Gate round-1 follow-ups on the #121486 fix:
- auxiliary_client: inline the pool route lookup (no dead try/except or
fallbacks; HERMES_CODEX_BASE_URL short-circuits once) and read auth.json
directly when the pool yields no token (no second uncached pool load,
no re-select race pairing a new pool key with chatgpt.com).
- image plugin: _read_codex_credential() is the single source for both
is_available() and generate(); _post_image_request requires base_url.
- auth_codex: drop the unused _pool_codex_access_token wrapper; the route
helper's error fallback reads the profile-scoped override, not the raw
process env.
- model setup flow: the confirm guards get the resolved Codex base, not
the chatgpt.com constant.
- cli_model_switch_mixin: self.base_url is always set.
Runtime identity resolved through hermes_cli.__version__ (a static 0.0.0
on source installs, rewritten by release stamping) leaked v0.0.0 into
About, /api/health, User-Agents, and plugin compat, and source updates
showed "couldn't reach update server" because identity and channel
authority disagreed with the checkout.
Now: get_version_info() resolves install stamp -> live git -> unknown,
never pyproject metadata, never a package constant. Source checkouts
derive identity from their reachable release tag; the completion tail of
every successful install/update/historical takeover atomically rewrites
install-stamp.json with that identity; a stale source stamp whose commit
no longer matches HEAD defers to live git. ACP/TUI use derived_version
for display and base_version for protocol fields; all ~44 runtime
__version__ consumers migrated; hermes_cli.__version__ and generated
_version.py are gone; release stamping only touches the native manifests
external builders consume (nix/tauri/cargo) and passes release identity
straight into write_install_stamp.py; pyproject.toml stays inert 0.0.0.
Desktop no longer synthesizes a competing install-stamp.json: the
checkout owns its stamp, and desktop-bootstrap classification keys on
the bootstrap-complete marker. verify-bootstrap-version-stamp.py now
cross-checks the checkout's stamp (baseVersion + commit == HEAD).
Validation: 31-file focused suite green (version identity, stamping,
adoption, providers, gateway, acp/tui runtime identity, api server via
extras env, release graph); desktop tsc + 25 vitest green; real-repo
probe: base=unknown derived=git.0635606.dirty source=git on this
checkout; clean-env imports resolve entirely from this tree; windows
footgun + compat-pointer scans clean.
Change-detectors, tautologies, source-reading tests, redundant duplicates,
mock-echo tests and dead/unrunnable tests. Per-test rationale in the lane
ledger (category + reason for every removal).
An empty catalog now legitimately triggers the 0.0.0 sentinel fallback (two requests per
site), so the fake answers one model and the one-request-per-site count still holds; every
request still carries the residency headers.
Production:
- agent/bedrock_adapter.py, agent/vertex_adapter.py: pm.ensure_import ran at
module import. In any process that imports these modules without a committed
PM selection (CI's build_environment test venv, a fresh checkout) that sync
rebuilt the dependency environment mid-process and replaced sys.path with a
generation missing the caller's own packages (anthropic, aiohttp vanished).
The extra is now ensured at first client build / credential request.
- plugins/platforms/matrix/adapter.py: a complete install needs no
ensure_and_bind round trip; only a partial one syncs.
- tools/browser_tool.py: drop the facade's duplicate warm_agent_browser_npx_cache
shim; the compat pointer already resolves to browser_tool_install.
Test harness:
- tests/home_io_guard.py: PATH-entry probes (shutil.which) and the running
interpreter's own installation (stdlib reads, realpath ancestry, fixture
symlinks into it) are not Hermes state; a patched Path.expanduser must not
crash the guard. run_tests.sh no longer filters PATH — the guard owns it.
- tests/tui_gateway/conftest.py: import hermes_bootstrap before any file opens
a MagicMock hermes_constants window (6 files exited the process at boot).
- tests/hermes_cli/conftest.py probe_root: scratch checkouts the import guard
probes need hermes_bootstrap.py (the launcher imports it).
- tests/pm/_fixtures.py stage_host_python: a copied relocatable python needs
its stdlib beside it (No module named 'encodings' on CI).
- tests/install/e2e-assets/smoke-env.mjs: dependency-free env shaping so the
source-build-env probe runs under bare node (main deleted the Playwright
entry it was imported through).
