Reconcile plugin declarations and validation through PM's atomic generation publication; preserve external runtimes, target markers, and conflict refusal. Keep one source-update completion owner and port upstream lifecycle changes to the PM desktop/runtime paths.
Checkpoints were enabled by default from 9e845a6e (2026-03-16) until #20709
(2026-05-06) flipped the default back to off; the migration of that window
wrote `checkpoints.enabled: true` into user configs, where a later default
flip cannot reach it. Users who never type /rollback have carried a GB-scale
`~/.hermes/checkpoints/store` since (one live install: 1.2 GB across 250
projects, mostly disposable worktrees and /tmp dirs), and the cap cannot
bring it down because every project keeps at least one snapshot.
Silently flipping the key back is indistinguishable from overriding a real
opt-in, so this surfaces it instead: `checkpoint_footprint_notice()` returns
one line when checkpoints are enabled AND the store is at or above
`max_total_size_mb`, naming the opt-out (`hermes config set
checkpoints.enabled false` + `hermes checkpoints clear`) and the
retention knob. `hermes update` prints it with the post-update notices;
`hermes doctor` reports it as a warning after the state.db check.
Squashed integration of the user-facing message audit for this surface set.
Full per-finding receipts: /tmp/ux-audit/lanes/*-receipt.md (campaign artifacts).
Dependency publication now recovers interrupted config/facts changes before
activation and leases live generations during collection. Receipts retain
update correlation and failed steps across nested command boundaries.
Doctor and desktop surfaces report those failures through shared owners.
Move checkout updates out of the desktop facade. Stage a detached Windows
relaunch waiter before shutdown, with bounded handshake and process-birth
checks. Keep packaged lifecycle tests isolated from the installed app.
Native verification exposed two production races: cron maintenance imported
the interactive CLI and rewrote TERMINAL_CWD, and install-ID reads collided
with first publication. Use the existing owners and locks. Plugin checks
now run at startup and each due-gated housekeeping tick, not after 60 ticks.
Share updater-test mutation boundaries and remove collection-root fixtures.
Separate cold MCP startup from command latency and give the real HTTP drip
test enough time to reach body handling.
Root npm check passed, including packaging. The fixed-tree Windows Python
run reported 44557 passed, one failed, and 1404 skipped, plus one retry-only
HTTP test. Those final failures now pass in a 35-test bounded batch. A real
isolated gateway wrote startup and periodic plugin-check receipts.
Full final-tree CI, bundled Sandbox deployment, and actual App Installer
relaunch remain unverified. docs/pm-audit-status.md records these limits.
Prepare dependency generations before selecting them. Keep shipped tool
bytes separate from writable additions, and store facts beside their entries.
Validate proposed plugin sets before config publication. Restore the previous
config if the facts write fails.
Consolidate duplicate updater, backup, setup, and voice helpers. Repair
launcher selection, dependency consumers, download ownership, update feeds,
and native Windows process and file handling.
Verification: 206 changed/prior-failing Python files reported 4630 passed,
one failed, and 330 skipped. Fix the remaining Hindsight fixture boundary.
The final targeted rerun reported 234 passed and two skipped. The store
review regression batch reported 83 passed and one skipped. Desktop
TypeScript checks, 56 selected Electron tests, 24 release tests, and the
removed-import/compatibility guards passed.
This is an integration checkpoint, not full audit acceptance. The complete
Python suite has not run on this fixed tree. Crash-atomic plugin publication,
generation cleanup, receipt correlation, and packaged lifecycle acceptance
remain open in docs/pm-audit-status.md.
hermes_cli/plugin_compat.py is now the single source of truth for the compat window:
COMPAT_REMOVAL_DATE = 2026-09-14; scan_plugin() statically finds `from F import n`, `import F` + `F.n`,
alias forms and string targets against compat_manifest.json; compat_report() aggregates over the user's
ENABLED external (non-bundled) plugins; disable_reason() decides the loader's skip.
