Groups: policy, group-JID allowlist, and that participants are still authorised by
the gateway sender allowlist or pairing (`open` alone admits nobody without one);
`require_mention` defaults to false; WHATSAPP_GROUP_POLICY / WHATSAPP_GROUP_ALLOWED_USERS
rows in the environment reference. The alt-id node tests collapse to one (the
participantAlt case duplicated the first-contact case; the "still resolves via mapping
files" case only re-asserted matchesAllowedUser).
Mechanical `check_doc_links.py --fix` pass over website/docs (hand-authored
and generated pages) and the zh-Hans mirror: 1,868 route-style links
(`](/section/page#anchor)`, `](/docs/...)`) become `](../section/page.md#anchor)`.
Every target was asserted to exist on disk; anchors and query strings are
preserved; fenced code blocks and inline-code examples are untouched.
Two dead targets found by the converter were fixed by hand first:
memory-providers.md linked `/user-guide/plugins` (page is
`user-guide/features/plugins`), and the zh-Hans learning-path still linked the
removed `rl-training` page — ported the EN treatment (external Atropos link).
Docusaurus build after: EN locale 0 unresolved Markdown links, 0 broken links,
0 broken anchors.
Follow-up to the salvaged hermes_constants expansion (#109212): the CLI has
~30 raw `os.environ["HERMES_HOME"]` readers (fast --version path, early
display.interface probe, profile re-home, dotenv loader, subprocess-home
helper) that never go through get_hermes_home(). A literal `~` (fish, or
any quoted value) left them resolving `~/.hermes` against cwd while the
resolver now expands it, so the process would disagree with itself.
Normalize the env var once, at the earliest point of hermes_cli/main.py
(stdlib-only, before the fast paths), and expand it in the one raw
hermes_constants reader (`_profile_home_path`). A relative value that is
not tilde/variable-shaped is deliberately left alone: rejecting it would
break `HERMES_HOME=./tmp-home` in tests and CI for no user-facing gain.
Tests: real-CLI subprocess with HERMES_HOME='~/.x' under a fake HOME asserts
`config path` lands in the fake home and that no literal `~` directory
appears under cwd (the reporter's acceptance criterion, #114353), plus a
unit test for the normalizer. Docs: environment-variables reference.
The adapter honours six env fallbacks for discord.missed_message_backfill
(including the new MAX_ATTEMPTS one) but none was in the environment
variables reference; document them next to the other DISCORD_* rows.
Closes the last atom of #112615. A Desktop app started from the Dock, Finder or a
desktop launcher inherits a minimal environment, so the GITHUB_TOKEN / GH_TOKEN rung
landed in #113190 never fires for exactly the users the issue is about (shared exit
IP, 60/hour anonymous budget exhausted by neighbours). The update check now walks the
same ladder as the Python GitHub client (tools/skills_hub_github.py::GitHubAuth):
1. GITHUB_TOKEN, then GH_TOKEN, from the launch env (unchanged).
2. `gh auth token` — execFile with an argv array (no shell), stdin closed, 3 s
timeout, windowsHide. `gh` is resolved on PATH plus the GUI-safe install
locations backend-env already appends for the backend (Homebrew, /usr/local,
~/.local/bin, nix profile, the Windows GitHub CLI installer dirs). The outcome
(token or none) is cached for the process lifetime so gh runs at most once.
3. Anonymous.
A rejected credential (401) still retries anonymously; the log line names the
source (env vars vs gh login) and never the token, once per source per process.
A rejected gh token also drops the cache so a re-login is picked up by the next
check. envTokenRejected is renamed githubTokenRejected since both rungs use it.
Live: with PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin and no env token, the module found
gh, resolved a credential in 135 ms and api.github.com reported a 5000/hour core
budget (anonymous: 60). A logged-out gh and a hanging gh both resolved to null
(anonymous) in 5 ms / 3001 ms.
Docs: the credential ladder is documented on the Desktop "Updating" page and in
the environment-variables reference.
