retrigger CI (zero-job startup_failure phantom)
* test: drop resolution allowlist rows for the two deleted which() sites
hermes_cli/setup.py::_check_espeak_ng (dead) and tools/skillevaluator_scan.py::scanner_available
(a restored definition inside a PLUGIN-COMPAT block) no longer exist; the stale-row gate requires
their allowlist entries go with them.
Use Perplexity for Nous-managed search, retaining Firecrawl for extract
and as a per-call search fallback. Explicit search overrides and direct
keys keep their own billing paths; fallback results are never cached.
When the managed route is selected but the Tool Gateway is unavailable
(unentitled account or no Nous token), search reports that selection
error instead of asking for a direct key the user never chose.
The managed search vendor is unannounced, so user-facing copy names the
capability rather than the vendor: status, portal and docs say "managed
web search", and the fallback annotation reads `managed_primary`. Direct-key
configuration docs are unchanged.
Routing, auth, payload, cache and entitlement regressions are covered
through real config loading and local HTTP.
Runtime identity resolved through hermes_cli.__version__ (a static 0.0.0
on source installs, rewritten by release stamping) leaked v0.0.0 into
About, /api/health, User-Agents, and plugin compat, and source updates
showed "couldn't reach update server" because identity and channel
authority disagreed with the checkout.
Now: get_version_info() resolves install stamp -> live git -> unknown,
never pyproject metadata, never a package constant. Source checkouts
derive identity from their reachable release tag; the completion tail of
every successful install/update/historical takeover atomically rewrites
install-stamp.json with that identity; a stale source stamp whose commit
no longer matches HEAD defers to live git. ACP/TUI use derived_version
for display and base_version for protocol fields; all ~44 runtime
__version__ consumers migrated; hermes_cli.__version__ and generated
_version.py are gone; release stamping only touches the native manifests
external builders consume (nix/tauri/cargo) and passes release identity
straight into write_install_stamp.py; pyproject.toml stays inert 0.0.0.
Desktop no longer synthesizes a competing install-stamp.json: the
checkout owns its stamp, and desktop-bootstrap classification keys on
the bootstrap-complete marker. verify-bootstrap-version-stamp.py now
cross-checks the checkout's stamp (baseVersion + commit == HEAD).
Validation: 31-file focused suite green (version identity, stamping,
adoption, providers, gateway, acp/tui runtime identity, api server via
extras env, release graph); desktop tsc + 25 vitest green; real-repo
probe: base=unknown derived=git.0635606.dirty source=git on this
checkout; clean-env imports resolve entirely from this tree; windows
footgun + compat-pointer scans clean.
cached_sdk_client returned the client cached on tools.web_tools before it
read the key, so the Exa, Parallel and AsyncParallel clients kept the key
they were first built with for the life of the process. A key fixed in .env
and applied with /reload still sent the old key (401s until a restart), and
on a gateway serving multiplexed profiles every profile's Exa and Parallel
calls went out on whichever profile's key built the client first, billed to
that account. A key removed from the environment also kept being used.
Resolve the key on every call and reuse the cached client only when it was
built with that key; the slot now holds (key, client) as one value so two
builds racing under different keys cannot record one key beside the other
key's client. Firecrawl already compares its credential before reusing its
client; this brings the two SDK-backed providers in line.
Trim of the salvaged openai-native marker provider (#107377):
- `hermes auth --provider openai-codex` does not exist; the login command is
`hermes auth add openai-codex` (hermes_cli/subcommands/auth.py). Fixed in
plugin.yaml, provider.py docstring and the web-search docs (2 spots).
- `hermes tools` picker tag was Chinese; now English like every other provider.
- tests/plugins/web/test_web_search_provider_plugins.py enumerates the bundled
registry exactly, so the new plugin made it fail; it now lists openai-native
with capability flags (search=True, extract=False) — the search-only
invariant that keeps web_extract on its own backend.
- contributors/emails mapping for the salvaged author.
Declares OpenAI's provider-executed Responses `web_search` built-in in place of
the client-side `web_search` function, mirroring the existing xAI native-search
path. Selected via `web.search_backend: openai-native`; search-only, so
`web_extract` keeps resolving to its own backend.
The Responses adapter already recognises built-in tool types
(`_RESPONSES_BUILTIN_TOOL_TYPES`) and preflight passes them through, so the only
missing piece was the swap itself plus a provider name for the config to point at.
Gating is deliberate: two-sided (Codex backend AND a selected openai-native
backend) and fail-closed, so a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint or an
unresolved provider leaves the client tool untouched.
- 15 `MERGE-CHECK:` conflict-resolution comments removed from prod code (two were
TODOs already done: the utf-8-sig sessions.json read lives in session_persistence,
the pm-aware cron script helpers in scheduler_script).
