An update disabled any plugin that failed a trial build or its
requires_hermes check. Both can be about us, not the plugin: an untagged
source checkout reads as an older release (#122054), so requires_hermes
misjudges a fine plugin, and a download failure says nothing about the
plugin's code. Those now sit the plugin out of the build: config stays
untouched and it rejoins once the cause clears.
Disabling still happens on evidence about the plugin: requires-python vs
the pinned interpreter, manifest_version, an invalid declaration, a uv
resolution conflict, or its own build backend failing (new BuildFailure,
keyed on uv's 'The build backend returned an error').
enabled_member_dirs now skips a requires_hermes misfit instead of
raising. Boot's currency check raised on it before any sync could run, so
the launch path never reached the update sync. The loader skips such a
plugin anyway; admission still refuses enabling one.
KittenTTS 0.8.1 requires misaki[en]>=0.9.4. PyPI's misaki 0.9.4 caps
Python below 3.13. NousResearch/misaki f03fd2be73 is upstream main with
the cap raised to <3.15 and no code change, so the extra declares
misaki[en] at that commit and uv resolves KittenTTS's requirement to it.
misaki[en] also lists spacy-curated-transformers. The newest release
that fits spacy 3.8, 0.3.1, caps Python below 3.14, so PM's `uv pip
check` rejected every 3.14 venv that carried it. Nothing imports it:
only transformer spaCy models use it, and KittenTTS never builds a
misaki G2P. A never-true override marker removes it from the lock.
torch, transformers, spaCy and num2words stay: misaki.en imports them
at module level and KittenTTS imports misaki.en.
Native bundles sync with --all-extras, so un-gating the extra would put
KittenTTS, torch and spaCy in every payload. [tool.hermes] opt-in-extras
names the extras that only an explicit selection installs. PM adds
--no-extra for each of them to an all-extras sync, so bundles and their
recorded feature list leave kittentts out, and setup still installs it
through sync_venv when the user picks it.
The extra is gated on platform instead of Python: onnxruntime has no
Intel macOS wheel and torch has no Windows ARM64 wheel. Nix gets the
hatchling build backend the misaki git source needs.
Verified on macOS arm64 with CPython 3.14.7 and uv 0.12.3:
uv sync --frozen --extra kittentts from this lock, then uv pip check
reports all 126 packages compatible. _generate_kittentts writes a
3.87 s 24 kHz WAV (RMS 3661), and no spaCy model is downloaded. A dry-run
all-extras sync with --no-extra kittentts selects none of kittentts,
misaki, torch, transformers or spaCy. The new build test fails without
the environment change and passes with it.
uv, npm ci, icon generation and the desktop build printed hundreds of
lines on every interactive install, update and `hermes desktop`.
pm/progress.py holds one policy. CI (CI / GITHUB_ACTIONS) or
HERMES_VERBOSE=1 streams child output unchanged. Otherwise each child is
one "→ label…" line, rewritten in place with its latest output on a
terminal, or just the start and finish lines when piped. A failure
always prints the last 80 lines. HERMES_VERBOSE=0 forces containment.
Applied to PM's uv runs (no uv --verbose outside CI; quick steps stay
silent unless they fail), the source build scripts (node-deps, TUI,
icons, web; npm warn lines stay out of the live line), the desktop
build and package steps, and the Windows ARM64 vcpkg/OpenSSL provider.
The policy reads the parent's environment, so the CI=1 the builders
force on their node children does not switch it to verbose.
uv writes no __pycache__ (pip does), so every module of a fresh generation
was compiled in the foreground of the first user request that imported it
(#100461; main's f298911467 / d380651a9f were lost with lazy_deps).
--compile-bytecode on the sync covers the whole install, transitive deps
included. Also drops the stray copy of that rationale that a merge left
inside gateway/status.py::_posix_is_zombie.
