pm imported runtime_state's private helpers (_lock, _atomic_bytes, _bytes,
_digest) at a dozen sites while runtime_state imports pm.environments at
module top. The primitives are pm's: move them into the stdlib-only
pm.filesystem as lock_fd, durable_write_bytes, read_bytes_or_none and
file_digest, and repoint every pm caller.
runtime_state keeps the private names only as import aliases: it still
calls them through its own globals, and pre-PM updaters load them by these
names mid-swap (tests/compat/old_updater_surface.json).
Boot-subset test fixtures now copy pm/filesystem.py, since runtime_state
imports it at process boot; worker-injection tests patch the name
pm.publication now reads.
A plugin that lives in a monorepo subdirectory (the Hindsight catalog entry:
vectorize-io/hindsight#hindsight-integrations/hermes) was cloned with every
file in the repository even at --depth 1: 170 MB for a 2 MB plugin folder.
On a slow link that exceeds any reasonable deadline, so `hermes update`'s
Hindsight migration failed with "Git clone timed out" every time.
Subdirectory installs now do a blobless clone (--filter=blob:none
--no-checkout) and a sparse checkout of just that folder, written as the
classic info/sparse-checkout file so older Git clients work too. Servers
without partial-clone support ignore the filter and fall back to the old
download.
Because a partial clone downloads file contents at checkout time, the
checkout step (pinned and unpinned) now gets the configured network
deadline and the credential fallback, same as clone and fetch. Every
timeout error names plugins.clone_timeout_seconds so users can find the
knob.
Existing test fakes of _clone_plugin_repo accept the new subdir argument.
Change-detectors, tautologies, source-reading tests, redundant duplicates,
mock-echo tests and dead/unrunnable tests. Per-test rationale in the lane
ledger (category + reason for every removal).
The saved update_url is what the gateway urlopen()s unattended every
check interval, and the feed decides which origin commit an update
selects. Install copied it into the row inside a try/except-pass with
no scheme check, so http:// (MITM to an old vulnerable commit),
file:// and ftp:// feeds were accepted.
One predicate (plugins_updates.https_update_url) is applied at install
(a refusal before any state exists — the manifest was already read, so
the re-read/except-pass is gone), in trust-update-url, and at
default_fetch itself so rows saved before this rule are refused too.
Branch semantics kept where main and PM disagree: update_cmd_deps.py,
constraints-termux.txt, the Electron update-api-check module and the
post-swap hand-off test stay deleted; the pending-fleet-restart catch-up
and the local_runtime tag/download ladder stay retired (PM owns engines).
Ported from main onto the branch's shape: profile_scoped_chore for the
auto-archive and plugin-update housekeeping chores, the local-runtime
cross-process boot lock and residency cap, the checkpoint tmp_pack sweep,
the cua daemon-liveness status probe, the remote-served Desktop update
flag (posix.sh / windows.ps1), sign-in for env-pinned remote gateways
(urlDisabled on RemoteSetupFields), the uvloop extra split (uvicorn
without [standard]), and the umask-scoping spawn test.
uv.lock regenerated with pm.build_env --lock-only; new utf-8 reads from
main switched to utf-8-sig (check-windows-footguns).
A pin is validated as 40 hex, but that does not make it a commit: a tag
object has a sha of its own, and an entry recorded from 'git rev-parse <tag>'
names the tag object rather than the commit it points at. Git resolves the
ref and detaches at the commit, so the revision guard compared a commit
against a tag-object sha and refused a CORRECT checkout — the entry was
uninstallable, with no way through (see the kiro-acp catalog entry).
Peel the pin to its commit before comparing. The guard keeps its teeth: HEAD
must still be exactly the commit the pin names, and a checkout that lands
anywhere else is still rejected. An unresolvable pin falls back to the raw
string, so a genuinely wrong sha fails exactly as before.
Tests: an annotated-tag pin installs at its commit (and records the commit,
not the tag object, so 'plugins update' drift checks stay exact); a
checkout that lands on another commit is still rejected. Red on base:
'Checked-out revision "..." does not match requested commit "..."'.

Verified with a build_environment test venv (no editable finder, no committed
PM selection) plus real uv on PATH — the shape CI runs.
- test_old_updater_takeover: the fake NEW checkout carries update_handoff.py;
the test never relied on the source being importable from an editable venv.