Surfaces (all read from that one report):
* CLI: yellow block under the banner naming plugins + date + `hermes plugins compat` (red + DISABLED after)
* `hermes plugins compat [--json] [path]`: file:line, old -> new per hit; exit 1 while anything remains;
`path` lets a plugin author scan their own checkout
* `hermes doctor`: "Plugin import paths (removed Sep 14, 2026)" section next to the xAI retirement check
* `hermes update`: post-update notice alongside the FTS/curator notices
* Desktop: compat_report() writes HERMES_HOME/.plugin-compat-report.json (deleted when clean); Electron
shows ONE warning dialog per distinct report after the backend is up and persists the dismissal in
userData/plugin-compat-dismissed.json. A new affected plugin, or the date passing, is a new report.
From the date, PluginManager skips a hitting external plugin before importing it, with the reason in
LoadedPlugin.error ("uses N import path(s) removed on 2026-09-14; run `hermes plugins compat` ...") — the
same path a plugin with a broken register() takes, so nothing else is affected. Escape hatch:
plugins.allow_deprecated_imports: true (config_defaults), which only helps until the compat commit is
actually reverted.
Docs: COMPAT_MANIFEST.md (removal date, what-happens table, author instructions), plugin dev guide section.
Tests: tests/test_plugin_compat_notice.py (scanner forms, report scope, date gate + escape hatch, summary
text, report file lifecycle, loader skip via a real PluginManager), electron/plugin-compat-notice.test.ts
(show once, re-show on a different set or on the date passing, malformed file ignored).
Live A/B on this box with a demo plugin on old paths: before the date it loads and the banner/doctor/report
name it; with today=2026-09-14 it is skipped with the reason and the banner turns red; with the escape
hatch it loads again.
Every PLUGIN-COMPAT __getattr__ now calls hermes_cli.plugin_compat.warn_once(facade, name, target) before
resolving, emitting a HermesPluginCompatWarning (FutureWarning) once per process per name: old path, new
path, removal target. Importing a facade for its live API stays silent; only resolving a moved name warns.
COMPAT_MANIFEST.md documents the warning and how to silence it during migration.
Verified the runtime never routes through a pointer: every entry point (run_agent, cli, hermes_cli.main,
gateway.run, tui_gateway.server, web_server, model_tools + tool discovery, hermes_state, cron.scheduler,
browser_tool, mcp_tool, kanban, auth) imports clean and `hermes doctor` runs end to end with the warning
promoted to an error.
Also restores the check_compat_pointers CI step to .github/workflows/lint.yml, which a0be177aac dropped
when the compat layer was regenerated (the lint script itself was present; the workflow step was not).
hermes_cli/plugin_compat.py, tests/test_plugin_compat_warning.py and the two-line insert per facade are
part of the compat layer and go away with it.
Cherry-pick of 03b45db777 from ethie/bundles-local-models: TLS trust was
five hand-rolled ladders (agent/ssl_verify, hermes_cli/auth,
agent/model_metadata, hermes_cli/urllib_security, gateway/run's SSL_CERT_FILE
mutation) all ultimately pointing at certifi's frozen list. Trust now comes
from the platform verifier via truststore: CryptoAPI on Windows,
Security.framework on macOS, OpenSSL's store on Linux; install_truststore()
patches ssl.SSLContext process-wide. agent/ssl_verify.py is the one
authority; agent/ssl_guard.py deleted.
Also closes the session-flagged coverage gap: hermes_cli/main.py (CLI
entrypoint) and tui_gateway/entry.py now call install_truststore() so
subcommands/help that never construct an AIAgent still get OS-store trust.
The Sep 2026 decomposition (PR #102117) makes internal import paths a non-API: names now live in
the focused modules that define them. This commit is the ONLY thing keeping the old paths alive,
so external plugins have time to update. It is deliberately a single, unsquashed commit:

removes every shim, stub and manifest at once on the announced date. Nothing in-tree may depend on
these pointers: scripts/check_compat_pointers.py (wired into lint.yml) fails CI if it does.