The previous commit dropped --verbose and broke the contract that native
build output streams live (tests/pm/test_environment_build.py). uv only
forwards backend output at DEBUG level, so keep --verbose and scope it with
RUST_LOG=uv_build_frontend=debug: the backend's own lines stream, the
interpreter/cache/reflink internals stay silent (2 lines on a no-op sync
instead of ~200 on both uv 0.11 and the pinned 0.12.3).
--verbose is uv's DEBUG level: every first-run bootstrap and sync printed
~200 lines of interpreter discovery, cache and reflink internals to the
user. Progress lines and build failures reach stderr without it.
pm.environment strips every ambient UV_* so a caller's uv settings cannot
select PM's project, interpreter or cache. That also dropped the knobs
mirrored and air-gapped networks depend on (UV_INDEX_URL/UV_DEFAULT_INDEX,
UV_NATIVE_TLS, UV_INSECURE_HOST, UV_HTTP_TIMEOUT, index credentials), and
uv never reads pip's configuration, so PIP_INDEX_URL / pip.conf mirrors
stalled against pypi.org (#88453, #94613, #95608 on main).
pm.index_config owns the allowlist and the pip→uv bridge with pip's own
precedence (PIP_INDEX_URL over pip.conf; any explicit uv index wins). Only
transport/index config crosses; the lockfile stays authoritative. A uv
timeout now raises InstallError naming those knobs instead of a raw
TimeoutExpired, so `hermes pm install` and the venv_sync status report
tell the user what to configure.
- pm.environment: the `--no-install-package <name>` root read parses [project].name without
tomllib on the pre-3.11 bootstrap python (Docker arm64 stage_runtime). Both parsers proven
to agree on the real pyproject.
- windows-build-deps.ps1 / run_tests.sh: with DISTUTILS_USE_SDK, setuptools takes link.exe
from PATH; under a bash-hosted step Git for Windows' coreutils `link` shadowed MSVC's.
The MSVC linker directory now leads PATH (cl.exe was already found — this was the next
failure in the ruamel-yaml-clib build).
- tests/install/e2e-assets/source-build-env.ps1: clear the identity variables through the
env: drive — [Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable(..., 'Process') on .NET/Unix does not
reach spawned children, so the stamp child still saw GITHUB_SHA. Red→green under nix pwsh.
- old-updater surface: warm_agent_browser_npx_cache is a permanent def in both facade and
sibling (the frozen surface names both); its compat pointer is retired, and the shims test's
__module__ check holds.
- tests re-seamed / de-faked: import guard tests use the probe_root fixture (CI has no
editable finder), the takeover child tree gets a hermes_constants stub, posix.sh hand-off
test pins HERMES_HOME (our script honours the ambient one), the two Windows-layout
PYTHONPATH tests are platforms("windows") (they fake `Lib/site-packages` on Linux; pm's
site_packages() is host-correct), setup-pin test picks Git bash over System32's WSL stub,
expose_cli's Windows test asserts the installer-convention convergence (the branch retired
"windows-installer-owned"), plugin-manifest satisfied-dep fixture uses a core dep (pyyaml is
gone), housekeeping test yaml imports go through hermes_yaml.
- apps/desktop main.ts: three imports restored in round 4 whose users main removed.
Merge fallout (my resolution errors, all caught by CI):
- hermes_cli/backup.py + gateway.py: `theirs` on those hunks re-imported clusters HEAD had
already moved to backup_restore.py / kept in the facade. backup.py loses the 349-line
duplicate (main's #110179 fix is ported into backup_restore._import_db_member); the
systemd service-unit cluster returns to gateway.py (PM's _prepare_service_launcher /
_pm_managed_node_dirs / _systemd_command have no home in main's extraction) with main's
utf-8-sig read. gateway_service_unit.py is dropped.
- gateway/run.py: main's plugin-update chore is not profile-scoped (the housekeeping
ordering test pins the scope/drain sequence).
- pyproject + 30 test files: `import yaml` -> `import hermes_yaml as yaml` (pm-clean has no
pyyaml); gateway/config._bundled_platform_manifest_name reads through hermes_yaml.
