Reverts all seven commits of #119381 (59c54c78..476ff4dd), which
re-landed the native card-based Skills/Plugins catalog browser after it
was reverted twice (#113037 reverting #112669, #115787 reverting
#113128). Capabilities -> Skills and Plugins return to the list/detail
tabs with the embedded catalog picker they had before #119381.
Removed with it:
- Desktop catalog/ module (browser, cards, detail dialog, filters,
reels/masonry, install switch) and skill deep-link install
(hermes://skill/install); skills/embedded-hub-picker.tsx comes back.
- apps/shared catalog-browse.ts and catalog-install.ts.
- The `catalog` i18n namespace in every locale (+ regenerated
locales/_keys.desktop.json); the two i18n pack tests and the keys
test now exercise connectorsPage.searchPlaceholder instead.
- Website /skills "Open in Hermes Desktop" skill links and the
extract-skills install identifiers; docs return to the pre-#119381 text.
- Later fixes that only patched the reverted catalog code go with it:
5832a6eb93 + 7aba2cbbe9 (catalog download deadline),
9e63cdc4b8 (catalog lookalike rows), c756986db2 (catalog counts),
the catalog half of c13232e90c / f265273347.
Kept on purpose (later work that depends on code #119381 introduced):
- DialogContent `chrome` / `overlayClassName` / nested-dialog layering
(the image lightbox uses them).
- vitest.setup.ts / src/test/jsdom.ts stubs (other suites rely on them).
- Kanban toolset wiring on the Plugins Desktop switch (cd30fdadf6,
7ca2f5665f) and its tests, the `hermes_not_connected` server tone,
the SearchField flex-1 fix, skill provenance helpers. SkillDetail shows
a provenance pill only for agent/hub skills, since the pre-#119381
labels have no `external` entry.
Submitters only saw a stale 5-point summary on the catalog page (it even listed
a 'Released' requirement nothing enforces), while reviewers applied ten README
rules plus criteria written nowhere public (credentials, approvals, disclosure,
compatibility metadata, forks of bundled plugins).
- plugin-catalog/README.md: rules 11-15 write down those review criteria; the
rule list sits between admission-rules markers.
- New developer-guide page 'Submitting to the plugin catalog': before you
submit, the PR flow, the full rule block (verbatim mirror), pin updates,
delisting vs removal, asking for a hook.
- The /plugins 'Submit' links and the user-guide section point at it.
- tests/website/test_catalog_rules_mirror.py fails when the two rule blocks
differ; classify_changes makes a README-only edit run it.
- AGENTS.md, plugins/AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md reference both files.
Catalog policy (Teknium): a listed plugin extends Hermes only through public
surfaces. A plugin that replaces core functions, methods or Desktop UI in place
collides with every other plugin patching the same seam and breaks on any core
release.
- New `no core override` admission check (hermes_cli/plugin_validate_core_override.py):
static taint pass over the import closure of __init__.py and dashboard/*.py.
Core values are Hermes modules (plus hermes_plugins.*) and attribute chains off
them, reached by import, importlib/sys.modules lookups, getattr, iteration, or a
plugin helper that returns one. Rebinds are attribute assignment/deletion,
setattr/delattr, sys.modules writes, writes into a core module's tables,
mock.patch, and passing a core value to a helper that setattr's its parameter.
Tests, benchmarks and CI/smoke scripts outside the import closure are not judged.
- Desktop lint: new `app DOM reach` rule (document-level queries of the app's own
data-slot/data-tour/data-sidebar/data-testid markup, and document.body
childList/subtree MutationObservers).
- Desktop lint bug: the comment stripper did not skip string literals, so a string
holding `/*` (a glob like '**/*.md') opened a fake comment and hid every line up
to the next `*/` from all rules. Strings are now matched first and kept.
- README rule 9, the plugin-catalog user guide and the plugin developer guide's
compatibility contract state the rule.