- adapt main's new tests to branch seams (model_metadata_http, launch
completion tail, CI toolchain exports uv after python, source_launch
hermes_cli stub, systemd_notify single marker).
test_residency_header_from_jwt_claims asserted the shared helper directly, so
reverting the hermes_cli/codex_models.py or agent/model_metadata.py call sites
to base stayed green. Drive _fetch_models_from_api (httpx.get) and
_fetch_codex_oauth_context_lengths_with_source (requests.get) with a
compute-residency-only JWT and assert x-openai-internal-codex-residency and
ChatGPT-Account-ID reach the outgoing headers. Red with either call site
reverted to base; green at head.
Five change-detector tests collapse into one positive invariant (data
residency wins, compute residency is the fallback, the sibling /usage
header builder derives the same value) and one control (no claim or a
malformed token never carries the header). The residency value must
otherwise be probed live; see the PR body.
Extract chatgpt_data_residency (fallback: chatgpt_compute_residency) from
the OAuth JWT and send as x-openai-internal-codex-residency header on
requests to chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex. Residency-enforced workspaces
return 401 without this header.
Fixes#23896
run_agent.py: delete the `# noqa: F401` re-export block (agent.process_bootstrap
OpenAI/_SafeWriter/_get_proxy_*, model_tools get_tool_definitions/
handle_function_call/check_toolset_requirements, FailoverReason,
_qwen_portal_headers/_routermint_headers, session_persistence names,
estimate_request_tokens_rough, ContextCompressor + friends, jittered_backoff,
prompt_builder names, message_sanitization names, tool_dispatch_helpers
names) — 41 names run_agent never used itself — and the `_STREAM_DIAG_HEADERS`
back-compat class alias (no in-tree reader). run_agent now imports only what
it uses (get_toolset_for_tool, is_local_endpoint, coalesce/uniquify tool-call
ids, cleanup_vm/get_active_env from terminal_tool_lifecycle).
agent/*: `_ra().X` late-binds that only reached a re-export now import the
defining module directly (agent_runtime_helpers -> process_bootstrap.OpenAI,
model_tools.handle_function_call, session_persistence._safe_session_filename_component;
agent_init -> model_tools.get_tool_definitions/check_toolset_requirements,
_lazy_headers("agent.client_lifecycle", ...) for qwen/routermint;
system_prompt -> agent.prompt_builder / model_tools directly, dropping its
own _ra() shim and the `_r` parameter threading). `_ra()` stays for
run_agent-resident names (logger, AIAgent, _hermes_home, _set_interrupt, ...).
toolsets.py: remove resolve_multiple_toolsets (shim-only, restored by
34abf954bd); tests/test_toolsets.py pins the same union behavior via
resolve_toolset over each name.
providers/__init__.py: drop the OMIT_TEMPERATURE re-export (no callers via the
package); ProviderProfile stays because __init__ uses it for annotations —
2 tests repointed to providers.base.
agent/iteration_budget.py: drop the "run_agent re-exports the class"
docstring pointer; 4 tests import IterationBudget from its home.
model_tools.py (arg_coercion names), agent/tool_executor.py, and
hermes_cli/cli_session_mixin.py repoints landed via a sibling commit on this
shared worktree.
Callers repointed: gateway/run.py, hermes_cli/cli_chat_turn_mixin.py,
hermes_cli/cli_tui_mixin.py, tui_gateway/session_workdir.py,
agent/transports/codex.py (one-line imports) + comment pointers in
tools/file_state.py, tools/schema_sanitizer.py, scripts/tool_search_livetest.py.
Tests: patch("run_agent.X") / monkeypatch.setattr(run_agent, "X") /
`from run_agent import X` -> defining module across 99 test files.
Remove unused imports (F401) and duplicate/shadowed import
redefinitions (F811) across the codebase using ruff's safe
autofixes. No behavioral changes -- imports only.
