The occurrence hint in _resolve_fingerprint (_local_index_hint, "the
occurrence the user clicked") came from the contributor's dedupe=False
mutate, which this salvage deliberately dropped: MemoryStore._mutate
collapses byte-identical entries and _apply goes back to the first match
with entries.index(text), so the hint could never pick an occurrence. Its
only live effect was a spurious "stale" refusal for a duplicated card
after an earlier entry was removed, although the text was still there.
Match by fingerprint -> first entry with that text, delete
_local_index_hint (and with it the second copy of the profile-index
formula), and read _memory_cards() only on the legacy index-id path, so
a fingerprinted id no longer re-reads and hashes both files for a hint.
Legacy ids still resolve by position.
The render lookup goes back to a single memory_node_id key: every
render_frames caller builds the graph fresh, and build_learning_graph
always sets the fingerprint. The desktop star-map keeps its dual key
(imported graphs). The memory_fingerprint docstring said a memory add
prepends; it appends; what shifts a card is an earlier entry removed.
Two places map a node id back to its memory card by rebuilding the bare
`memory:<source>:<index>` string: the timeline chart rows and the desktop
starmap's tooltip/body map. With the fingerprint in the id both missed
every card, so a memory row rendered an empty body.
Both now key the card under whichever shapes apply, so an imported or
pre-fingerprint graph keeps working. The CLI help and the memory doc now
describe the id as `journey list` prints it.

On Windows (fr-FR, es-AR, de-DE reports) the zone name arrives in the ANSI
code page but is decoded under a UTF-8 LC_CTYPE (UTF-8 mode, or Piper/espeak
flipping the process locale mid-run) with surrogateescape. datetime.strftime
splices tzname() in as UTF-8, so "%Z" raised UnicodeEncodeError while the
system prompt was being built and every new/compressed conversation died.
Rework safe_strftime into a small repair: output is untouched for valid text
(the system prompt stays byte-identical), surrogateescape'd bytes decode back
through the ANSI code page ("heure d'été"), anything else degrades to U+FFFD,
and a raising "%Z" is rendered from the repaired tzname(). hermes_time no
longer imports agent.* at module load.
Route the remaining locale-name sites through it: cron quota-hold notice,
auxiliary cooldown notice, cron session titles, session_search dates,
insights, learning graph and billing renew dates. Tests use real datetimes
with a surrogate zone name instead of stubbed strftime.

Review findings on #102117 (independent reviewer + itsflownium):
* hermes_cli.kanban_db.connect / connect_closing pointed at hermes_cli.projects_db (different DB, no
board= parameter). The compat generator ranked candidate homes by path proximity when a name is
defined in several modules. Now it requires shape compatibility with the BASE definition (same
literal for constants, superset of parameter names for defs) and prefers the facade's own
<stem>_* sibling. Same class fixed for tools.tts_tool.DEFAULT_XAI_BASE_URL (-> tts_tool_providers),
and 17 constants/defs that had been pointed at same-named strangers (Matrix MAX_MESSAGE_LENGTH ->
Signal's 8000, tts MAX_TEXT_LENGTH -> BlueBubbles', honcho/retaindb/supermemory *_SCHEMA -> another
plugin's schema, ...) are now restored from BASE verbatim instead.
* send_yuanbao_direct (restored-def): body called adapter._outbound.send_direct, which HEAD moved to
the sender; rewritten to adapter._outbound.sender.send_direct.
* COMPAT_MANIFEST.md states the scope explicitly: public top-level names only; private names and
test monkeypatch seams are not preserved.
* scripts/check_subprocess_stdin.py: _splat_carries_stdin looked 30 lines ahead in the file text
and was satisfied by an unrelated later stdin=; it now finds the splatted name's definition via AST
and requires stdin inside that expression/body.