A/B over 466 pinned trees (121 open catalog PR entries + 349 listed entries +
humalike): the new checks flag exactly the hand-verified overrides; zero crashes;
no previously reported Desktop finding disappears.
The pinned-source job joined a PR-controlled subdir onto the clone root
with no validation, accepted file:// repos and ref names as the "pin",
and followed committed symlinks out of the clone, so the gate could
validate attacker-planted files instead of the declared commit's
contents. Harden the step end to end:
- validate repo (https://, whitespace-free), sha (40-hex, commit object),
and subdir (plain relative path) in the parser before any use
- run the parser under python3 -I against installed ruamel.yaml so the
PR checkout cannot shadow its imports, capture parser output, and
reset shell variables per entry so a dead parser cannot replay the
previous entry's fields
- confine PLUGIN_DIR and every symlink beneath it to the clone root
- include renamed and typechanged entry files in the changed set
- feed entries over fd 3 and keep plugin-executed commands off stdin so
validate cannot drain the remaining list
- NUL-delimit both self-updater grep stages and sanitize the echoed
filename list so crafted names cannot forge workflow commands
- mirror the same repo/subdir rules in the runtime catalog loader and
the site extractor, and use \Z anchors so a trailing newline cannot
split the verdict between gates
The catalog guide said every symlink among untracked files stops the update.
Since guard-excluded dirs (.venv/, venv/, node_modules/, tool caches) are now
pruned from the carry, links inside them never stop an update and those dirs
are rebuilt rather than copied. State that exception next to the symlink rule
(the _carry_user_files docstring was updated with the code change).
cff26600d2 stopped following symlinks when carrying untracked/ignored
files into a staged catalog update: a link planted after the installer's
scan could point outside the plugin root, past the guard. But it did so
by skipping them silently. Base followed the link and kept the content,
so a user whose ignored config.yaml is a link into their dotfiles now
loses that config on repin with no warning. _carry_user_files promises
to fail before publication rather than drop user state.
In a git checkout, symlinked files or dirs in the ??/!! set now fail the
update before publication, and the error names every such path. Links
are still never followed. Links under node_modules/ are .bin shims that
a reinstall recreates, so they stay skipped rather than blocking every
JS plugin's update. The no-git branch is unchanged: there, links may be
upstream's own.
The existing ignored-data-dir git test gains the case: the update
refuses, names data/link.yaml, and the live plugin keeps its revision,
its link and its data. This also gives the no-follow rule a test that
fails if the link is followed.
A subdirectory install has no .git, so the carry cannot tell removed
upstream code from user files and relies on a deny-list. That list missed
the dashboard surface (web_server_dashboard loads dashboard/manifest.json)
and .mjs/.cjs/.jsx/.tsx, so an upstream that dropped its dashboard or a
hook script got the old files back.
Add dashboard/ to _NO_GIT_REVISION_DIRS and the four extensions as a
carry-local set. They stay out of tools.plugin_guard.CODE_FILE_EXTENSIONS
on purpose: that set exempts code files from env-secret scan patterns, so
widening it there would weaken scanning rather than broaden it.
The docs now list what is actually enforced, and the existing subdir
update test pins dashboard/manifest.json + hooks/run.cjs removed upstream
are not resurrected.
Review finding (MAJOR-1): masking the first argument of every new RegExp(...)
also hid `el.innerHTML = new RegExp("<script src=x></script>").source`, a real
injection through .source — desktop_surface_findings returned 0 findings for
that line. The literal is now masked only when the constructor is the argument
of .replace/.replaceAll/.split/.match/.matchAll/.search or the receiver of
.test/.exec; every other use (.source, .toString(), template interpolation) is
a string-builder and keeps firing. The existing test gains the .source line
(must flag) and a .test() line (must not).
The listener receives the GatewayEvent (destructure payload), names are
dotted, delivery is per process (hermes serve = every Desktop window), and
the exact rss-reader switch away from the jsonl queue + 3 s poll. One line
in the catalog trust model on the lint's regex/RegExp allowance.