Trim the salvaged ladder to its env rung and make the 403 copy actionable.
- github-api-auth.ts keeps githubTokenFromEnv / githubApiHeaders; the
`gh auth token` rung (resolveGithubToken, readGhCliToken, the per-process
cache and the execFile import in main.ts) is dropped. Whether a GUI app may
silently spend the user's gh CLI login on a passive background check is a
product call, not a bug fix; the pure seam makes re-adding it a ~15-line
follow-up.
- fetchGitHubApi reads GITHUB_TOKEN / GH_TOKEN from process.env per request
(nothing stored) and attaches x-ratelimit-remaining / x-ratelimit-reset plus
whether the call was authenticated to the rejected error.
- describeUpdateCheckFailure moves out of the unimportable main.ts into
update-api-check.ts. A 403/429 with x-ratelimit-remaining: 0 now says the
anonymous budget is 60/hour per network address shared with everyone behind
the same connection, gives the real reset time and names GITHUB_TOKEN as the
remedy; a 403 without rate-limit headers is reported as a plain HTTP 403
instead of a rate limit the user did not cause.
- Docs: desktop.md "Updating" and the GITHUB_TOKEN row in
environment-variables.md.
- Tests trimmed to two invariants per module.
Why: behind a shared exit IP "try again in an hour" is advice the user cannot
act on, and the old copy hid the one thing that does help.
Both readers now share utils.env_var_enabled(), so the reference table
spells out the falsy values instead of implying "any value enables".
Also registers the contributor email mapping for the salvaged commit.
tests/tools/test_code_execution.py::test_timezone_injected_when_set asserted
child_env["TZ"] == "America/New_York" unconditionally, which encoded the
Windows defect as intended behaviour; on win32 it now asserts TZ is absent and
keeps the POSIX assertion.
Add a windows_only live-child test to test_code_execution_windows_env.py: with
timezone: configured, a real Windows child's time.timezone and astimezone()
offset must equal the test process's own OS-zone view — the reporter's exact
witness (time.timezone == 0, +01:00 instead of -07:00, tzname still correct).
Docs (environment-variables.md, configuration.md): HERMES_TIMEZONE / timezone:
reaches execute_code children as TZ on Linux/macOS only; Windows children keep
the OS zone because the Windows C runtime parses only POSIX-form TZ strings.
Sibling env builders swept: the remote-backend prefix in
code_execution_tool.py (TZ=... before `python3 script.py`) targets POSIX
backends (Docker/SSH/Modal) and is unchanged; no other spawner forwards
HERMES_TIMEZONE into TZ. HERMES_TIMEZONE itself stays stripped from the child
(adf23550f5: under the multiplexed gateway it holds only the default
profile's value).
Refs #112233
`hermes config set TELEGRAM_GROUP_ALLOWED_USERS ...` (and ~290 other documented
variables Hermes reads straight from os.getenv without registering them in
OPTIONAL_ENV_VARS) still landed as a config.yaml top-level scalar with a notice,
while the setup flows write .env and one-shot CLI readers never bridge YAML
scalars — two writers, two readers. #112250 routed the registered names; this
closes the class with a shape rule: any bare ^[A-Z][A-Z0-9_]*$ key is an
environment setting.
- set: writes .env, drops a stale config.yaml copy, never writes UPPER_SNAKE
into config.yaml (--force included); the env writer's denylist
(HERMES_YOLO_MODE, PATH, ...) now refuses cleanly instead of the YAML detour
bridging the value into os.environ; a name neither registered nor in the
environment-variables reference gets a one-line note but is still saved.
- get: .env first; a leftover top-level config.yaml copy is reported as stale.
- unset: removes the .env entry and the stale copy.
- Registered names, credentials (credential lifecycle + masking), dotted paths
and lowercase bare keys are unchanged.
Fixes#111848 (first half landed in #112250).