- 49 imports the branch left unused (ruff F401, none present at the merge base,
none inside PLUGIN-COMPAT blocks). update_cmd's frozen-surface re-exports are
trimmed to the names tests/compat/old_updater_surface.json actually lists under
hermes_cli.update_cmd; the rest resolve through hermes_cli.main.__getattr__.
- tools/environments/local_gitbash_probe.py: nothing imported it once _find_bash
delegated to pm.shell().
- Three try/except wrappers around calls that cannot raise (install_truststore,
get_hermes_home, and a duplicated except clause in supermemory).
Reconcile plugin declarations and validation through PM's atomic generation publication; preserve external runtimes, target markers, and conflict refusal. Keep one source-update completion owner and port upstream lifecycle changes to the PM desktop/runtime paths.
Closes the residual left open by the previous commit for gateway-ready
installs (#113017 review). _get_backend() and check_firecrawl_api_key()
already use read_selection semantics, but _get_firecrawl_client() still
keyed its "stored vendor selection: direct only" branch on
selection_exists("web"), which is true for a lone per-capability key. So
with only web.extract_backend set and the Nous Tool Gateway ready (no
FIRECRAWL keys), the search ladder resolved to firecrawl via the managed
slot and the client then refused it with a misleading "web is configured
to use firecrawl (set via hermes tools)" error — the other capability
still lost its normal cascade.
The direct-only branch is now keyed on an explicit firecrawl selection
(shared web.backend via read_selection, or a per-capability key that names
firecrawl via _is_explicit_firecrawl_selection). A per-capability key
naming another vendor is not a firecrawl selection, so a ladder-derived
firecrawl resolves exactly like a never-configured install: direct when
credentials exist, else managed. Explicit firecrawl selections keep their
direct-only (keyless-unlocking) behaviour; "nous" is untouched.
Test: test_ladder_derived_firecrawl_takes_managed_path_on_gateway_ready_install
— red on the previous commit (ValueError), green with this change.
Review follow-up on the keyless Exa UTF-8 fix:
- `_parse_mcp_body` split SSE frames on `\n` only, so a body using bare CR
line terminators (permitted by the SSE spec, and parsed fine before via
`splitlines()`) failed with "Unrecognized MCP response shape". Split on
the SSE terminators CRLF / CR / LF instead.
- `mcp_call` decoded the body as UTF-8 unconditionally, ignoring a charset
the server did declare. Decode with the declared charset when the
Content-Type carries one and fall back to UTF-8 only when it is absent.
- The HTTP >= 400 branch and `_keenable_request` still surfaced
`response.text`, so a non-ASCII error body from a charset-less text/*
response reached the user as ISO-8859-1 mojibake. Both now go through the
same decode helper as the success path.
Exa's MCP endpoint answers `text/event-stream` without a charset, so
`requests` decoded `.text` as ISO-8859-1: every non-ASCII character came back
as mojibake, and for CJK results the UTF-8 continuation byte 0x85 became
U+0085, which `str.splitlines()` treats as a line break — the `data:` JSON
line was cut in two and the perfectly valid result surfaced as "Unrecognized
MCP response shape", after which the ring fell through to keyless Firecrawl
(403). Decode the bytes as UTF-8 (JSON-RPC and SSE are UTF-8 by spec) and
split SSE frames on newlines only. A parsed envelope that really carries no
text is now reported as "no text content" instead of an unrecognized shape.
Add HTTP-Referer, X-Title, User-Agent (HermesAgent/<version>) and
X-Pplx-Integration: hermes-agent to the Perplexity web provider's
/search and /sdk/content/snippets requests. Same static headers Hermes
already sends Kimi and OpenCode; nothing per-user, no extra requests.
Prepare dependency generations before selecting them. Keep shipped tool
bytes separate from writable additions, and store facts beside their entries.
Validate proposed plugin sets before config publication. Restore the previous
config if the facts write fails.
Consolidate duplicate updater, backup, setup, and voice helpers. Repair
launcher selection, dependency consumers, download ownership, update feeds,
and native Windows process and file handling.
Verification: 206 changed/prior-failing Python files reported 4630 passed,
one failed, and 330 skipped. Fix the remaining Hindsight fixture boundary.
The final targeted rerun reported 234 passed and two skipped. The store
review regression batch reported 83 passed and one skipped. Desktop
TypeScript checks, 56 selected Electron tests, 24 release tests, and the
removed-import/compatibility guards passed.
This is an integration checkpoint, not full audit acceptance. The complete
Python suite has not run on this fixed tree. Crash-atomic plugin publication,
generation cleanup, receipt correlation, and packaged lifecycle acceptance
remain open in docs/pm-audit-status.md.
Adds plugins/web/perplexity — a keyed-only WebSearchProvider over httpx:
- search: POST https://api.perplexity.ai/search (documented Search API),
search_context_size=low so `snippet` stays description-sized;
results[].snippet -> description, max_results capped at the API's 20.