The onboarding card needs to list catalog plugins beside the hosted
connectors (NS-960 D1, D4) and grey a plugin whose app is absent (D5).
The catalog had no curated flag, and the manage_catalog row left
app_state empty.
- `onboarding: true` and `title` on catalog entries (loader, validator,
docs); set on blender, nvidia-app and nvidia-broadcast.
- hermes_cli/plugin_catalog_presence.py reads the plugin.json at the
catalog's pinned commit once per pin and judges its app declaration with
the hermes_platform resolver the installer and the Plugins-tab pill use.
No declaration or an unreadable one is `unknown`, never `present`.
- `plugins.manage action=onboarding` lists the curated entries this OS
runs (platform mismatch is the only exclusion) with app_state and the
sentence the card greys the row with.
- manage_catalog plugin rows now carry app_state and the catalog title.
- A live entry that differs from the in-tree entry at the same pin (new
metadata) now follows the same newer-catalog rule as a new pin, so a
checkout that adds `onboarding` is not masked by a published doc that
predates it.
The setup profile's `setup` toolset was empty. It now carries one tool, manage_catalog:
- search: catalog plugins (the Plugins tab's live catalog resolver) and hub skills, with
whether each is already installed in the default profile. Read-only.
- install: opens the same connection operation manage_connections opens, with rows of kind
plugin / skill. Nothing installs until the user approves a row. An approved row installs
into `default` (or the profile the Advanced modal named) through dashboard_install_plugin /
the hub's headless install, so the catalog pin, kill list, security scan and live
activation (#119644) are the host's. The row settles with the live MCP tool names and the
plugin's skill.
The model sends catalog ids and an action only; every other key is refused before anything
runs. An unknown id or a plugin this OS cannot run is drawn failed with the installer's own
text. Anywhere a catalog card cannot be drawn (TUI, CLI, messaging, registry dispatch) the
result is the `hermes plugins install` / `hermes skills install` pointer.
- contract: plugin/skill targets follow the MCP transitions.
- run.apply_answer / reissue route a card answer to the module that owns the operation.
- tool_search: `setup` joins the direct-surface toolsets, so the guide's one tool is never
deferred behind tool_search.
- docs: tools reference, toolsets reference, plugin catalog page.
Linear NS-964.
The cached live catalog (`HERMES_HOME/cache/plugin-catalog.json`) won over the
in-tree copy unconditionally: right after `hermes update` bumped an in-tree pin
a fresh (<6 h) cache still installed the previous sha, and offline a cache of
ANY age (90 days in the audit probe) outranked the checkout's catalog.
- For an entry both sources carry at different pins the NEWER catalog wins:
the checkout's last `plugin-catalog/` commit time vs the doc's
`generated_at`; when neither resolves (release install, no timestamp) the
entries' `version` labels break the tie, else live wins as before.
- A cache older than LIVE_CATALOG_MAX_STALE_SECONDS (24 h) stops supplying
pins (in-tree takes over) but its removals still count — a kill-list entry
never expires.
- The cache is written via temp file + rename: a concurrent reader (gateway,
TUI, a second CLI) can no longer see a half-written document, which read as
a fetch failure and started a 60 s failure window in that process.
Catalog audit findings F7 and F11 (low severity, no issue filed).
Catalog trust bugs from the 2026-09-21 plugin audit (lane 3, F1-F6, F9):
- F1 (high): a URL-installed repo shipping its own .hermes-catalog.json rendered
as catalog:official everywhere and marked the real entry "installed". Provenance
now lives on the installer-owned .install-metadata.json record (catalog block
written by _install_plugin_core, sha = checked-out commit); read_catalog_sidecar
never reads the tree. Pre-fix installs are adopted once when the installer
record agrees (pinned at the sidecar sha, cloned from the entry's repo).
- F2: removed.yaml bypassed by git@/ssh:///http:///www. spellings. _normalize_repo
canonicalises to host/owner/repo (scheme, user, www., .git, slashes dropped).