Only names in OPTIONAL_ENV_VARS / _EXTRA_ENV_KEYS and the platform *_HOME_CHANNEL /
*_ALLOWED_USERS suffix family route to .env; other documented ALL-CAPS names still land in
config.yaml as top-level scalars with a notice. Say so instead of 'every documented
environment variable' (#111848 stays open for the remaining names).
`hermes config set FEISHU_HOME_CHANNEL oc_x` wrote the top level of config.yaml
while the platform setup flows and /sethome write the same name to .env via
save_env_value, so two writers fed two readers: the gateway bridges the yaml copy
into the environment only when .env lacks the name, one-shot CLI readers never
bridge, and the two copies diverged silently (#111848). Only credential-shaped
names were routed to .env because `_is_env_config_key` is the provider-credential
predicate.
Follow-up to KoNit-K's cherry-picked fix (#111850), which routed the
`setup_hidden_env` suffix family: the predicate now lives in the topical sibling
`hermes_cli/config_env_routing.py` and covers every bare name Hermes itself
registers as an environment variable (OPTIONAL_ENV_VARS, _EXTRA_ENV_KEYS — "env
var names written to .env" — plus the setup-hidden suffixes for plugin adapters
nobody enumerated), so `*_ALLOWED_USERS`, `WHATSAPP_MODE`, `MATRIX_PASSWORD` and
the rest of the adapter-saved family take the same file. `set` and `unset` also
drop a stale same-named top-level config.yaml copy so the reporter's drift cannot
come back, and `get` resolves .env first then that copy — the gateway's own read
order. Provider credentials keep the credential_lifecycle rotation path.
Docs: environment-variables.md tip, hermes_cli/AGENTS.md config rule.
`gateway.allow_all_users: true` (and the top-level spelling) in config.yaml
was a silent no-op: `_TOPLEVEL_BRIDGE` never forwarded it, GatewayConfig has
no field, and every allow-all reader (authz mixin default-deny branch,
startup access check, own-policy adapters, Discord/Matrix/Email plugin
gates) consults the GATEWAY_ALLOW_ALL_USERS env var only.
Bridge the YAML key into that env var in `bridge_core_env_settings`, the
one seam every reader already shares, instead of threading a new config
attribute through ten readers:
- first-writer-wins: an explicit env var beats YAML (matches every other
{PLATFORM}_* gate);
- skipped inside a multiplexed secondary profile's scope (#80099 class):
the secondary's config.yaml must not become the default profile's policy,
and the isolation test now asserts GATEWAY_ALLOW_ALL_USERS stays unset;
- a startup warning names config.yaml as the grant source, because the key
was inert until now and a forgotten `true` flips the posture to open.
Tests: both spellings authorize a stranger through `_is_user_authorized`;
`false`, absent key, and env=false over YAML=true all stay denied.
Docs: security guide, env-var reference, gateway internals.
Fixes#110690
#111809 accepted any *.nousresearch.com https host once the operator's Portal override
pointed at a non-production Portal. That let a network-provenance value — the Portal's
refresh response — pick any Nous-owned host as the bearer recipient, including hosts that
are not inference gateways. Owning the DNS suffix is not the same as being an authorized
recipient, and the validator's threat model (an injected refresh response) is exactly the
case a suffix rule fails to bound.
The recipient is now the operator's own NOUS_INFERENCE_BASE_URL: a non-production host
returned by the Portal is accepted exactly when it equals that override's host, otherwise
the strict production set stands. The Portal override grants nothing by itself. What the
operator gains over plain use of the override is that the Portal's value is then persisted
and used for the pricing scope and proxy instead of being healed to production, and the
per-turn "refusing inference URL host" warning stops. No environment is named in code.
Raised on #111809 review. Tests: recipient match accepted, unrelated Nous host refused, no
override refused, Portal override alone grants nothing, the match follows the profile scope
under multiplexing; the widening cases are red on main. Docs row for NOUS_INFERENCE_BASE_URL.

