Port from earendil-works/pi#8337 (UTF-8 BOM normalization in text inputs):
sibling sites the merged #81967 BOM sweep missed. json.loads hard-fails on
a leading U+FEFF and every one of these loaders swallows the exception and
silently falls back to defaults — a user who edited mem0.json, honcho.json,
hindsight/config.json, or supermemory.json in Notepad lost their whole
config with no error, and Qwen CLI OAuth creds saved with a BOM raised
qwen_auth_read_failed.
- plugins/memory/{honcho,mem0,hindsight,supermemory}: 13 read sites -> utf-8-sig
- hermes_cli/auth.py: _read_qwen_cli_tokens -> utf-8-sig
- tests: BOM regression tests per loader (sabotage-proven) + plain-UTF-8 guard
Two review findings on the salvage stack:
- _write_turns' _quietly consolidation keyed failure on a None result,
implicitly assuming add_memory never legitimately returns None. A None-
returning stub (the most common mock idiom) would mark every successful
write failed and re-append the batch forever. Module-level _FAILED
sentinel: only a raised exception re-queues.
- _pending_turns had no bound: a persistently failing service accumulated
one entry per turn for the process lifetime (gateway runs never
re-initialize), and every retry re-sent the whole accumulated payload —
O(n^2) upload bytes, and a size-rejected batch could never shrink. Cap
the buffer (50 turns / 256 KiB, drop oldest, warn once per trim).
The per-turn capture rewrite removed the raw urllib /v4/conversations
ingest, but stale references survived outside the diff hunks:
- README "Behavior" still carried the "written once via the conversations
endpoint" paragraph contradicted by the new bullets right above it.
- website memory-providers (EN + zh-Hans) still listed full-session ingest,
session-end /v4/conversations ingest, and ingest in the base-url and
api_timeout rows — the PR had updated one line per file but missed the
rest of the section.
Now every surface describes per-turn documents.add capture with retry.
Two cleanups on the salvaged per-turn capture path (review of #109359):
- _write_turns hand-rolled the try/except/log that the file's own _quietly
helper already provides (same exception class, level, exc_info shape);
the deleted _ingest path used _quietly for the identical call. Consolidate:
add_memory always returns a dict, so a None result is the failure sentinel.
- _capture_custom_id's `or 'hermes'` never fires: _sanitize_tag already
returns _DEFAULT_CONTAINER_TAG on empty input, and the literal duplicated
the constant the helper owns. Verified behavior-preserving (tests green
with the fallback artificially restored).
sync_turn runs on the MemoryManager worker, but on_session_switch and
shutdown run on the caller thread, so two _write_turns() calls could
snapshot the same pending batch and each replace the whole list (duplicate
append or lost pending turn). A capture lock now covers the
snapshot/write/replace sequence; _write_turns() reads pending turns inside
the lock instead of taking a caller-built list.
Retries are at-least-once: the documents API appends on a shared custom_id
and does not dedupe by content, so a write it accepted but whose response
was lost is appended again. Stated in the docstring and README instead of
implied.
Addresses review on #109359.
A failed flush at on_session_switch() restored the pending buffer and
then cleared it on the next line, so an unavailable service at the switch
boundary still lost every pending turn. Pending turns now carry their own
session_id; _write_turns() batches per session, so a later retry (next
turn, session end, shutdown) writes old-session turns under the old
session's custom_id even after the switch.
Addresses review on #109359.
sync_turn now writes each completed turn through the SDK's documents.add,
keyed by custom_id "<session>_<date>_b<0-5>" so all turns of a session in
one 4-hour window append to a single document. This matches the capture
shape of the other Supermemory agent integrations and removes the raw
urllib POST to /v4/conversations, which the self-hosted server does not
implement (#101270).
Failed turn writes stay pending and are retried with the next turn, at
session end, on session switch, and at shutdown. Previously a failed
session-end ingest was logged once and the whole session was lost.
Inline base64 data URIs in captured text are replaced with "[image]" so
pasted screenshots no longer land in the document as megabytes of text.
Metadata stays type/session_id/timestamp plus the existing sm_source.
Six of eight memory providers spawned plain threading.Thread for prefetch/sync/
writer work. A plain thread starts with an EMPTY contextvars.Context, so under
multiplex profiles the worker resolved the DEFAULT profile's HERMES_HOME (and
fails closed on scoped secrets). honcho and hindsight had each noticed and
written their own copy_context() wrapper; core had a third in memory_manager.