What it adds (see COMPAT_MANIFEST.md, compat_manifest.json):
- 332 facade modules get one delimited `PLUGIN-COMPAT` block appended at the end of the file
- 1,172 moved names resolved lazily via a module `__getattr__` (PEP 562) — never a top-level import,
so no import cycles; facades that already had `__getattr__` get a chained one
- 592 third-party/stdlib names the old modules used to expose, with their original import statements
- 266 public definitions that had been deleted as unused, restored byte-for-byte from the pre-decomposition
tree (+40 private helpers and 16 imports pulled in only because a restored definition needs them)
- 3 deleted modules recreated as re-export stubs (gateway/startup_watchdog, hermes_cli/observability/
relay_runtime, tools/environments/modal_utils)
- private names (`_x`) get no pointer: they were never API (3,792 skipped)
Verified: all 335 touched modules import under a fresh HERMES_HOME and every manifest name resolves;
the lint reports zero in-tree uses; ruff clean; targeted suites unchanged.
test_doctor_pm_store_probe.py shipped (in 47f4ab3a17) testing a
helper that never existed — the tests were born failing and stayed
red since Aug 29 (found during tripwire verification; git grep
confirms _pm_tool_path appeared only in the test file at its birth
commit).
The contract the tests describe is real and useful: doctor probes
tools that pinned installs run out of the pm store, but nothing puts
the store on an interactive shell's PATH — a PATH-only probe reports
a healthy managed install as 'not found'. _pm_tool_path answers from
facts.json + the store: the recorded entry's binary when on disk,
None when unstaged or the recorded binary is gone (deleted = report
missing, never guess). Store lookup via pm.paths.store_root() —
sealed/custom HERMES_HOME layouts included.
The 3 previously-broken tests now pass; test_doctor.py's 32
pre-existing Windows-host failures are byte-identical before/after
(the backlog set, not this change).
The auto-update plan's doctor surface: a read-only 'Plugin Provenance'
section reporting provenance drift (warn + reinstall remedy),
self-cloned dirs (adopt hint), manual drops (info), and — the heart —
update_url saved-tag mismatches (warn naming trust-update-url /
check-updates as remedies). Zero issues = one healthy check_ok line.
Wrapped exception-safe like every doctor section; rides the shipped
plugins_provenance classifier + the same comparison check-updates
uses (logic live-verified against a constructed mismatch).
Follow-up to salvaged #100677: the file checks read the memory section via the
run's hermes_home while the Memory Provider section re-read config with no
argument (module-global HERMES_HOME). Resolve once and reuse so both sections
report against the same config.
Salvaged from #100677. Fixes#100668: hermes doctor reported MEMORY.md/USER.md
char counts even when memory.memory_enabled / memory.user_profile_enabled were
false. Resolve the flags via get_builtin_memory_store_flags (same resolver the
agent uses), only inspect enabled targets, and point at the Memory Provider
section when both are disabled.
Wire the desktop app onto the pm store for real distribution:
- MSIX bundle: electron-builder config, appx assets, manifest, copilot
key + deep-link routing, App Installer + Windows Store variant
(sign only the msix; inner binaries covered by the package block map)
- Rust CLI shim (apps/desktop/shim) — bundled builds run from the store
python + shim, never the venv; payload symlinks relativized so the
relocatable venv survives relocation
- Cloudflare R2 release pipeline: publish binaries + update feeds,
nightly channels/tags, stamp-first version resolution
- Update system: gate, uninstall steward, boot bootstrap, release
channels, update receipts
- install.ps1 reduced to a 361-line stage-protocol bootstrapper (heavy
deps are pm's job); darwin updater + update-channel mirror ripped
- doctor: main's re-landed TCC anchor kept, termux branches removed
Rebuilt from ethie/pm onto the pm-store stack. 22 hot files hand-merged;
uv.lock + package-lock.json keep main's newer dep tree; test_engines
reads the pm/lock.json pin; lazy_deps.py deleted (all 222 importers
migrated to pm in the foundation commit).