- extract: POST /sdk/content/snippets — the query-relevant page-excerpt
route behind `pplx content snippets` (the CLI's `content fetch` is
deprecated upstream). web_extract has no query, so the URLs' path words
serve as the relevance query; per-URL `error` entries survive a 200.
- Wired into the same touchpoints as the other keyed vendors: legacy
backend set + credential ladder + availability probe (web_tools),
registry preference walk, OPTIONAL_ENV_VARS, `hermes config`/status/
dump key lists, nous_subscription direct-credential detection, setup
summary, test conftests, docs.
Not a keyless-ring member (Perplexity has no anonymous tier). Related
closed PRs #9192 / #23981 / #45225 predate the plugin ABC.
Every PLUGIN-COMPAT __getattr__ now calls hermes_cli.plugin_compat.warn_once(facade, name, target) before
resolving, emitting a HermesPluginCompatWarning (FutureWarning) once per process per name: old path, new
path, removal target. Importing a facade for its live API stays silent; only resolving a moved name warns.
COMPAT_MANIFEST.md documents the warning and how to silence it during migration.
Verified the runtime never routes through a pointer: every entry point (run_agent, cli, hermes_cli.main,
gateway.run, tui_gateway.server, web_server, model_tools + tool discovery, hermes_state, cron.scheduler,
browser_tool, mcp_tool, kanban, auth) imports clean and `hermes doctor` runs end to end with the warning
promoted to an error.
Also restores the check_compat_pointers CI step to .github/workflows/lint.yml, which a0be177aac dropped
when the compat layer was regenerated (the lint script itself was present; the workflow step was not).
hermes_cli/plugin_compat.py, tests/test_plugin_compat_warning.py and the two-line insert per facade are
part of the compat layer and go away with it.
The Sep 2026 decomposition (PR #102117) makes internal import paths a non-API: names now live in
the focused modules that define them. This commit is the ONLY thing keeping the old paths alive,
so external plugins have time to update. It is deliberately a single, unsquashed commit:
git revert <this sha>
removes every shim, stub and manifest at once on the announced date. Nothing in-tree may depend on
these pointers: scripts/check_compat_pointers.py (wired into lint.yml) fails CI if it does.
What it adds (see COMPAT_MANIFEST.md, compat_manifest.json):
- 332 facade modules get one delimited `PLUGIN-COMPAT` block appended at the end of the file
- 1,172 moved names resolved lazily via a module `__getattr__` (PEP 562) — never a top-level import,
so no import cycles; facades that already had `__getattr__` get a chained one
- 592 third-party/stdlib names the old modules used to expose, with their original import statements
- 266 public definitions that had been deleted as unused, restored byte-for-byte from the pre-decomposition
tree (+40 private helpers and 16 imports pulled in only because a restored definition needs them)
- 3 deleted modules recreated as re-export stubs (gateway/startup_watchdog, hermes_cli/observability/
relay_runtime, tools/environments/modal_utils)
- private names (`_x`) get no pointer: they were never API (3,792 skipped)
Verified: all 335 touched modules import under a fresh HERMES_HOME and every manifest name resolves;
the lint reports zero in-tree uses; ruff clean; targeted suites unchanged.
dingtalk: drop DINGTALK_TYPE_MAPPING/EXT_MAP re-exports. google_chat: card_spec_to_cards_v2 test -> .cards.
matrix: drop module-level MAX_MESSAGE_LENGTH alias (no importers). teams: drop TeamsSummaryWriter re-export
(teams_pipeline/runtime + tests -> summary_writer). wecom: drop WeComStreamExpiredError/STREAM_EXPIRED_ERRCODE/
MAX_INTERMEDIATE_FRAMES re-exports (tests -> .streaming). parallel: drop _get_parallel_client/_get_async_parallel_client
aliases (tests -> _get_sync_client). email: drop stale 'alias' comment (_esecret_int is the only name).
photon: re-remove credential_summary() (shim-only, cb9b7c36f3); its no-leak test now drives print_credential_summary.
For each issue anchor present in BASE 63279301bc non-test .py and absent on HEAD, the BASE comment/docstring block was re-attached at the HEAD location of the code it explained (matched by the distinctive code line / enclosing def). Sentences already covered by an existing HEAD comment were deduped; the issue number always survives. Insert-only: no code lines changed.
Introduce the pm store: a unified, hash-verified package store that
replaces lazy_deps and the old installer's ad-hoc tool downloads.
Store tools are provisioned on PATH (ffmpeg, node/npm via pinned uv),
with a resumable 8-way downloader, verify() returning failure reasons,
and adopt() made EPERM-safe. chromium ships in the payload for every
target. The 3600-line install.sh is replaced by a staged bootstrapper
(heavy deps are pm's job after this); setup-hermes.sh, Dockerfile and
nix pin tables are rewired onto the store. Old install-script tests,
lazy_deps/managed_uv/build_info, and the ps1/bash installer test
batteries are removed with the machinery they tested.