- tests re-seamed onto pm-clean's shape: residency admission (installed_engine),
supervisor child env (binary is a constructor argument), update import guard
(update_cmd_deps is gone; our probe already scrubs PYTHONPATH — both #115032 invariants
pass), shallow-count git responses (stash path asks `status --porcelain -z`); dropped
tests for retired code (_run_node_bootstrap/_ensure_tui_node, Windows resume demotion).
- tests/tools/test_local_env_blocklist.py: restore the two helpers the suite-reduction
commit dropped and the blocklist import.
Real fixes:
- pm: classify_uv_failure/ResolutionConflict move beside the uv runner (pm.environment,
stdlib-only). pm.workspace imports tomllib at module level and cannot load on the 3.10
bootstrap python that streams uv output in the Docker arm64 image.
- tools/browser_tool.warm_agent_browser_npx_cache: back as a permanent definition — it is on
the frozen old-updater surface, and the revert-scheduled compat pointer does not count.
- hermes_cli/memory_setup: the dashboard's pip row uses pm.environments.
running_from_selected_environment for installed vs restart_required.
- scripts/windows-build-deps.ps1: export DISTUTILS_USE_SDK/MSSdk so setuptools trusts the
primed MSVC environment instead of asking vswhere (`env -i` test runner on win32-arm64
compiling ruamel-yaml-clib); run_tests.sh forwards them.
- tests/pm/test_windows_build_deps.py: start the protocol test from a parent env without the
toolchain variables the runner job already exports.
- tests/conftest.py scrubs HERMES_BUNDLED_PLUGINS (Nix-wrapped hermes on the dev host);
tests/home_io_guard.py treats sys.path site-packages under the real home as the
interpreter's installation (PM-activated developer shell).
- tests-js: four `curly` lint errors from main's new scripts.
- pm.environment owns _RESOLVER_MARKERS: the streaming uv runner imported
pm.workspace, whose tomllib import fails on the 3.10 system python that
bootstraps the Docker arm64 image (No module named 'tomllib'). Invariant test
proves runtime staging needs neither tomllib nor pm.workspace.
- run_tests.sh forwards the MSVC/SDK/Rust/OpenSSL toolchain variables through
its env -i scrub so PM tests that compile ruamel-yaml-clib on Windows arm64
find cl.exe (previously 'Visual C++ 14.0 or greater is required').
- nix desktop-backend check: the spawned backend outlives cage's process group
and kept writing under the temp HERMES_HOME during rmtree; stop every
process bound to the throwaway HOME before cleanup.
- windows: test_launcher_runtime_selection imports runtime_state from
hermes_cli (moved in bbec973514); the ' spaced ' suffix row loses its
trailing space on win32 (the filesystem strips it).
- macOS: test_sealed_worker_command copies the interpreter into the payload
(the escape guard resolves symlinks) and links the host lib tree.
hermes_cli.runtime_paths (venv generations, selection, activation) moves to
pm.environments, and gains venv_bin_dir / venv_python / project_python. Every
in-tree caller asks pm for an interpreter now; pm no longer reaches back into
hermes_cli for its own environment layout (pm.packages, pm.extras, pm.ensure,
pm.paths imported hermes_cli.runtime_paths). The three open-coded
"Scripts/python.exe or bin/python" ladders in pm collapse onto venv_python.
hermes_constants.venv_python_path / venv_bin_dir and hermes_cli.runtime_paths
stay as frozen-updater-surface shims only (tests/compat/old_updater_surface.json).
To keep the boot path light, pm/__init__ resolves its facade lazily (PEP 562)
and pm.registry loads the built-in package definitions on first read instead of
at import: `import hermes_bootstrap` now loads pm + pm.environments only (25ms,
was 37ms with the eager facade dragging in the downloader). The stripped-payload
fixtures that ship only pre-import files keep working for the same reason.
Also restores two frozen-surface re-exports the F401 sweep dropped
(banner._github_compare_behind, cua_backend.resolve_cua_driver_cmd).
Run historical updater completion in a fresh interpreter so cached imports
cannot revive retired dependency installers. Share Git and ZIP completion,
carry receipt and recovery state, and preserve child exit status.