Tests: tests/test_compat_manifest_targets.py (pointer identity vs the facade's sibling; kanban
connect(board=) opens a Kanban DB, not projects.db; both FAIL on the previous layer),
test_subprocess_stdin_guard gains the false-negative probe, and the MoA -Q quiet-output contract
tests are back (tests/agent/test_moa_quiet_reference_output.py) against build_moa_facade.
The Sep 2026 decomposition (PR #102117) makes internal import paths a non-API: names now live in
the focused modules that define them. This commit is the ONLY thing keeping the old paths alive,
so external plugins have time to update. It is deliberately a single, unsquashed commit:
git revert <this sha>
removes every shim, stub and manifest at once on the announced date. Nothing in-tree may depend on
these pointers: scripts/check_compat_pointers.py (wired into lint.yml) fails CI if it does.
What it adds (see COMPAT_MANIFEST.md, compat_manifest.json):
- 332 facade modules get one delimited `PLUGIN-COMPAT` block appended at the end of the file
- 1,172 moved names resolved lazily via a module `__getattr__` (PEP 562) — never a top-level import,
so no import cycles; facades that already had `__getattr__` get a chained one
- 592 third-party/stdlib names the old modules used to expose, with their original import statements
- 266 public definitions that had been deleted as unused, restored byte-for-byte from the pre-decomposition
tree (+40 private helpers and 16 imports pulled in only because a restored definition needs them)
- 3 deleted modules recreated as re-export stubs (gateway/startup_watchdog, hermes_cli/observability/
relay_runtime, tools/environments/modal_utils)
- private names (`_x`) get no pointer: they were never API (3,792 skipped)
Verified: all 335 touched modules import under a fresh HERMES_HOME and every manifest name resolves;
the lint reports zero in-tree uses; ruff clean; targeted suites unchanged.
format_date() at line 76 still used %-d, which raises ValueError on
Windows strftime. Same class as the axis-label site fixed by #56640;
use dt.day directly. Credit also to @x7peeps (#58480) who flagged both
sites.
`_period_label()` in `learning_graph_render.py` used `%-d %b`
strftime, which is a Linux-only format — the `%-` prefix for
zero-padding suppression doesn't exist on Windows `strftime`, causing
`ValueError: Invalid format string` on `hermes journey`.
Fix by using `dt.day` directly (an integer, no zero-padding by
default) combined with `strftime('%b')` for the month. This is
cross-platform and produces identical output.
Reproduced and tested on Windows 10 with Hermes v0.18.0.
Memories are the only drillable rows, so give them the primary "clickable"
ink and demote skills (dead-ends) to the muted complement — previously the
non-openable skills wore the link-looking primary color. Flipped in both
the TUI and CLI palettes for parity.
The renderer kept a braille canvas, char-field scene, star-glyph/orbital
helpers, and seed/links params from earlier visual iterations that the
final timeline bar chart never uses. Remove them (~190 lines), simplify
the empty-state placeholder, and refresh the module + RPC docstrings to
describe what actually ships.
Collapse the two-step slice list → detail page into one scrollable tree:
each timeline slice is a parent header with its skills + memories nested
under ├─/└─ branch chars, ordered oldest → newest (children now sorted
chronologically in the renderer). One cursor walks the whole tree; Enter
still opens a memory's body. Drops the separate detail mode.
Terminal rendition of the desktop Star Map / Memory Graph: learned skills
and memories on a timeline, shared by `hermes journey` and the TUI
`/journey` overlay via one size-aware Python renderer
(agent/learning_graph_render.py).
- TUI overlay mirrors /agents: static chart overview + selectable slice
list → slice detail → single skill/memory body, with the shared
inverse-row selection treatment and a pinned footer.
- Reuse primitives: extract OverlayScrollbar into its own module (now
shared with agentsOverlay), scroll the item body via ScrollBox, and
unify both lists through one table-driven ListRow.
- No animation/playback in the TUI — pure data; the renderer's reveal
scrubber stays available in the CLI (`--play`, `--reveal`).