- test_update_launch_completion: record the completion-tail child instead of
running the checkout's (nonexistent) source_completion.py.
- test_update_missing_configured_deps: source_launch already stubs
hermes_cli/; link the remaining modules beside the stub.
- test_worker: the injected runtime_lock stub accepts the timeout kwarg the
worker now passes (it raised TypeError before reaching the lock).
- test_plugin_guard / test_plugin_install_ref: PM publishes plugins only under
the active home's plugins/ and does so in the worker — install into the
sandboxed home, and fail the metadata write inside the worker.
- test_pm_build_consumers: setup_toolchain deliberately puts uv on PATH after
the interpreter (c8bbac5c6e); assert that ordering instead of its absence.
- test_icon_flavors: tile_color reads the most chromatic lower-half pixel (the
inward contrasting border and LANCZOS smear defeat a fixed coordinate); the
SHA glyph readback skips cells the portrait covers (da9f6d2dcd renders her in
front of the badge) and requires a majority of each glyph.
- test_desktop_update_target: the fixture CLI reports the checkout as its
install directory again (parents[1] inside the string was bumped with the
file move in cb7c688171).
- test_termux_python_linkage: skip when the host has no shared libpython or no
patchelf (relocatable python-build-standalone in CI).
- test_source_build_env: smoke-env.mjs is dependency-free (main removed the
Playwright entry it imported through); pm/_fixtures.stage_host_python copies
the stdlib beside the interpreter for payload tests.
test_api_server_runs::test_events_stream_forwards_interim_commentary is an
upstream flake (identical file on origin/main fails 2/3 locally).
Run historical updater completion in a fresh interpreter so cached imports
cannot revive retired dependency installers. Share Git and ZIP completion,
carry receipt and recovery state, and preserve child exit status.
Route plugin admission, binary acquisition, desktop launch and build paths
through PM. Replace redundant helpers and tests with real worker, package,
publication and launch checks. Keep the shipped compatibility surface fixed.
Targeted Python and desktop checks pass. Native update journeys and fresh
production image qualification remain pending. This is a checkpoint before
those acceptance runs.
Activation reaches plugin discovery before the application dependencies
exist. Give PM its own locked Python project and runtime so it can install
or repair the application without importing that dependency tree.
Keep PM outside the application workspace. A shared uv workspace resolves
the application graph and cannot provide this isolation. Route mutations
through an isolated worker and preserve transaction callbacks, cancellation,
custom package registrations, and correlated receipts.
Use the same runtime builder for source installs and packaged payloads.
Keep offline wheelhouse support in that builder. Nix builds the independent
PM lock as a separate derivation. Refuse lazy-disabled bootstrap before
installing tools or dependencies.
Move first-party YAML readers and writers to ruamel. Keep the application
lock's transitive PyYAML requirements for third-party packages.
Verification:
- Focused canonical Python suite: 177 passed, 1 host-gated skip.
- Electron backend probes: 12 passed. Electron typecheck passed.
- Both uv locks, scoped lint, Bash syntax, and whitespace checks passed.
- Cold activation, corrupt-app repair, offline staging, and relocation ran.
- Built and exercised the Nix PM runtime and standalone YAML merge script.
Six broader caller test files retain the same 24 failing test IDs as an
archive of HEAD. The existing real-home guard blocks those tests before
they can exercise the affected paths. No full-suite pass is claimed.
Native Windows signing and full Bionic package execution remain unverified.
Gate the POSIX-only and symlink-only tests with the linux_only and
require_symlinks markers. Fix the real cross-platform bugs:
- file_operations: use the translate_path flag, send snippets as base64, and
use sys.executable (the MS Store python3 stub and the list2cmdline
backslash collapse both broke snippets)
- approval: treat backslash as a Windows path separator, not an escape
- registry, browser_registry, secret_sources, plugins: normalize scope-key case
- checkpoint_manager, plugins_cmd: clear read-only bits before delete
- deadline: make MAX_SAFE_TIMEOUT_S fit the Windows limit
- image_routing, acp, cua_backend, daytona: fix Windows and POSIX paths
- hermes_state: match backslash in the retag LIKE clause
- kanban, disk-cleanup: match drive paths and split command arguments
- scripts: emit host separators through as_posix
207 test files are gated or isolated.