- F6: removed.yaml consulted for INSTALLED plugins too: git-pull update, enable and
gate_manifest (load) refuse recalled plugins, offline (in-tree + cached live
list). --allow-removed is recorded on the install record and exempts it.
- F5: install NAME --ref X recorded the catalog pin, so list/TUI/update claimed
the reviewed pin while HEAD differed. Recorded sha is the checked-out one.
- F3: re-pin replaced the whole tree, losing the installer-created config.yaml,
data and user patches with no warning. Untracked/ignored files are carried
into the new tree; edits to tracked files are copied to
<HERMES_HOME>/plugins-backup/<name>-<sha8>/ with a warning.
- F4: a manifest rename between pins left the OLD dir installed and enabled.
The stale dir is removed and the enabled flag follows the new name.
- F9: dashboard payload `removed` list now includes live removals.
repin_catalog_plugin returns RepinResult(sha, changed, installed_name, warnings);
CLI, dashboard and TUI callers surface the warnings and the new name.
The catalog page claimed admission's lint means a marketplace install 'cannot quietly rewire the app'; the lint is a handful of regexes and plugin.js runs in the app realm with the full window.hermesDesktop bridge. The user guide, catalog trust model and SDK security section now describe the real model: human review of a pinned SHA plus two tripwires (lint + loader import allowlist), no isolation.
main extracted the launchd backend and the setup wizard out of hermes_cli/gateway.py. The
eight launchd functions pm-clean had changed are ported into gateway_launchd.py in its
_gw() style: runtime_command/installation_command for the gateway argv (no VIRTUAL_ENV in
the plist, XML-escaped args), _prepare_service_launcher before every plist write,
utf-8-sig plist reads, and launchd_restart's refresh-first + bounded bootstrap revival.
The systemd service-unit cluster stays in the facade (no gateway_service_unit sibling).
backup.py takes main's browser_profiles backup-only exclusion on our profile_root_entry
shape. main.ts takes main's attach-first backend block with our explicit types.
The README section was gated on `readme: true` in the catalog YAML and no entry set it, so
all 222 plugin pages shipped without one. READMEs now render for every GitHub/GitLab entry
(fetched at the reviewed sha, subdir first then repo root, common casings and docs/README.md
as fallbacks); `readme: false` opts an entry out. Build proof: 222/222 READMEs rendered.
Branch semantics kept where main and PM disagree: update_cmd_deps.py,
constraints-termux.txt, the Electron update-api-check module and the
post-swap hand-off test stay deleted; the pending-fleet-restart catch-up
and the local_runtime tag/download ladder stay retired (PM owns engines).
Ported from main onto the branch's shape: profile_scoped_chore for the
auto-archive and plugin-update housekeeping chores, the local-runtime
cross-process boot lock and residency cap, the checkpoint tmp_pack sweep,
the cua daemon-liveness status probe, the remote-served Desktop update
flag (posix.sh / windows.ps1), sign-in for env-pinned remote gateways
(urlDisabled on RemoteSetupFields), the uvloop extra split (uvicorn
without [standard]), and the umask-scoping spawn test.
uv.lock regenerated with pm.build_env --lock-only; new utf-8 reads from
main switched to utf-8-sig (check-windows-footguns).
/docs/plugins/<name> and /docs/plugins/by/<maintainer> are generated at
build time by a small Docusaurus plugin (website/plugins/plugin-catalog-pages)
from the same plugins.json the grid fetches, so a merged catalog PR is the
only way a page appears or changes.
Plugin page: full description with the Disclosure sentence pulled into a
callout, pinned commit / version / platforms / requires facts, tools, hooks
and env chips, Desktop install button + CLI command, repository and reviewed
source links, optional screenshots gallery, optional README rendered from the
PINNED commit (fetched at build, allowlisted HTML, raw HTML dropped, relative
links and images resolved against the pinned tree), and a "More by this
author" shelf. Author page: everything a maintainer has in the catalog with
total stars and a profile link when all repos share one owner.