One canonical pair now lives on the ABC module every provider already imports:
agent/memory_provider.py::ctx_bound / spawn_context_thread. memory_manager,
honcho, hindsight, mem0, retaindb, byterover, supermemory and openviking all use
it; the honcho and hindsight wrappers and memory_manager._ctx_bound are deleted.
Five "json.loads(path.read_text()) or {}" readers (mem0._read_mem0_json,
honcho client/oauth/cli _read_config, hindsight save_config/_load_config) fold
into utils.read_json_or_empty, the read half of every read-merge-atomic_json_write
sidecar store.
holographic.save_config was the only config.yaml writer in the tree that
bypassed hermes_cli.config.save_config: raw open("w") + yaml.dump with no config
lock, no managed-mode refusal, no atomic replace, and a swallowed exception. It
now calls save_config(..., merge_existing=True). Behavior change: a managed
install refuses the write (previously silently rewrote config.yaml); other
sections are deep-merged instead of round-tripped through a raw dump.
openviking._hermes_home_path guarded an impossible ImportError of
hermes_constants (the module already imports agent.*) with a ~/.hermes fallback
that is wrong on Windows and under profile overrides; it is replaced by
get_hermes_home() directly.
Tests: tests/plugins/memory/test_provider_threads_inherit_profile.py drives each
provider's real spawn path with a fake backend and asserts the thread sees the
spawner's HERMES_HOME override (sabotage: retaindb back on threading.Thread ->
red). tests/plugins/memory/test_holographic_save_config.py pins merge-with-
existing-sections and managed-mode refusal (sabotage: raw yaml.dump -> red).
Under gateway.multiplex_profiles, os.environ holds the DEFAULT profile's .env; a
secondary profile's values exist only in the per-turn secret scope. Every reader
below still read os.environ/os.getenv at call time, so a secondary profile's turn
silently used the default profile's value.
Credentials (F6): FIRECRAWL_API_KEY (read_file hosted OCR), OPENVIKING_API_KEY,
mem0-OSS OPENAI_API_KEY, MODAL_TOKEN_ID/SECRET and BROWSER_USE_API_KEY presence
gates, and the xAI video plugin's os.getenv("XAI_API_KEY") fallback AFTER the
scoped resolver had already missed — the exact fallback-after-miss shape
gateway/AGENTS.md forbids. Deleted, not re-scoped: the resolver is the scope.
Identity / tenant (F7): MEM0_USER_ID/AGENT_ID/HOST/MODE, SUPERMEMORY_CONTAINER_TAG,
RETAINDB_PROJECT, OPENVIKING_ACCOUNT/USER/AGENT (and the whole layered() env
read), HINDSIGHT_BANK_ID/MODE/retain shaping, HERMES_HONCHO_HOST. A raw read
put a secondary profile's memories into the default profile's account/bank/
project/tenant and recalled them back into the default's turns. Each now uses
get_secret with the provider's own per-profile default on a miss.
Endpoints (F8): OPENAI_BASE_URL (aux custom runtime + direct-alias expansion),
XAI_BASE_URL/HERMES_XAI_BASE_URL (aux OAuth), NOUS_INFERENCE_BASE_URL (#65941,
both the aux builder and hermes_cli.auth_nous._nous_inference_env_override),
GATEWAY_PROXY_URL (same UnscopedSecretError-only fallback shape as
GATEWAY_PROXY_KEY three lines below), FIRECRAWL_API_URL, BROWSERBASE_BASE_URL,
SUPERMEMORY/RETAINDB/HONCHO/HINDSIGHT URLs. The keys beside them were already
scoped, so a secondary's key was sent to the default profile's proxy or host.
Targets / display (F11): WEIXIN_HOME_CHANNEL (message posted into the default's
chat), HERMES_LANGUAGE, and agent/i18n's process-wide lru_cache of
display.language — now keyed by HERMES_HOME.
Outbound webhooks: hooks.outbound[].secret_env resolved from os.environ while
the gateway registers each profile's targets inside that profile's scope, so a
secondary's deliveries were signed with the default's secret or left unsigned.
Agent-cache eviction: _spawn_release_thread started a bare threading.Thread, so
commit_memory_session -> provider on_session_end ran with an EMPTY context. The
thread now runs copy_context() and, for the unscoped housekeeping sweep, enters
the owning profile's _profile_runtime_scope resolved from the session key
(agent:<profile>:...). The pressure batch does the same per key.
session_search (#82903): agent/inline_tool_executors.py::_session_search
forwarded every schema argument except `profile`, so a gateway agent could
never select a named profile's store. Forwarded; the ownership-scoping design
in #87779/#87847 is a separate design call and is not attempted here.