Introduce the pm store: a unified, hash-verified package store that
replaces lazy_deps and the old installer's ad-hoc tool downloads.
Store tools are provisioned on PATH (ffmpeg, node/npm via pinned uv),
with a resumable 8-way downloader, verify() returning failure reasons,
and adopt() made EPERM-safe. chromium ships in the payload for every
target. The 3600-line install.sh is replaced by a staged bootstrapper
(heavy deps are pm's job after this); setup-hermes.sh, Dockerfile and
nix pin tables are rewired onto the store. Old install-script tests,
lazy_deps/managed_uv/build_info, and the ps1/bash installer test
batteries are removed with the machinery they tested.
Rebuilt from ethie/pm onto upstream/main (ac6c8028e0) after the
utf-8-sig sweep. 16 hot files (main also churned them) hand-merged:
platform adapters, main.py, electron/main.ts, tui_gateway/server.py,
cua_backend, installer-tests workflow, install.sh (full rewrite),
setup-hermes.sh, plugins doc.
test_command_token_source: the key_cmd fixtures were POSIX shell
commands (printf/echo/date) run through _mint's shell=True — cmd.exe
on Windows, where none of those behave the same. New _pycmd() helper
base64-wraps a python -c payload so the command is pure printable
ASCII that both cmd.exe and POSIX sh run unchanged.
doctor: _gh_authenticated() crashed the whole doctor run with
WinError 5 when the PATH gh resolves to a Windows Store/MSIX
reparse-point shim (CreateProcess denies those outside the package
context). Treat an unspawnable gh as not-authenticated — a
diagnostic probe must never take down the run. The shared test
helper also stops doctor from probing the ambient gh at all (the
gh-specific behaviors have their own mocked tests).
- lightpanda_engine_status: check use_real_profile before the cloud
provider, matching browser_exec's actual resolution order (real-profile
resolution runs before backend resolution), so /browser status and
hermes doctor name the right shadowing setting when both are set.
- launch_lightpanda: drop the unreachable Windows popen_kwargs branch
(find_lightpanda_binary returns None on nt, launch errors out earlier).
- doctor: drop the over-defensive try/except around the cached
_using_lightpanda_engine() config read.
- Docstring: 'no-I/O gates' -> 'no network I/O (config reads only)'.
- New test pinning real-profile-over-cloud-provider reason precedence.
Browser Use mode never read browser.engine: _resolve_backend_cdp() went
BU_CDP_* env -> CDP override -> cloud provider -> local Chrome, so
`engine: lightpanda` was a silent no-op on the default backend, and on
the built-in path it was skipped whenever a cloud provider, Camofox or a
CDP override was active without anyone saying so.
- browser_use_cli: when the engine is lightpanda and nothing with higher
precedence claimed the session, get a session from _get_session_info()
and export its endpoint as BU_CDP_URL; the browser is private to the
session key, so the own-tab preamble is skipped. The browser_exec
description gains a Lightpanda header (text-first, new_tab once then
goto_url — lightpanda-io/browser#1962).
- browser_tool: _create_local_session() spawns `lightpanda serve
--host 127.0.0.1 --port <free>` per session key (new
tools/browser_lightpanda.py), reusing the session cache, inactivity
reaper and atexit cleanup; a dead process is respawned on the next call;
orphans from a crashed Hermes are reaped through per-process records in
$HERMES_HOME/cache/browser-use/lightpanda/. New lightpanda_engine_status()
reports whether the engine is in effect or what shadows it.
- tools_config: "Lightpanda" row in the Browser Automation picker
(cloud_provider: local + engine: lightpanda; "Local Browser" resets the
engine to auto) with a binary-check post-setup.
- /browser status and hermes doctor print the engine state and, when it
is shadowed, the reason.
The first landing (#95131/#95478, reverted in #95563) copied the
uv-store interpreter into venv/bin/python so TCC grants would stick
to a stable path. On real Macs that copy bricked every hermes command
two ways: dynamically-linked builds died in dyld because
@executable_path/../lib/libpython resolved into venv/lib/ (#95425),
and alias symlinks to the copy made CPython getpath lose the venv
prefix (#95541, ModuleNotFoundError: encodings).