The per-step leases inside maybe_auto_archive / maybe_auto_prune_and_vacuum
(archive, prune, sweep, vacuum) cover every long step of the construction-time
block, and each renews right before the step it protects, so the extra
report_startup_progress(900) at the top of GatewayRunner._init_session_db
added nothing but a stale phase label ("gateway_startup_state_maintenance"
would outlive the archive step and mask the phase name in the fired record).
Dropped; gateway/run.py is back to origin/main.
Tests: the two contributor tests monkeypatched report_startup_progress in the
module and asserted phase names (change-detectors on the strings). Replaced by
one test that arms a REAL StartupWatchdogHandle and asserts the maintenance
block renews it four times with lease_until in the future — the property the
poller's `lease_until > now` branch actually needs (#111092). Red on
origin/main: lease_count stays at the schema-init lease.
Docs: HERMES_STARTUP_WATCHDOG / HERMES_STARTUP_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT_S existed only
in the module docstring; add them to website/docs/reference/environment-variables.md
next to the respawn-storm variables (existing env vars only, no new surface).
A token minted by a non-production Portal is meant to be spent at that environment's own
inference gateway, and the Portal's refresh response names that host. The allowlist applied
to Portal-returned inference URLs was production-only, so the value was refused as "not in
allowlist" and healed to the production host — a token the production Portal never issued,
sent to the production gateway, which 401s it. Every hosted non-production instance hit
this on every gateway turn once #108319 made the deploy-wide NOUS_INFERENCE_BASE_URL
invisible inside a routed profile scope (by design, #65941).
The widening is keyed on the operator's trusted HERMES_PORTAL_BASE_URL override, never on
the stored portal_base_url: when that override names a Portal outside the production
allowlist, any https host under the Nous domain is accepted; otherwise the strict production
set stands. So a poisoned auth.json cannot widen the set, a production-Portal session that
finds a foreign inference URL in its state is still refused and healed, and the bearer can
only ever go to a Nous-owned host. No environment is named in code. Because the override is
read through the profile scope (previous commit), each multiplexed profile decides for
itself.
Validation: 4 invariant tests (accepted only under a non-production override; look-alike
domains, dotless suffix and http still refused; stored portal alone does not widen; the
decision follows the profile scope under multiplex) — the new-behaviour ones red on the
previous commit. Main's existing validation tests are unchanged and green. Live receipt for
the symptom and the fixed chain on a hosted instance: #111589.
Based on #102863 and its rebase onto the decomposed auth_nous.py in #111589, whose
portal-keyed pairing this replaces with the same behaviour and no environment literals.

3fad83df31 (Aug 11) moved Relay exporter config to a plugins.toml
selected by HERMES_NEMO_RELAY_PLUGINS_TOML. A .env still carrying the legacy
exporter vars and no TOML logs ONE warning and initialises no exporters, so
users who followed the earlier docs lost every trace silently (the
maintainer's stopped Aug 20, noticed Sep 14; five multiplexed profiles on
the same box carry the same eight vars today).
- `hermes_cli/relay_plugin_migrate.py`: build the document from the
`nemo_relay.observability` dataclasses (`ComponentSpec(...).to_dict()`,
so the `type = "file"` sink discriminator is emitted), validate it by
activating it through `nemo_relay.plugin.initialize` + `clear_async`,
write `<home>/relay-plugins.toml` (tomli_w when installed, minimal emitter
otherwise), set HERMES_NEMO_RELAY_PLUGINS_TOML in that .env, and comment
the legacy lines out (never delete). Defaults mirror the removed plugin so
files land where they used to.
- `hermes update` runs it for the default home AND every live named profile
(each writes its own TOML) as a best-effort post-update step, with a loud
notice; `hermes migrate relay [--all-profiles] [--no-validate]` runs it on
demand.
- The runtime WARNING and the `hermes doctor` finding now say "NO traces
are being exported" and name the exact command and file path.
- Docs: environment-variables.md + built-in-plugins.md carry the migration
note and a complete plugins.toml example including `type = "file"`.