Live repro (/tmp/mux_audit/fix-tool-memory-reads/repro.py): 28 FAIL on
origin/main -> 0 FAIL with this change; 10 new invariant tests red on base.

Review findings on #102117 (independent reviewer + itsflownium):
* hermes_cli.kanban_db.connect / connect_closing pointed at hermes_cli.projects_db (different DB, no
board= parameter). The compat generator ranked candidate homes by path proximity when a name is
defined in several modules. Now it requires shape compatibility with the BASE definition (same
literal for constants, superset of parameter names for defs) and prefers the facade's own
<stem>_* sibling. Same class fixed for tools.tts_tool.DEFAULT_XAI_BASE_URL (-> tts_tool_providers),
and 17 constants/defs that had been pointed at same-named strangers (Matrix MAX_MESSAGE_LENGTH ->
Signal's 8000, tts MAX_TEXT_LENGTH -> BlueBubbles', honcho/retaindb/supermemory *_SCHEMA -> another
plugin's schema, ...) are now restored from BASE verbatim instead.
* send_yuanbao_direct (restored-def): body called adapter._outbound.send_direct, which HEAD moved to
the sender; rewritten to adapter._outbound.sender.send_direct.
* COMPAT_MANIFEST.md states the scope explicitly: public top-level names only; private names and
test monkeypatch seams are not preserved.
* scripts/check_subprocess_stdin.py: _splat_carries_stdin looked 30 lines ahead in the file text
and was satisfied by an unrelated later stdin=; it now finds the splatted name's definition via AST
and requires stdin inside that expression/body.
Tests: tests/test_compat_manifest_targets.py (pointer identity vs the facade's sibling; kanban
connect(board=) opens a Kanban DB, not projects.db; both FAIL on the previous layer),
test_subprocess_stdin_guard gains the false-negative probe, and the MoA -Q quiet-output contract
tests are back (tests/agent/test_moa_quiet_reference_output.py) against build_moa_facade.
The Sep 2026 decomposition (PR #102117) makes internal import paths a non-API: names now live in
the focused modules that define them. This commit is the ONLY thing keeping the old paths alive,
so external plugins have time to update. It is deliberately a single, unsquashed commit:
git revert <this sha>
removes every shim, stub and manifest at once on the announced date. Nothing in-tree may depend on
these pointers: scripts/check_compat_pointers.py (wired into lint.yml) fails CI if it does.
What it adds (see COMPAT_MANIFEST.md, compat_manifest.json):
- 332 facade modules get one delimited `PLUGIN-COMPAT` block appended at the end of the file
- 1,172 moved names resolved lazily via a module `__getattr__` (PEP 562) — never a top-level import,
so no import cycles; facades that already had `__getattr__` get a chained one
- 592 third-party/stdlib names the old modules used to expose, with their original import statements
- 266 public definitions that had been deleted as unused, restored byte-for-byte from the pre-decomposition
tree (+40 private helpers and 16 imports pulled in only because a restored definition needs them)
- 3 deleted modules recreated as re-export stubs (gateway/startup_watchdog, hermes_cli/observability/
relay_runtime, tools/environments/modal_utils)
- private names (`_x`) get no pointer: they were never API (3,792 skipped)
Verified: all 335 touched modules import under a fresh HERMES_HOME and every manifest name resolves;
the lint reports zero in-tree uses; ruff clean; targeted suites unchanged.
hermes_cli/memory_setup.py::_write_env_vars() wrote provider-controlled
.env entries with a direct Path.write_text() + post-hoc chmod, bypassing
the denylist/regex/CRLF-stripping/atomic-replace validation that
hermes_cli/config.py::save_env_value() already provides for every other
.env writer in the codebase. A malicious or buggy memory-provider plugin
declaring a crafted env-var name/value in its setup schema could inject
arbitrary lines into .env.
Routes memory-provider env writes through save_env_value(), and fixes a
regression this surfaced in plugins/memory/supermemory/__init__.py::
post_setup(), which called the old two-parameter _write_env_vars(env_path,
values) signature — restores the caller via context-local
hermes_constants.set_hermes_home_override()/reset_hermes_home_override()
instead of a removed env_path parameter, so explicit HERMES_HOME overrides
during setup still resolve correctly.