Route plugin admission, binary acquisition, desktop launch and build paths
through PM. Replace redundant helpers and tests with real worker, package,
publication and launch checks. Keep the shipped compatibility surface fixed.
Targeted Python and desktop checks pass. Native update journeys and fresh
production image qualification remain pending. This is a checkpoint before
those acceptance runs.
Enable verbose uv output whenever PM streams a command so long native dependency builds expose package activity and backend stdout/stderr before failure.
Verify both sync and requirements installs with real offline uv builds that wait for their output to reach the parent. Both cases fail on the base and pass with this change.
Ready tools do not authorize dependency operations when lazy installs are
disabled. Apply the shared guard before build, export, or online lock checks.
Keep offline lock checks passive. Cache pruning only reads the pinned
toolchain and cannot acquire missing tools.
Use one requirements-file installer for requirement builds and runtime
wheelhouse staging. Both enforce the same index and binary-only policy.
Verified 36 targeted tests, including missing-toolchain pruning, disabled
lazy operations with ready tools, and real offline runtime staging.
Build callers need lock validation without mutation and frozen exports that
retain markers and Git pins. Route these operations through the private
engine instead of giving callers uv commands.
Requirement builds claim fresh destinations, validate installed packages,
and remove failed candidates. Wheelhouse builds reject indexes and source
builds. Cache pruning keeps downloaded wheels except in CI mode.
Verified with real local wheels, a local Git source, and loopback downloads:
30 targeted tests passed across test_build_operations.py and
test_environment_build.py. No full-suite claim while the base migration is
in progress.
The minted launchers wired venv site-packages onto sys.path with a raw
insert (win32 wrapper) / PYTHONPATH (posix), neither of which runs .pth
files. pywin32.pth is load-bearing on Windows: it puts win32\lib on
sys.path, which is what makes 'import pywintypes' resolve — without it
portalocker's Win32Locker dies and concurrent-log-handler silently drops
every file-log record on Windows bundles.
* launcher_wrapper.py: site.addsitedir() for the site entry (repo first,
site directly after, .pth dirs last)
* launchers.py posix: same via HERMES_SITE env in the -c bootstrap
* pm/environment.py: prune_site_pth() drops _virtualenv.pth and the
__editable__ pointer (build-machine path) that must never run in a
sealed payload
* python_env.py: run the prune after every environment build
Merge ethie/shared-product-builders with the CI dependency cache and native Windows setup work. Preserve UTF-8 diagnostics in the shared Python environment runner. Pass a persistent cache through isolated native staging and PM-runtime construction. Reuse one Windows prerequisite installer from source setup, native adapters, and CI, preserving Rust homes across HOME isolation.
Verified 85 targeted Python tests (5 host skips), 18 JavaScript tests, workflow validation, and scoped lint/typecheck. On native Windows ARM64, five prerequisite contracts passed and the actual shared provider reused OpenSSL, compiled its header with MSVC, and retained Rust under isolated HOME. Full signed distribution builds and live Actions cache transfer remain CI verification.
Build TUI, web, desktop UI and runnable agent products from explicit
prepared inputs. Keep dependency preparation separate from distribution
packaging, with PM and native builds sharing uv environment construction.
Docker copies compiled frontend products instead of build dependencies.
Nix retains uv2nix environments and consumes shared assembly through store
references. Native desktop and Termux use the same launcher and frontend
contracts. Preserve the independent PM runtime and source imports from
arbitrary working directories.
Keep failed frontend builds from replacing the previous product, reject
source/output overlap, and bound dependency-process output draining.
Include hermes_wisdom in the Nix wheel: real CLI smoke tests exposed its
missing package declaration on the base revision too.
Verified focused Python and JavaScript suites, Docker build/runtime checks,
Nix desktop and CLI/ACP checks, standalone TUI and packaged Electron PTY,
and real full-Chromium interaction. Native signed installers, Android device
installation and the full repository suite remain CI verification.