Cards on the grid link through: the title is a link and a card click opens
the page (the Desktop picker embed keeps expanding in place). The shared
vocabulary (entry type, tier/category taxonomy, link builders) moved to
src/components/PluginCatalog/catalog.ts so the three surfaces cannot drift.
Docs: field table and catalog README describe screenshots:/readme: and the
pages.
Resolved toward the branch: PM provisions uv/python (main's install.ps1 uv-shim
salvage + its test and workflow steps dropped), the shim re-exec stays retired,
package.json carries no electron-builder block (afterExtract identity stamp wired
into electron-builder.config.cjs instead; after-pack.mjs keeps signing only),
Desktop workspace-deps helpers stay retired. Main's scratch-dir bootstrap
(export_scratch_tmp_env) is taken and re-run after profile resolution.
Conflicts resolved toward the branch: PM owns dependency preparation, the
Windows shim re-exec/hand-off path stays retired (main's shim-parent wait,
gateway-resume env token and update_cmd_deps tests dropped), docs describe
the PM update flow. The docker workflow parks install-stamp.json around the
toolchain step instead of deleting it so tests/docker can compare provenance.
A desktop/plugin.js is evaluated in the Electron renderer with the app's
full authority; the runtime loader documents itself as error isolation
only and says a remote source must not reuse it without a boundary. The
catalog is that remote source, so admission now fails a plugin whose
desktop code patches prototypes, uses eval/new Function, dynamically
imports anything but the SDK (app chunks, blob/http URLs), or injects
script tags. Against the 18 desktop plugins in the current sweep the lint
passes 17 and fails the one the security review flagged for exactly these
moves. Policy written down in plugin-catalog/README.md rule 8 and the
user-facing catalog doc.
The hero opened with "Reviewed, SHA-pinned plugins... or copy the CLI
command", a red "0 REMOVED" counter and "ranked by GitHub stars" fine
print: a registry dashboard, not a store front. Now: a benefit-first
tagline, a one-line meta ("138 plugins across 9 categories, updated N
ago"), three trust chips (reviewed / installs the reviewed version /
one click from Desktop) in place of the tier counters, a plain-language
search placeholder with the "/" hint moved to a tooltip, a light search
field in light mode, and a readable eyebrow on white.
Mechanical `check_doc_links.py --fix` pass over website/docs (hand-authored
and generated pages) and the zh-Hans mirror: 1,868 route-style links
(`](/section/page#anchor)`, `](/docs/...)`) become `](../section/page.md#anchor)`.
Every target was asserted to exist on disk; anchors and query strings are
preserved; fenced code blocks and inline-code examples are untouched.
Two dead targets found by the converter were fixed by hand first:
memory-providers.md linked `/user-guide/plugins` (page is
`user-guide/features/plugins`), and the zh-Hans learning-path still linked the
removed `rl-training` page — ported the EN treatment (external Atropos link).
Docusaurus build after: EN locale 0 unresolved Markdown links, 0 broken links,
0 broken anchors.
Follow-up to the salvaged #113687 / #113682 commits:
- `removed_annotation(name, dir_path, removed_entries=None)` resolves the kill list once itself
when no list is passed and matches against it; the `removed_annotation_batch()` wrapper and its
name-keyed dict are gone (a hub row keyed by `name` could shadow a same-named nested plugin).
Both surfaces (`plugins list`, `_merged_plugins_hub`) call `resolved_removed_entries()` once
and pass the list per row.
- The negative cache is one module float deadline instead of a URL-keyed dict plus two helpers;
the duplicated stale-cache read is one `_stale_live_cache()`.
- Tests trimmed to two invariants: failure memory honours the TTL and still serves a stale copy;
hub rebuild + `plugins list` each cost one network attempt and still annotate an in-tree removal.
The #113682 route test's fake gains the new third argument.
- Docs: the live-refresh section says a failed fetch is remembered for a minute.
