Phase 2 review follow-ups:
- OpenViking overlaid the bound profile's whole .env after the scrub,
so that profile's bot, dashboard and relay tokens reached the server
again. The overlaid env is now scrubbed a second time for Tier 1.
Provider keys still pass, and they still come from the bound profile.
- The strict per-home manifest read raised on any unreadable entry
under <home>/plugins, which failed every child spawn for that
profile. It is now strict only where the manifest is known to be a
platform's: bundled or plugins/platforms/. Dunder and dot
directories, unsearchable plugin directories and unreadable flat
plugins/* manifests are skipped with a warning, because they can't
load as plugins either.
- The per-home cache is keyed on hermes_home_key(), so a symlinked
alias no longer gets a second entry.
- The modal snapshot test swapped hermes_cli.config for a stub, which
the policy import can no longer use. HERMES_HOME already points the
real module at the test home, so the stub is gone.
- The env_passthrough docstring now describes declared names rather
than the dropped prefix rule.
Review follow-ups on the declared-secret policy:
- A profile's user-installed platform plugins declared secrets into
one process-wide set, read from the launch home at import. Under
multiplex that stripped profile B's same-named user variable and
missed profile A's own declarations. Bundled manifests stay
process-wide; user manifests are now read per bound home, cached
until that home's plugin dirs change, and are Tier 1 for that
profile only.
- The declaration scans no longer fail open. A registry error is no
longer swallowed into an empty set, non-string required_env entries
are skipped rather than breaking the set, and a manifest that
cannot be read raises instead of vanishing from the policy. A
malformed manifest still declares nothing.
- A plugin manifest can no longer reclassify a core-declared name
such as OPENAI_API_KEY; the same rule the config form applies.
- The dashboard basic-auth password and signing secret, the OIDC
client secret and the drain bearer move to Tier 1. Credentialed
CLIs (claude, codex) no longer receive them.
- openviking-server starts from served_profile_child_env, so it gets
the bound profile's provider keys, never the launch profile's.
With no bound profile under multiplex the start is refused.
- NOUS_API_KEY and QWEN_API_KEY are listed statically. Discovering
provider plugins while the policy module imported re-mirrored them
over a plugin's own auth registry entry
(tests/providers/test_auth_registry_import_order.py).
The scrubbed builder rewrites HOME to the profile home in containers and
profile home mode (the official image does this by default). These are
third-party programs whose own config and logins live under the user's
HOME: ~/.openviking, the raft CLI profile, ~/.config/buzz. The openviking
change copied the parent's HOME back, which is itself a profile home
when Hermes runs under one; use HERMES_REAL_HOME, which the builder
already computes, for all three.
The autostarted server copied the whole gateway environment, so bot, gateway and relay tokens reached it along with the provider keys its embedding/VLM models use. Build it with hermes_subprocess_env(inherit_credentials=True), the compute host's allowance, keep the user's HOME for ov.conf and keep stripping PYTHONPATH (#78153). Drop its exemption from the raw spawn-env guard and tighten the remaining entries' reasons.
Runtime identity resolved through hermes_cli.__version__ (a static 0.0.0
on source installs, rewritten by release stamping) leaked v0.0.0 into
About, /api/health, User-Agents, and plugin compat, and source updates
showed "couldn't reach update server" because identity and channel
authority disagreed with the checkout.
Now: get_version_info() resolves install stamp -> live git -> unknown,
never pyproject metadata, never a package constant. Source checkouts
derive identity from their reachable release tag; the completion tail of
every successful install/update/historical takeover atomically rewrites
install-stamp.json with that identity; a stale source stamp whose commit
no longer matches HEAD defers to live git. ACP/TUI use derived_version
for display and base_version for protocol fields; all ~44 runtime
__version__ consumers migrated; hermes_cli.__version__ and generated
_version.py are gone; release stamping only touches the native manifests
external builders consume (nix/tauri/cargo) and passes release identity
straight into write_install_stamp.py; pyproject.toml stays inert 0.0.0.
Desktop no longer synthesizes a competing install-stamp.json: the
checkout owns its stamp, and desktop-bootstrap classification keys on
the bootstrap-complete marker. verify-bootstrap-version-stamp.py now
cross-checks the checkout's stamp (baseVersion + commit == HEAD).
Validation: 31-file focused suite green (version identity, stamping,
adoption, providers, gateway, acp/tui runtime identity, api server via
extras env, release graph); desktop tsc + 25 vitest green; real-repo
probe: base=unknown derived=git.0635606.dirty source=git on this
checkout; clean-env imports resolve entirely from this tree; windows
footgun + compat-pointer scans clean.
Reconcile plugin declarations and validation through PM's atomic generation publication; preserve external runtimes, target markers, and conflict refusal. Keep one source-update completion owner and port upstream lifecycle changes to the PM desktop/runtime paths.
A long-lived serve process keeps a deleted profile as the context home of threads
that outlive the delete. A bare `mkdir(parents=True)` right before an atomic write
brings `profiles/<name>/` back after `hermes profile delete` has written the
tombstone and removed the tree.