The Matrix docs described six agent-exposed matrix_* tools and three MATRIX_TOOLS_ALLOW_* env gates that were never implemented — the tool names and gates appear nowhere in code. Docs now describe actual behavior: no Matrix-specific agent tools; reactions/redactions are internal to approval prompts and pickers; MATRIX_ALLOWED_ROOMS scopes responses. Fixes#100535.
Adds plugins/web/perplexity — a keyed-only WebSearchProvider over httpx:
- search: POST https://api.perplexity.ai/search (documented Search API),
search_context_size=low so `snippet` stays description-sized;
results[].snippet -> description, max_results capped at the API's 20.
- extract: POST /sdk/content/snippets — the query-relevant page-excerpt
route behind `pplx content snippets` (the CLI's `content fetch` is
deprecated upstream). web_extract has no query, so the URLs' path words
serve as the relevance query; per-URL `error` entries survive a 200.
- Wired into the same touchpoints as the other keyed vendors: legacy
backend set + credential ladder + availability probe (web_tools),
registry preference walk, OPTIONAL_ENV_VARS, `hermes config`/status/
dump key lists, nous_subscription direct-credential detection, setup
summary, test conftests, docs.
Not a keyless-ring member (Perplexity has no anonymous tier). Related
closed PRs #9192 / #23981 / #45225 predate the plugin ABC.
- alibaba-coding-plan-cn / alibaba-token-plan-cn keep the shared intl key vars
as ordered fallbacks after their dedicated *_CN_API_KEY, so users who set
ALIBABA_CODING_PLAN_API_KEY / ALIBABA_TOKEN_PLAN_API_KEY for the CN endpoint
keep working (the PR as filed dropped them).
- list_authenticated_providers hides a '-cn' row whose only lit key vars are
ones it shares with its non-CN sibling, unless that CN provider is the
configured model.provider. With only the shared key: one row, not two;
DASHSCOPE_API_KEY alone: 3 alibaba rows, not 4.
- Docs: environment-variables.md, providers.md.
- Tavily plugin deleted (plugins/web/tavily), keyless endpoints and
ring entry removed from keyless_mcp, legacy backend set / credential
ladder / preference walks / rescue key map scrubbed.
- TAVILY_API_KEY deregistered across config, setup, status, dump, and
nous_subscription surfaces. The tvly- redaction pattern stays --
legacy keys in user envs still deserve masking.
- Sibling test pins migrated (keenable/exa stand in where tavily was
the fixture vendor); tavily test suite deleted.
- Docs updated: web-search, configuration, integrations,
environment-variables, tools-reference, web-dashboard, provider
plugin dev guide.
Live-verified from an isolated HERMES_HOME with all web creds blanked:
zero-config resolution lands in the 4-vendor ring, live keyless ring
search succeeds, no tavily anywhere in resolution order.
Follow-ups on top of #98964's cherry-pick:
- PHOTON_READ_RECEIPTS env toggle (default true) so users can keep
messages at Delivered; declared in plugin.yaml optional_env
- adapter drops both 'read' and 'read_receipt' content types (alias
coverage from #91759 by @mooserini) + regression test
- docs: photon.md feature note + environment-variables.md row
Sweeper review, all three points:
- Placement: no new plugins/model-providers/ directory. The Token Plan
profiles register from the existing alibaba plugin module — one module
per vendor, matching how the kimi module carries both of its endpoint
variants. Token Plan is the same vendor/service (Model Studio), same
OpenAI-compatible protocol, its own key + endpoints; splitting to a
standalone repo remains a 5-minute change if maintainers prefer.
- Runtime coverage: TestRuntimeAlibabaRegionalAndTokenPlan exercises
resolve_runtime_provider() for all four variants — provider, api_key,
api_mode, base_url — alongside the existing zai/minimax/kilocode
runtime regressions.