Adds test_env_file_created_with_secure_permissions, guarded on Windows
(POSIX mode bits aren't enforced there, mirroring the existing skip in
test_openviking_provider.py / test_supermemory_provider.py) since
save_env_value's atomic-replace path creates the temp file at 0o600 before
writing content, closing the TOCTOU window the old direct-write + chmod
implementation had.
Route HINDSIGHT_API_KEY/HINDSIGHT_LLM_API_KEY, HONCHO_API_KEY, SUPERMEMORY_API_KEY, MEM0_API_KEY and RETAINDB_API_KEY reads through agent.secret_scope.get_secret so multiplexed turns resolve the active profile's key instead of the process environment. Also guard supermemory post_setup's os.environ write on not is_multiplex_active() — writing one profile's key into the process-global env pollutes sibling profiles; the single-profile convenience path is unchanged.
The supermemory SDK already honors SUPERMEMORY_BASE_URL, but the raw
urllib call used for session-end conversation ingest hardcoded
https://api.supermemory.ai/v4/conversations, so ingest always hit the
cloud even when pointing at a self-hosted server (e.g.
http://localhost:6767).
Resolve the base URL as config (supermemory.json base_url) >
SUPERMEMORY_BASE_URL env var > https://api.supermemory.ai, strip any
trailing slash, and use it for both the SDK client and the
/v4/conversations ingest endpoint.
The supermemory and mem0 memory providers shipped third-party SDKs
(supermemory / mem0ai) that are not core dependencies, but — unlike the
honcho and hindsight providers — they imported those SDKs directly with
no tools.lazy_deps.ensure() preflight and had no LAZY_DEPS allowlist
entry. On the published Docker image the agent venv is sealed
(HERMES_DISABLE_LAZY_INSTALLS=1) and lazy installs are redirected to a
writable durable target (HERMES_LAZY_INSTALL_TARGET). honcho/hindsight
route through ensure() and install fine there; supermemory/mem0 never
called it, so their SDK was never installed on a hosted instance and the
provider silently reported itself unavailable even with the API key set.
Fixes:
- Add memory.supermemory + memory.mem0 to the LAZY_DEPS allowlist
(tools/lazy_deps.py), pinned to current PyPI releases.
- Call ensure('memory.<x>', prompt=False) at each SDK-import chokepoint
(_SupermemoryClient.__init__; Mem0MemoryProvider._create_backend),
mirroring honcho's wrapped try/except shape.
- Drop the SDK-import gate from supermemory's is_available() — it was a
chicken-and-egg trap (provider never loaded on a sealed venv, so
ensure() never ran). Now key-presence only, like honcho/mem0.
- Add matching pyproject extras [supermemory]/[mem0]; update the
lazy-covered-extras contract test (excluded from [all] by policy).
Tests prove each path fails without the fix and the real sealed-venv
durable-target gate accepts both features.
Add post_setup() and get_status_config() to the Supermemory memory
provider so `hermes memory setup` and `hermes memory status` print a
one-line connection summary (container, profile fact count,
auto_recall/auto_capture). Point API-key onboarding at the Hermes
connect URL (app.supermemory.ai/integrations?connect=hermes).
Salvage of #52988. Two fixes folded in:
- Test isolation: the new probe/status tests mocked _SupermemoryClient
but not the __import__("supermemory") guard inside
_probe_supermemory_connection, so they passed only where the optional
supermemory package was installed and failed on a clean checkout / CI
(the PR shipped with red CI). Added _stub_supermemory_importable()
mirroring the existing test_is_available_false_when_import_missing
pattern; the suite now passes with supermemory absent.
- post_setup: `if api_key and api_key not in os.environ` checked whether
the key's *value* named an env var (always false in practice). Fixed to
compare the value: `os.environ.get("SUPERMEMORY_API_KEY") != api_key`.
Verified: 38/38 in test_supermemory_provider.py and the full
tests/plugins/memory/ suite green with supermemory not installed.
Closes#52988
* refactor(supermemory): session-level conversation ingest + kebab tool aliases
Salvaged from #32487 (by @MaheshtheDev), rebased onto current main.