The writers in `utils` and the seven callers named in #112592 are guarded by the
preceding commits; this one applies the same `mkdir_under_hermes_home` idiom to the
other pre-write directory creations found by the same mechanical rule (auth,
personality, plugin catalog, skills sync, tool discovery cache, platform adapters,
memory plugins, local runtime supervisor, process identity, breadcrumbs). The two
sites that pass `mode=` keep their mkdir behind `assert_named_profile_home_live`.
The guard is a no-op unless the target has a provable `profiles/<name>` ancestor.
Salvaged from #112596 (30-file sweep) on top of #112594 / #112601; the overlapping
files were resolved to the already-landed versions.
Port from earendil-works/pi#8337 (UTF-8 BOM normalization in text inputs):
sibling sites the merged #81967 BOM sweep missed. json.loads hard-fails on
a leading U+FEFF and every one of these loaders swallows the exception and
silently falls back to defaults — a user who edited mem0.json, honcho.json,
hindsight/config.json, or supermemory.json in Notepad lost their whole
config with no error, and Qwen CLI OAuth creds saved with a BOM raised
qwen_auth_read_failed.
- plugins/memory/{honcho,mem0,hindsight,supermemory}: 13 read sites -> utf-8-sig
- hermes_cli/auth.py: _read_qwen_cli_tokens -> utf-8-sig
- tests: BOM regression tests per loader (sabotage-proven) + plain-UTF-8 guard
Six of eight memory providers spawned plain threading.Thread for prefetch/sync/
writer work. A plain thread starts with an EMPTY contextvars.Context, so under
multiplex profiles the worker resolved the DEFAULT profile's HERMES_HOME (and
fails closed on scoped secrets). honcho and hindsight had each noticed and
written their own copy_context() wrapper; core had a third in memory_manager.
One canonical pair now lives on the ABC module every provider already imports:
agent/memory_provider.py::ctx_bound / spawn_context_thread. memory_manager,
honcho, hindsight, mem0, retaindb, byterover, supermemory and openviking all use
it; the honcho and hindsight wrappers and memory_manager._ctx_bound are deleted.
Five "json.loads(path.read_text()) or {}" readers (mem0._read_mem0_json,
honcho client/oauth/cli _read_config, hindsight save_config/_load_config) fold
into utils.read_json_or_empty, the read half of every read-merge-atomic_json_write
sidecar store.
holographic.save_config was the only config.yaml writer in the tree that
bypassed hermes_cli.config.save_config: raw open("w") + yaml.dump with no config
lock, no managed-mode refusal, no atomic replace, and a swallowed exception. It
now calls save_config(..., merge_existing=True). Behavior change: a managed
install refuses the write (previously silently rewrote config.yaml); other
sections are deep-merged instead of round-tripped through a raw dump.
openviking._hermes_home_path guarded an impossible ImportError of
hermes_constants (the module already imports agent.*) with a ~/.hermes fallback
that is wrong on Windows and under profile overrides; it is replaced by
get_hermes_home() directly.
Tests: tests/plugins/memory/test_provider_threads_inherit_profile.py drives each
provider's real spawn path with a fake backend and asserts the thread sees the
spawner's HERMES_HOME override (sabotage: retaindb back on threading.Thread ->
red). tests/plugins/memory/test_holographic_save_config.py pins merge-with-
existing-sections and managed-mode refusal (sabotage: raw yaml.dump -> red).
Ramp Router efforts cache + warm/disk flags, xAI and OpenRouter image catalogs,
Hindsight append-capability verdict, memory-provider skill registry, OpenViking
atexit provider, Honcho loopback flow status, Langfuse client (os.environ-only
credentials) and disk-cleanup's protected cron paths held one profile's
credential- or home-derived value process-wide; YuanbaoAdapter._active_instance
was last-connected-wins across profiles.
Keyed by home key / credential fingerprint under an override, credentials read
through the secret scope, warm threads run under copy_context(); unscoped module
slots stay for the single-profile path and the existing monkeypatch tests.
Under gateway.multiplex_profiles, os.environ holds the DEFAULT profile's .env; a
secondary profile's values exist only in the per-turn secret scope. Every reader
below still read os.environ/os.getenv at call time, so a secondary profile's turn
silently used the default profile's value.
Credentials (F6): FIRECRAWL_API_KEY (read_file hosted OCR), OPENVIKING_API_KEY,
mem0-OSS OPENAI_API_KEY, MODAL_TOKEN_ID/SECRET and BROWSER_USE_API_KEY presence
gates, and the xAI video plugin's os.getenv("XAI_API_KEY") fallback AFTER the
scoped resolver had already missed — the exact fallback-after-miss shape
gateway/AGENTS.md forbids. Deleted, not re-scoped: the resolver is the scope.
Identity / tenant (F7): MEM0_USER_ID/AGENT_ID/HOST/MODE, SUPERMEMORY_CONTAINER_TAG,
RETAINDB_PROJECT, OPENVIKING_ACCOUNT/USER/AGENT (and the whole layered() env
read), HINDSIGHT_BANK_ID/MODE/retain shaping, HERMES_HONCHO_HOST. A raw read
put a secondary profile's memories into the default profile's account/bank/
project/tenant and recalled them back into the default's turns. Each now uses
get_secret with the provider's own per-profile default on a miss.