Rebuilt from ethie/pm onto upstream/main (ac6c8028e0) after the
utf-8-sig sweep. 16 hot files (main also churned them) hand-merged:
platform adapters, main.py, electron/main.ts, tui_gateway/server.py,
cua_backend, installer-tests workflow, install.sh (full rewrite),
setup-hermes.sh, plugins doc.
- Tavily plugin deleted (plugins/web/tavily), keyless endpoints and
ring entry removed from keyless_mcp, legacy backend set / credential
ladder / preference walks / rescue key map scrubbed.
- TAVILY_API_KEY deregistered across config, setup, status, dump, and
nous_subscription surfaces. The tvly- redaction pattern stays --
legacy keys in user envs still deserve masking.
- Sibling test pins migrated (keenable/exa stand in where tavily was
the fixture vendor); tavily test suite deleted.
- Docs updated: web-search, configuration, integrations,
environment-variables, tools-reference, web-dashboard, provider
plugin dev guide.
Live-verified from an isolated HERMES_HOME with all web creds blanked:
zero-config resolution lands in the 4-vendor ring, live keyless ring
search succeeds, no tavily anywhere in resolution order.
Fresh installs with zero web credentials now rotate web_search/
web_extract across FIVE vendors' public free tiers — Exa, Parallel,
Tavily, Firecrawl, Keenable — instead of a 2-vendor 50/50 split, with
next-in-line ring failover on rate limits (multi-hop until a vendor
serves or the ring is exhausted; served_by marks the actual vendor).
- plugins/web/keenable/: new bundled provider (search via /v1/search,
fetch via /v1/fetch; keyed Bearer or keyless with the mandatory
X-Keenable-Title app header). Credit: integration proposed by
Ilya Gusev (Keenable) in #49758; Free/Paid picker rows included.
- keyless_mcp: tavily/firecrawl/keenable keyless search+extract
wrappers, _KEYLESS_RING + per-process round-robin cursor (seeded by
the random session id, advances per unpinned request), pinned-vendor
entry (pin = start there; rotation off), paid-pinned vendors excluded
from the ring entirely.
- Tavily/Firecrawl providers route keyless traffic through the ring;
both are now default-on ring members (no longer selection-gated).
- web_tools/registry: keenable in backend sets, auto-detect, availability
probes; _keyless_preference() delegates to the ring cursor.
- KEENABLE_API_KEY in OPTIONAL_ENV_VARS; docs updated (ring semantics).
Live E2E: all 10 vendorXcapability paths (5 search + 5 extract) served
real results keyless; rotation cycled all five vendors over 5 dispatch
calls; double-throttle failover walked exa->parallel->tavily.
Salvaged from #78434 by @Slobaka (also the issue reporter; earlier than
the competing #78436). hermes doctor no longer paints a green web check
when the explicitly selected provider cannot initialize — web splits
into per-capability rows (web search / web extract) resolved through
the same registry resolvers the dispatchers use, with readiness from a
true availability probe (_provider_is_ready).
Keyless-tier integration on top of the salvage:
- _provider_is_ready counts is_keyless_available() as ready — keyless
mode is a working state, not a misconfiguration (zero-config installs
and selected-keyless Tavily/Firecrawl show ok, not warn)
- Tavily/Firecrawl gain is_keyless_available() (True only when
explicitly selected — they stay out of the zero-config fallback)
- doctor triggers plugin discovery before reading the registry (fresh
doctor processes saw an empty registry and warned on everything)
E2E: searxng-selected-without-URL warns (the #78412 repro);
zero-config, tavily-keyless, firecrawl-keyless all read ok;
parallel pinned paid without a key warns.
- Cross-vendor failover: when Exa's or Parallel's keyless free tier
returns a rate-limit-shaped error, the request retries once on the
other vendor's free endpoint (search + whole-batch extract). Result
notes served_by; a peer pinned to its paid tier is never used;
non-throttle errors never fail over.
- Docs: failover note + Tavily/Firecrawl keyless-when-selected rows.
- Firecrawl keyless test expectations aligned with the keyless tier.
Salvaged from #50659 by @LeonSGP43 onto current main (the client
resolver was rewritten for strict-selection semantics since the PR;
reapplied the keyless mode as a third client_mode inside the new
resolver). An explicit firecrawl selection with no FIRECRAWL_API_KEY /
FIRECRAWL_API_URL now routes through a minimal REST client (v2 search +
scrape, no Authorization header) instead of erroring. Unconfigured
installs never route here — the keyless path requires the explicit
selection. Fixes#49912.
- Updated the Tavily API key description to clarify that it is optional and keyless access is supported.