- sync_turn now buffers cleaned turns; the full session is ingested once
at session end / switch / shutdown via the conversations endpoint
- ingest_conversation() accepts and forwards functional document metadata
(type, session_id, message_count, partial)
- register kebab-case tool aliases (supermemory-save/search/forget/profile)
alongside the snake_case names
- README + docs (EN/zh-Hans) updated for the simplified session model
Source/vendor-attribution removed per project policy (no telemetry):
dropped x-sm-source header, sm_source metadata, and sm_capture_mode tags.
Preserved the post-branch atomic_json_write(mode=0o600) hardening that the
PR's stale base had reverted. Updated provider tests for the new behavior
and added maheshthedev@gmail.com to release.py AUTHOR_MAP.

* feat(supermemory): restore x-sm-source for Spaces routing
Reinstates x-sm-source: hermes (SDK default_headers + conversations POST)
and sm_source: hermes document metadata. Per @Dhravya (Supermemory), this
is a functional routing key, not telemetry: it groups Hermes writes into a
dedicated "Hermes" Space in the Supermemory app so users can filter and
bulk-manage memories per source agent.
sm_capture_mode remains dropped (appears analytics-only; Spaces are routed
by sm_source) pending confirmation. Adds README note + a unit test covering
_merge_metadata sm_source stamping and legacy source->type migration.

Self-hosted Honcho setup had four sharp edges:
- local/cloud URLs ending in /vN double-prefixed by the SDK (/v3/v3/... 404)
- authenticated local servers had no setup prompt for a JWT/bearer token
- profile-derived host keys could be dot-containing workspace IDs Honcho rejects
- memory-provider config files with API keys written world-readable per umask
This keeps existing behavior but makes those paths safer:
- strip a trailing /vN version segment from any configured baseUrl before SDK
init (the SDK's route builders always prepend their own version prefix);
auth-skipping stays loopback-only
- add an optional local JWT/bearer prompt in honcho setup, stored under
hosts.<host>.apiKey
- derive new profile host keys with underscores, still reading legacy
hermes.<profile> blocks
- write memory-provider config files atomically with 0600 via a shared
utils.atomic_json_write(mode=) arg (honcho/hindsight/mem0/supermemory)
- skip honcho.json parsing in gateway cache-busting unless Honcho is the active
memory provider; memoize by honcho.json mtime when active
- bust the gateway agent cache on memory.provider change
- add a hermes memory setup <provider> one-liner so fresh installs can configure
a named provider without the picker (the per-provider hermes <provider>
subcommand only registers once that provider is active)

Six days after #23937 (608 fixes) the codebase had accumulated 241 new
PLR6201 violations. Same mechanical `x in (...)` → `x in {...}` fix,
same zero-risk profile: set lookup is O(1) vs O(n) for tuple and the
two are semantically equivalent for hashable scalar membership tests.
All 241 instances fixed via `ruff check --select PLR6201 --fix
--unsafe-fixes`, zero remaining. Every changed value is a hashable
scalar (str/int/None/enum/signal); no risk of unhashable runtime
errors. No behavior change.
Test plan:
- 119 files changed, +244/-244 (net zero) — exactly one-line edits
- `ruff check` clean afterward
- Compile checks pass on the largest touched files (cli.py, run_agent.py,
gateway/run.py, gateway/platforms/discord.py, model_tools.py)
- Subset broad test run on tests/gateway/ tests/hermes_cli/ tests/agent/
tests/tools/: 18187 passed, 59 pre-existing failures (verified against
origin/main with the same shape — identical failure count, identical
category — all xdist test-order flakes unrelated to this change)
Follows the same template as PR #23937 ([tracker: #23972](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/issues/23972)).
Based on PR #5413 spec by MaheshtheDev (Mahesh Sanikommu).
Changes:
- Add search_mode config (hybrid/memories/documents) passed to SDK
- Add {identity} template support in container_tag for profile-scoped containers
- Add SUPERMEMORY_CONTAINER_TAG env var override (priority over config)
- Add multi-container mode: enable_custom_container_tags, custom_containers,
custom_container_instructions in supermemory.json
- Dynamic tool schemas when multi-container enabled (optional container_tag param)
- Whitelist validation for custom container tags in tool calls
- Simplify get_config_schema() to only prompt for API key during setup
- Defer container_tag sanitization to initialize() (after template resolution)
- Add custom_id support to documents.add calls
- Update README with multi-container docs, search_mode, identity template,
support links (Discord, email)
- Update memory-providers.md with new features and multi-container example
- Update memory-provider-plugin.md with minimal vs full schema guidance
- Add 12 new tests covering identity template, search_mode, multi-container,
config schema, and env var override