Endpoints (F8): OPENAI_BASE_URL (aux custom runtime + direct-alias expansion),
XAI_BASE_URL/HERMES_XAI_BASE_URL (aux OAuth), NOUS_INFERENCE_BASE_URL (#65941,
both the aux builder and hermes_cli.auth_nous._nous_inference_env_override),
GATEWAY_PROXY_URL (same UnscopedSecretError-only fallback shape as
GATEWAY_PROXY_KEY three lines below), FIRECRAWL_API_URL, BROWSERBASE_BASE_URL,
SUPERMEMORY/RETAINDB/HONCHO/HINDSIGHT URLs. The keys beside them were already
scoped, so a secondary's key was sent to the default profile's proxy or host.
Targets / display (F11): WEIXIN_HOME_CHANNEL (message posted into the default's
chat), HERMES_LANGUAGE, and agent/i18n's process-wide lru_cache of
display.language — now keyed by HERMES_HOME.
Outbound webhooks: hooks.outbound[].secret_env resolved from os.environ while
the gateway registers each profile's targets inside that profile's scope, so a
secondary's deliveries were signed with the default's secret or left unsigned.
Agent-cache eviction: _spawn_release_thread started a bare threading.Thread, so
commit_memory_session -> provider on_session_end ran with an EMPTY context. The
thread now runs copy_context() and, for the unscoped housekeeping sweep, enters
the owning profile's _profile_runtime_scope resolved from the session key
(agent:<profile>:...). The pressure batch does the same per key.
session_search (#82903): agent/inline_tool_executors.py::_session_search
forwarded every schema argument except `profile`, so a gateway agent could
never select a named profile's store. Forwarded; the ownership-scoping design
in #87779/#87847 is a separate design call and is not attempted here.
Live repro (/tmp/mux_audit/fix-tool-memory-reads/repro.py): 28 FAIL on
origin/main -> 0 FAIL with this change; 10 new invariant tests red on base.

For each issue anchor present in BASE 63279301bc non-test .py and absent on HEAD, the BASE comment/docstring block was re-attached at the HEAD location of the code it explained (matched by the distinctive code line / enclosing def). Sentences already covered by an existing HEAD comment were deduped; the issue number always survives. Insert-only: no code lines changed.
Introduce the pm store: a unified, hash-verified package store that
replaces lazy_deps and the old installer's ad-hoc tool downloads.
Store tools are provisioned on PATH (ffmpeg, node/npm via pinned uv),
with a resumable 8-way downloader, verify() returning failure reasons,
and adopt() made EPERM-safe. chromium ships in the payload for every
target. The 3600-line install.sh is replaced by a staged bootstrapper
(heavy deps are pm's job after this); setup-hermes.sh, Dockerfile and
nix pin tables are rewired onto the store. Old install-script tests,
lazy_deps/managed_uv/build_info, and the ps1/bash installer test
batteries are removed with the machinery they tested.
Rebuilt from ethie/pm onto upstream/main (ac6c8028e0) after the
utf-8-sig sweep. 16 hot files (main also churned them) hand-merged:
platform adapters, main.py, electron/main.ts, tui_gateway/server.py,
cua_backend, installer-tests workflow, install.sh (full rewrite),
setup-hermes.sh, plugins doc.
Remove the implicit hermes peer and the peer question from new connection setup. Preserve explicit peer settings and keep memory paths consistent with the captured client identity.
Add setup, configuration, request, recall, and session regression tests, plus upgrade guidance.
Read text files with the encoding utf-8-sig so a BOM at the start of a
file does not cause a Unicode decode error (Windows editors add BOMs).
Reconstructed from ethie/pm commits 48a32b135b + 013219e814 onto the
current upstream/main base: only the utf-8 -> utf-8-sig transforms were
carried (370 exact line pairs across 205 files); pm-rename hunks that
rode in the original commit were left to the pm-store commit, and
utf8sig hunks entangled with content changes ride their owning commit.
Rebuilt on ethie/pm-clean off ac6c8028e0 (upstream/main).
Anonymous probes (_anonymous_json) are designed to probe server identity
before disclosing credentials. Sending the Hermes version on these probes
would fingerprint the exact version to an untrusted/MITM endpoint.
Keep User-Agent on authenticated requests (_headers) and multipart uploads
(_multipart_headers), which already send credentials.
- Key _user_space_cache on _conn_snapshot instead of client object identity,
so _new_client() results from the same connection share the cached user
(previously every on_memory_write triggered an uncached /api/v1/system/status
probe with a 30s default timeout)
- Thread a short timeout (0.05s) through the write-path identity probe
- Harden _tool_remember to snapshot the client before URI construction + POST,
matching the pattern already established in on_memory_write
- Remove dead instance method _user_scoped_uri (zero callers; all call sites
use the module-level function directly)