Re-land:
- Keep the signed real-file copy of bin/python (identifier-pinned
via _macos_sign_managed_python).
- Materialize python3 / python3.N as real-file copies, never
symlinks. Copies boot on every build we could reproduce and keep
the TCC identity.
- Hardlink store libpython* into venv/lib/ when present (copy across
devices). Existing LC_RPATH already points there.
- Pre-install boot gate: launch the staged copy, demand encodings
plus the venv prefix, abort and leave the live venv untouched
on failure.
Doctor reports/installs the new anchor (the revert-era heal is
removed). Update refreshes it after a successful code swap. Tests
cover layout, idempotence, predecessor-symlink repair, libpython
hardlink, boot-gate refusal, and a macos_only real-interpreter E2E.
Closes#95596.
Reverts the interpreter-anchor halves of #95131 and #95478 (the anchor
module, its doctor check, and the update-time refresh). On real Macs the
anchored real-file copy of the uv interpreter dies in dyld: its LC_RPATH
(@executable_path/../lib) resolves into venv/lib/, which holds no
libpython — bricking EVERY hermes command including update and doctor
(#95425), and the re-pointed python3 aliases lost the stdlib
(ModuleNotFoundError: encodings, #95541). Linux CI could not catch this:
the fixture interpreters were one-byte fakes with no dynamic linking.
Kept: managed_uv._macos_sign_managed_python (#82529, @notkisk) — the
identifier-DR signing of repair generations is independent of the anchor
and unaffected by the dyld issue (it signs binaries IN PLACE in their
store, where their rpath is valid).
Added: doctor's check_macos_tcc_anchor_removed() heals venvs the anchor
already converted — restores bin/python to a symlink at the recorded
source (the anchor's own marker file) and re-points aliases; prints the
manual one-liner if the heal itself fails. Users whose CLI is fully
bricked can run the workaround from #95425 directly.
Re-land criteria: a dylib-complete anchor design (bundle libpython or
rewrite LC_RPATH), verified on macOS hardware BEFORE merge. Credit to
@kim-miram (#95358), @kokhlo (#95476), @zengzheqing (#95551) for the
forward-fix diagnoses that mapped the failure, and to the #95425/#95541
reporters.
The last piece of the macOS permissions campaign (#52010 follow-up): macOS
prompts per-folder (Desktop, then Downloads, then Documents, ...) as the
agent touches each one — a drip-feed of dialogs on first use. ONE Full Disk
Access grant covers all of them permanently, and with the stable signing
identities merged this week it survives every update. Nothing in Hermes
taught users that.
- hermes doctor: check_macos_full_disk_access() — prompt-free probe (the
FDA-gated TCC db dir returns EPERM without a dialog; TCC only prompts on
protected-CATEGORY paths), reports granted state or prints the one-switch
setup with the Privacy_AllFiles deep link.
- hermes setup: same probe at the end of onboarding — the moment users are
primed to do system setup — silent when already granted, indeterminate,
or non-macOS.
- docs: desktop.md TCC section now leads with the one-switch guidance.
- 7 tests (granted / denied / indeterminate / non-macOS, both surfaces).
Two follow-ups on top of the #86391 salvage:
- check_macos_tcc_grants: a certificate-anchored DR (hermes desktop
--setup-tcc-identity, or a notarized release) now reports as stable in its
own class instead of falling into the identifier-pinned message; the
identifier-pinned message points at --setup-tcc-identity for the strongest
anchor.
- collect_relay_plugin_cutover_findings: only merge process-level env vars
when env_map is None (run_doctor's live path). An explicit env_map is a
complete environment description — merging os.environ on top made
report_deprecated_config_and_env non-hermetic on boxes exporting legacy
relay vars (10 findings vs the expected 2 in
test_report_does_not_count_as_blocking_issue).