- Docs: providers.md, environment-variables.md, cli-commands.md updated
with the bundled variants and their env keys/base-url overrides.
web_extract stopped using an auxiliary LLM long ago (deterministic
truncate-and-store), but browser snapshots still routed oversized
accessibility trees through the auxiliary web_extract model, keeping a
dead-looking aux slot alive across every config/picker surface.
- tools/browser_tool.py: remove _extract_relevant_content and
_get_extraction_model; oversized snapshots always truncate at line
boundaries, store the full tree to cache/web, and append a read_file
pointer (element refs beyond the cut live in the file)
- tools/browser_camofox.py: same — no LLM path
- Remove auxiliary.web_extract slot: config_defaults (removal note, same
pattern as session_search/PR #27590), cli.py defaults + env bridge,
gateway/run.py bridged keys, hermes config display, hermes model picker,
dashboard REST slots, desktop + web AUX_TASKS, i18n labels (en/zh/
zh-hant/ja/ar)
- Docs: env-vars, configuration, fallback-providers, browser + zh-Hans
mirrors (web-search zh-Hans was stale on the old LLM pipeline — synced
to truncate-and-store truth)
- Tests updated: aux bridge uses approval slot, browser tests assert the
LLM path is gone and stored files are secret-redacted
- Updated the Tavily API key description to clarify that it is optional and keyless access is supported.
- Modified the Tavily plugin and provider to handle requests with or without an API key, using Bearer authentication when the key is provided.
- Enhanced documentation to reflect the new keyless functionality and updated environment variable descriptions.
- Added tests to ensure correct behavior for both keyed and keyless requests.
Follow-up on the salvaged commits from PRs #87965 and #87967
(@AiwendilInTheWoods):
- Promote the media-send timeout to the standard resolution pattern:
HERMES_CRON_MEDIA_SEND_TIMEOUT env var, then
cron.media_send_timeout_seconds in config.yaml, then 300s default
(mirrors script_timeout_seconds; .env stays secrets-only).
- Register the config key in DEFAULT_CONFIG and document both surfaces
(environment-variables reference + cron user guide).
- Fold the empty-str() exception fallback into the error string recorded
in delivery_errors (post-#88631 the reason reaches the run status, not
just the log line).
- Tests: timeout resolution precedence + TimeoutError reason fallback.
Background process completions on messaging platforms now default to a
one-line status message (✅/❌ + command + duration; failures append a
short output tail) instead of dumping the raw output buffer into the
chat. New display.background_process_notifications mode 'concise' is
the default; 'all' keeps the old raw-dump behavior for anyone who wants
it. Config migration v35 moves users still on the old implicit default
'all' to 'concise' on their next update; explicit result/error/off
choices are preserved.
The Hugging Face agent-harness registry matches standard-var values
EXACTLY against the harness id. Our registry id is 'hermes-agent'
(huggingface.js agent-harnesses.ts), so AI_AGENT=hermes was counted as
'unknown' — fixed at both entry points.
Remote terminal backends (Docker/SSH/Modal/Daytona/Singularity/Vercel)
never inherit the Hermes process env, and the cross-session leak guard
deliberately strips HERMES_SESSION_* from subprocess envs in engaged
multi-session hosts — so hf/huggingface_hub traffic from those shells was
unattributable. _wrap_command now exports AI_AGENT/HERMES_AGENT inside
every wrapped command with ${VAR:-default} semantics (outer harness is
never clobbered), and the snapshot dump excludes both names so a baked
value can never shadow a later outer harness.
E2E: verified against real huggingface_hub 1.27.0 detect_agent() with a
cached registry — 'hermes-agent' detected via AI_AGENT and via
HERMES_SESSION_ID; old 'hermes' value reproduced the 'unknown' bug.
CLI and gateway entry points now set AI_AGENT=hermes (the emerging
cross-agent standard read by e.g. huggingface_hub agent detection) and
HERMES_AGENT=true, via setdefault so an outer harness is never
clobbered.
- optional-skills/devops/actual-setup: field-tested setup skill contributed
by shl0ms, updated for the first-class 'actual' provider (the original