- ~1400 safe autofixes applied across 644 files (net -1072 lines)
- __init__.py re-exports preserved (excluded from F401 removal so
public re-export surfaces stay intact)
- Re-exports that are imported or monkeypatched by tests but look
unused in their defining module are kept with explicit # noqa:
F401 (gateway/run.py load_dotenv; run_agent re-exports from
agent.message_sanitization, agent.context_compressor,
agent.retry_utils, agent.prompt_builder, agent.process_bootstrap,
agent.codex_responses_adapter)
- Unsafe F841 (unused-variable) fixes deliberately skipped -- those
can change behavior when the RHS has side effects
- ruff lints remain disabled in pyproject.toml (only PLW1514 is
selected); this is a one-time cleanup, not a config change
Verification:
- python -m compileall: clean
- pytest --collect-only: all 27161 tests collect (zero import errors)
- core entry points import clean (run_agent, model_tools, cli,
toolsets, hermes_state, batch_runner, gateway)
- static scan: every name any test imports directly from an edited
module still resolves
The _CODEX_AUX_MODEL constant had already rotated twice in 6 weeks
(gpt-5.3-codex -> gpt-5.2-codex -> now broken again at gpt-5.2-codex)
because ChatGPT-account Codex gates which models it accepts via an
undocumented, shifting allow-list that OpenAI publishes no changelog
for. Any pinned default will keep going stale. Issue #17533 reports
the current breakage: every ChatGPT-account auxiliary fallback fails
with HTTP 400 "model is not supported" and the 60s pause loop degrades
long sessions.
Rather than reset the clock with another stale pin (PR #17544 proposes
gpt-5.2-codex -> gpt-5.4), remove the hardcoded second-order Codex
fallback entirely:
- Delete `_CODEX_AUX_MODEL`.
- Drop `_try_codex` from `_get_provider_chain()` (the auto chain now
ends at api-key providers; 4 rungs instead of 5).
- Rename `_try_codex() -> _build_codex_client(model)` and require an
explicit model from the caller. No more guessing.
- `resolve_provider_client("openai-codex", model=None)` now warns and
returns (None, None) instead of silently guessing a stale model ID.
- Remove `_try_codex` from the `provider="custom"` fallback ladder
(same stale-constant trap).
- `_resolve_strict_vision_backend("openai-codex")` routes through
`resolve_provider_client` so the caller's explicit model is honored.
Codex-main users are unaffected: Step 1 of `_resolve_auto` already
uses `main_provider` + `main_model` directly and passes the user's
configured Codex model through `resolve_provider_client`, which never
touched `_CODEX_AUX_MODEL`. Per-task overrides (`auxiliary.<task>.provider/model`)
continue to work and are the supported way to route specific aux tasks
through Codex.
Users whose main provider fails with a payment/connection error and
who have ONLY ChatGPT-account Codex auth will now see the 60s pause
without a stale-model-rejection noise line in between -- same outcome,
cleaner failure.
Closes#17533. Supersedes #17544 (which resets the clock on the
same stale-constant problem).
The cherry-picked salvage (admin28980's commit) added codex headers only on the
primary chat client path, with two inaccuracies:
- originator was 'hermes-agent' — Cloudflare whitelists codex_cli_rs,
codex_vscode, codex_sdk_ts, and Codex* prefixes. 'hermes-agent' isn't on
the list, so the header had no mitigating effect on the 403 (the
account-id header alone may have been carrying the fix).
- account-id header was 'ChatGPT-Account-Id' — upstream codex-rs auth.rs
uses canonical 'ChatGPT-Account-ID' (PascalCase, trailing -ID).
Also, the auxiliary client (_try_codex + resolve_provider_client raw_codex
branch) constructs OpenAI clients against the same chatgpt.com endpoint with
no default headers at all — so compression, title generation, vision, session
search, and web_extract all still 403 from VPS IPs.
Consolidate the header set into _codex_cloudflare_headers() in
agent/auxiliary_client.py (natural home next to _read_codex_access_token and
the existing JWT decode logic) and call it from all four insertion points:
- run_agent.py: AIAgent.__init__ (initial construction)
- run_agent.py: _apply_client_headers_for_base_url (credential rotation)
- agent/auxiliary_client.py: _try_codex (aux client)
- agent/auxiliary_client.py: resolve_provider_client raw_codex branch
Net: -36/+55 lines, -25 lines of duplicated inline JWT decode replaced by a
single helper. User-Agent switched to 'codex_cli_rs/0.0.0 (Hermes Agent)' to
match the codex-rs shape while keeping product attribution.
Tests in tests/agent/test_codex_cloudflare_headers.py cover:
- originator value, User-Agent shape, canonical header casing
- account-ID extraction from a real JWT fixture
- graceful handling of malformed / non-string / claim-missing tokens
- wiring at all four insertion points (primary init, rotation, both aux paths)
- non-chatgpt base URLs (openrouter) do NOT get codex headers
- switching away from chatgpt.com drops the headers