Reconcile plugin declarations and validation through PM's atomic generation publication; preserve external runtimes, target markers, and conflict refusal. Keep one source-update completion owner and port upstream lifecycle changes to the PM desktop/runtime paths.
Symptom: a third of catalog entries (23 of 71 pinned trees scanned today) could not be
installed from the Desktop. The install path runs plugin_guard on every clone and a
caution verdict needs a confirmation; the CLI prompts, the Desktop/dashboard path
passes no decision callback, so caution became "Security scan blocked".
Root cause: admission (hermes plugins validate + catalog CI) never ran the scanner, so a
pin could be approved by a human and still trip the installer.
Fix, both halves:
- validate_plugin_dir gains a "security scan" check: dangerous fails the entry, caution
is reported as warnings so the reviewer reads the findings before merging the pin.
pinned-source-validate in plugin-catalog-ci.yml therefore runs the identical scanner.
- _install_plugin_core accepts reviewed_pin=<catalog sha>; when the checked-out revision
equals it, caution is accepted without a prompt. dangerous still blocks (a signature
added after review is what the backstop is for). Raw-URL installs, --ref overrides
and a checkout at any other revision keep the current behaviour.
Live: dashboard_install_plugin('weather') on origin/main -> BLOCKED caution; after -> ok.
repo social banners are 2:1, so that shape fills the slot without a crop;
the recommended size is in the README/docs. Desktop AgentPluginRow gains
catalog_version to match the generated contract.
The 40-hex sha stays the release, but nobody reads one. Entries may now add
`version: "1.4.0"` (free-form, <=32 chars, never parsed) and `image:` (an https
URL on raw.githubusercontent.com / github.com / *.githubusercontent.com).
Why GitHub-only: the Desktop catalog browser deliberately never fetches from
third-party hosts, and a raw URL pinned to the entry commit is as immutable as
the sha it decorates.
Readers updated together: PluginCatalogEntry + entry_from_mapping (drop with a
warning, entry survives), validate_plugin_catalog.py (admission error), the
site extractor (drop, never fatal), the /docs/plugins card (banner + version
pill + "1.4.0 @ abcd1234" pin), the CLI table/info (pin_label), the TUI-gateway
plugin row (catalog_version -> Desktop "Update to 1.4.0"), and the Desktop
catalog detail header (image).
Teknium ruled that maintainers may add batches of community plugins from a
reviewed sweep instead of waiting for each owner to submit. Rule 5 and the
user-guide checklist now say so, and give authors the explicit right to adjust
or remove a swept-in entry via their own PR.
Teknium's call: most community submissions are Desktop panes, so an entry
without a category lands on the Desktop shelf; "other" becomes "general" for
plugins that genuinely span areas. Shelf order puts Desktop first. The six
entries merged today (pets-all, newswire, auto-titler, live-voice,
metamask-wallet, web-octen) get explicit categories.
The catalog page was one undifferentiated grid filtered only by tier, so a
memory provider sat between two Desktop panes. Entries now carry an optional
``category`` (memory | desktop | platform | web | tools | voice | automation |
models | other, default other) that the loader, the admission validator and
the site extractor all understand.
/docs/plugins renders one shelf per category in browse mode, a category pill
row under the tier pills, a clickable category chip on every card, and a
results bar (active category, count, clear) when a filter or search flattens
the view. ``hermes plugins catalog`` gains a Category column and groups by it.
All 18 shipped entries are categorised. Unknown categories fail admission
(same contract as tier) so a typo cannot create a phantom shelf.
Teknium's ruling: catalog plugins do not need the 2-week maturity window,
but they may not ship an in-app updater that downloads and replaces their
own files, because that makes the reviewed SHA pin decorative. Rule 3 in
the README and item 5 on the docs page now say so, and plugin-catalog-ci
fails an entry whose catalog build both fetches from GitHub releases/raw
and writes or renames plugin files (either half alone is allowed).
